5Fantastic Heavy-Weight Banner & Poster Paper
By Mollie
Love this doubleweight-matte paper by Epson. I use it with my Epson 9900 and have never had a problem with it. The color quality is great, both for delicate lines and full-bleed matte photos. Ink dries instantly on this media and never smudges. The Epson paper stays flatter post-print then other generic papers I've used of the same paper-weight. 44" is a size specific to Epson, so if you are looking for 44" heavy stock, this is the paper to choose.

4From an Everyday User: Big Improvements Needed
By Alfredo Gomez
Bottom line: Huge improvements needed but gets a 4 because it's the most comprehensive of what's available for PDAs.

I am a financial consultant and am on the road everyday to new residences and businesses, giving me in-depth knowledge about this particular product. Because many good reviews are listed, I will focus more the drawbacks. Read on for the nitty-gritty details.

The Maps:The maps can be huge, ranging from a couple megabytes to 15 megabytes. You'll need plenty of memory and a fast PDA. What a map covers depends on how dense the city is. Los Angeles requires about 4 maps while Riverside county is covered in two maps. You can only load 3 maps at a time, so if you're travelling long distances, your destination may have to be somewhere along the highway. Once you get there, load a different set of maps. Loading more maps, though, will reset your start/end points as well as your route. So you'll need to renter the information. Also, the more maps are open, the slower it is to pan across the map.

Finding yourself:Unlike a static map, the GPS can track your location or you can search by contacts, address, intersection, or major points of interest. Unfortunately, it only lists major venues (e.g. stadiums, major shopping centers) and not places like gas stations (a major drawback). Searching for an intersection without knowing the city can be quite tedious. You first enter a street name, then the city, then the next street name. So if the city is unknown and the first street appears in several cities, you have to try each city until you find the second street.

The GPS:If you use the system in your car, as I do, the GPS is a mixed blessing. When first starting the system, it may take a LONG time before getting a fix - if you're stopped. If you try to get a fix while moving, that drastically reduces your chances of getting a fix at all. After that, however, it is quick at requisition after going under tunnels and such. Because being in a car weakens the signal, it has a hard time following you after making turns. You may have made a left, but it still shows you as going straight. This is especially frustrating when you cannot stop and wait for it to tell you which way to turn, as in a highway exit with a green light. If you know this will happen, you best look at the directions and memorize the turns. Also, because of the weakened signal, the voice might keep saying, "you are off-route," either because it hasn't yet taken into account that you made a turn or simply because it can't quite pin-point where you are and has you located as driving off-road through blocks of houses. Expect this to happen frequently in mountainous areas or in downtown areas with tall buildings.

Routing:Routing is a mixed blessing as well. You can route by fastest, shortest, or no highway, and you have a voice telling you where to go. It is fairly quick at routing when you only have one map open. If you're travelling across three maps, it might take a while. Also, it is supposed to reroute you when you have gone off-course, but it rarely ever does that, meaning you have to take your eyes off the road and manually tell it to find a new route. Perhaps the biggest drawback is the amount of time it gives itself before telling you that a turn is coming up. On streets, it makes announcements 0.1 miles before street turns and 0.5 miles before highway exits, meaning you better keep an eye on how far away you are from your next turn. Also, the maps do not use highway-exit names. For example, the Santa Monica exit off the 405 North in California puts you on a street called Cotner Ave, which in actuality is just an off-ramp with a street name. The directions will tell you to exit onto Cotner Ave, meaning you will miss it because you will never see a Cotner Ave. exit on the highway signs. And if the off-ramp does not have a name or does not immediately exit onto a street, it will simply say to exit onto the off-ramp. Along those lines, you better remember your destination address because it doesn't show it to you in the text directions. I always have to switch back to my Outlook Contacts to look at the address because the map will get you to the block, not the specific address (probably to save memory). By the way, the voice simply tells you a turn is coming up - it doesn't actually say the name. But that is forgivable in order to save memory. The map always displays in large font what is coming up and the distance left to make the next turn as well as the distance remaining to your destination.

Battery Life and Memory:This product drains your batteries and the maps take up a lot of memory, so it would be prudent to get a car adapter and at least a 256MB flash memory module. Do NOT get compactflash because that slot will be taken by the GPS unit.

Bottom Line:Obvously, there is MUCH room for improvement. I tried many competing products and this one was, by far, the most comprehensive. There are products that list restaurants and gas stations, but use TINY maps of which you can only load one at a time and have limited search, routing, and GPS features. Others have better GPS sensitivity but are much more expensive. Others can show a cross-country route from start to finish on a single map but again, lack in other features.

4Great gadget but not a replacement for your atlas
By V. Keith Meinhold
I use the Pharos module for the Siemens (ATT) PocketPC phone. For the most part this device is limited because it uses a handheld to display the information. (limited by resolution and screen size, beyond the scope of this review) It will never approach a printed map for clarity, readability or comprehensive data. I have used this device quite a bit.

That said this device does things that a printed map could never do. It will show you exactly where you are, and give you directions to where you want to go - quite accurately. I think the software for the PDA is quite straight forward and intuitive, but the PC side is clunky - and needs further refinement.

The maps are regional only - for example if you are driving in the San Francisco Bay area - you will need to load three separate maps on to your PDA. (I have a 256MB SD/MMC card that has allows me to load the entire state of CA on the PDA).

Don't expect to have the entire US at your fingertips - unless you plan on bringing a laptop with you to synch and load new maps as you travel. I recently drove from San Francisco to Ft Lauderdale - I didn't use the device. It would be good though if you were going to fly somewhere and loaded maps of that area before you left.

My chief complaint is that it will not load neighboring regional maps as you move into new territory - even if they exist on your memory card.

Bottom line: (1) Not a replacement for you atlas or map(s), but a useful aid/enhancement to both. (2) Not a device for non-technophiles. (3) Well-designed software (at least the PDA side). (4) Very accurate.

5Very Snazzy GPS
By G. Ware Cornell Jr.
This is a nice addition to my Pocket PC, an IPAQ 3835. It seems a little slow on satellite acquisition especially if you are used to automobile GPS devices, but it is very accurate. It works best in the open.

If you get this, you will need some accessories.

The Compaq iPAQ Compact Flash Card Expansion Pack Plus is a must, for two reasons. Mostly you need the slot, but secondly it has an external battery. This thing eats up battery power.

There is something else you might consider for your IPAQ, a 128MB multimedia card. These can store a large amount of map data, and you can replace the smaller 32MB card you are probably using.

You could use the dual slot expansion pack with a CF card for map storage. However, as noted, the disadvantage of the dual slot expansion pack is the lack of the external battery.

4Excellent Beginer's surround sound receiver
By David Jamieson
I found the 845 reciver to be a very well thought out piece of equipment. It has 100watts X 5 channels, Dolby Digital and DTS processers, and a wealth of connections. All the RCA jacks one could ever need, 4 S-Video inputs, 4 Fiber optic, and a dual sub output for those who like their bass thick and chunky! And to top it off.... this year it includes Sony's Remote Commander, which will control just about everything you own. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for Digital surround sound, versitility, and reliabilaty.... that won't break the bank!

4good but with problem
By X. Wang
I bought this receiver in 2001. It was hooked to an Infinity home theater speaker system, which has five small speaker and subwoofer. I only use <1/3 of the max volume at all the time. Just like many people commented here, it worked great... until last year.First the center speaker quit and I heard clicking noise from the receiver. Such noise can only come from a relay. So I just switch it to 2-CH mode, since I did not have time to fix it. Then in last week, the receiver finally gave up. It stoped working either right after power-on or after working a several minutes. So I have to take it apart to do something. Here is what I found out. By the way, I am quite an experienced electrical engineer. The Op-amps in the pre-amp stage were overheated. There are three of these NEC op-amp chips on the main board. They are black big chips mounted vertically. I touched the chips after power-on for 2-3 minutes. They are hot, feels about 55-60 degree C. This is with the cover open, no input signal, no speaker hook-up. Then I noticed some of the leads of the op-amps were de-soldered and the board was black around the chips(open the bottom cover, looking from the back side of the main circuit board). It takes ~160 degree C to soften solder. So the silicon in these chip must be above 180 degree C at that time! Here is what I think happened. The designer did not give the op-amp chips enough heat sinking. So the chips over-heat. Not hot enough to fail immediately... robust NEC chip design! The solder points got soft when temperature got to ~160 degree C and hardened again when cooled down. After several years of execise, the solder joints became unstable, sometime touch sometimes not. This caused the protection functions to kick in. Then relays started to click on and off, folowed by shut off. Here is how I fixed it. These op-amp chips have metal slug on back and screw holes for heat sink mounting. SONY did not put in any heat sinks for them. (Come on, it costs <$0.3!) So I resoldered the IC leads. Then I cut three pices of 30mm X 50mm X 0.8mm from a copper sheet, drilled screw holes. Then mounted the copper pieces to the back of the op-amp ICs. Some silicon greese or thermal pad between copper and IC will be very helpful. I used some phase-change material, if you know what it is.After done that, I hooked up speakers and DVD players and turned it on for about one hour. It was fine. These op-amps are still hot, but should be cooler than before. Someday they may fail just because of running hot for too long. If they fail, I may buy replacement from ebay for $7 each.Hope you find it helpful. Good luck!

5No regrets whatsoever
By DJ Robin
Guys...if you're looking for a high-powered receiver to drive your speakers, look no further. I have bought the 845 and am driving the Bose AM15 home theatre speaker system with this...it is just wicked! Initially I had some reservations on using Bose speakers with a Non-Bose receiver but after a lot of convincing from the salesperson and Sony I bought this. And I must say that I have absolutely no regrets. In fact, my salesperson also said that this combination would sound much better since the Bose receiver does not have any customization features whatsoever whereas the 845 provides one with an array of features and effects. Also the remote control can control any brand of A/V equipment which makes life much more easier and simpler...I'd recommend you guys to go for it!

5A pleasure to look at
By Professor
I had two 20" Sony Trinitrons on my computers. Finally decided to go flat panel. I did a lot of research and the numbers on this monitor were better than most --- it is brighter (250 lumins), wider viewing area (170 degrees), and a faster screen update speed (25ms). I saw it in the store and it just looked better than the others to me. Of course, it's hard to find a store that allows you to make a good comparison. Most stores don't even know enough to run LCD monitors at their correct resolution. My main concern was how it would perform with fast action games. At first, I noticed just a slight amount of blurring (compared to CRT monitors) when the entire screen was shifting fast, but I got used to it quickly. I don't feel that it is noticable anymore. Of course there's no blurring with movies. I'm using an analog video card (Voodoo 4) and it is working perfectly - no text ghosting or anything. When I first connected the monitor, I got no picture, then remembered that it must be refreshed between 60 and 75 Hz. I changed the video to refresh at 60 Hz and the screen was a little funny. Don't know how to describe it, but it reminded me of a CRT monitor in interlaced mode. When I changed the refresh to 75 Hz, it gave me a perfect picture. I highly recommend this monitor (and I'm very picky). No dead pixels. I like the larger 19" size - I run it at the 1280x1024 with the default normal size fonts on XP. No more screen flicker. No more electron guns beaming radiation at your eyes. Update Aug. 2004: This monitor has been on about 8 hours per day since I purchased it 2 years ago and it is still flawless. When purchasing a flatpanel monitor, be sure to look at the contrast ratio. A 500:1 contrast ratio means that white is 500 times brighter than black. A poor contrast ratio means the black pixels on the screen are partially illuminated.

5Big and beautiful right out of the box (almost)
By B. Lemons
I ordered it two days ago and, much to my surprise, it was delivered today (I used the super saver shipping, not bad: two days for free shipping). After the last 6 years with a 17" CRT, I thought I was ready to move on. I'm happy with the reclaimed desk space AND the bigger screen size.

Right out of the box, I plugged it in and started to work. However, everything was pretty blurry and low quality. After going through most of the setting of both my video adapter and the monitor itself, I realised the problem. I have an old PC set up next to my current PC and I have a cheap monitor/mouse/keyboard switch that I use so I don't have to have two of everything. This monitor did not like that switch. When I plugged it in directly to the PC, it worked like a charm.

It's clear, big, bright and beautiful. I've watched a DVD and it looked great (I don't normally do this from my computer, but I did to test out the new monitor). I don't game, so I can't say what action games will look like.

I like it and would recommend getting one if you're due for a replacement like I was.

4Sharp and Clear Text, Beautiful Digital Picture
By A Customer
The analog connection is ok but text is fuzzy. The digital connection is FAR superior. Please use the digital connection only if you buy this LCD. Even though it is .29mm dot pitch, it looks amazingly sharp in digital. The text on the screen is amazingly clear and readable. You will have no problems with viewing angles. This LCD is brighter than my old 21" monitor. In fact it is almost too bright for nighttime lights off usage.

DVD movies look superb. Computer games show very slight ghosting but not enough to affect your gameplay.

No sound built in, but that's why I have my existing subwoofer and speakers for.

The casing has a lazy susan at the bottom so you can spin it around, and you can tilt it to suit your height.

Buy it, you won't regret it.

5Great value - most bang for the buck - GREAT BUY!
By A Customer
If all you need is a great stereo receiver - and NO 5.1 or DOLBY surround - then this is the unit for you. Simple to install and operate. Very clean sound and plenty of power. One or two more inputs wounld't hurt, but overall you can't beat the deal on this receiver. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a basic stereo receiver that has plenty of clean power. Great buy.

NOTE: This review is in my own words based on my own experiences with this product - unlike Chi Tran, whose ENTIRE REVIEW TEXT of this item was copied "cut and paste" from the Crutchfield website. What a joke.....

5Great, long lasting Sony product
By Tim Swallow
I've owned this receiver since June 1999 - about 14 years. It has been nothing but perfect. Someone else mentioned more inputs, which would be nice, but it really is a solid piece. Sony is usually more expensive than the competition but for a reason. I've gone through about 3 sets of speakers on this system: Phillips bookends (junk, broke within 2 years), Sony SS-B300H (great speakers for the price, still work flawlessly) and now have a pair of M-Audio AV-40 Studio Monitors running through, which sound amazing. It runs both the M-Audio's and the Sony's through great without needing any extra power or preamp. I currently have this system running with a stereo cd-recorder, computer DAW, record player, and cassette player and have yet to run into any problems.I bought this new for $499. You can get a lot better for that nowadays, but with the used prices ($100-200) I would say this is absolutely worth it if you're in the market.

5Sony's best for stero and price
By Chi Tran
In the "good things you can count on" department, Sony once again offers a receiver lineup that satisfies the wide variety of home entertainment desires. And from the least expensive model up you get rock solid dependability, clear, dynamic sound, and the latest technology at super-affordable prices. For music fans (and for rooms where you don't need a home theater), the STR-DE135 stereo receiver delivers the audio "basics" and more. It treats your music right with 100 watts per channel for smooth, low-distortion sound. You get 4 audio inputs for your music sources (CD, MiniDisc, cassette, etc.) Select AM/FM stations using the 30 memory presets, or tune them in directly via the number buttons on the receiver's front panel. It also included remote keeps you in control. Overall, great price with great value.

5I Highly Recommend D-Link's DSS-16+ Switch.
By Jake Batres
I purchased the DSS-16+ to replace 3 hubs I was using for my small office network. After connecting the switch, I couldn't believe how fast my network operated. I gained dedicated bandwith per port and no longer had to share my bandwith with other users. The DSS-16+ has full-duplexing to provide maximum speeds for 10/100 network cards. D-Link provides lifetime warranty so I know I can't go wrong. I question the problems the other guy experienced because this switch alleviated all of my network traffic and gave me the fast performance I seeked. I would definitely recommend the DSS-16+ to my family and friends.

1Fast, but prone to fail
By Peter Harrington
I picked up a DSS 16+ switch and it definitely improved our network of 14 computers. We were using the two uplinks. I purchased the system in January and it has a 3 year warranty.

Yesterday, it died completely. We lost all our ports. You cannot get through D-Link tech support by phone, and e-mail has been slow to get an RMA.

In retrospect, I think the slightly more expensive Link-Sys switches may be manufactured with better quality control.

4Sony CMTEX1 - Almost Perfect
By torx
This is a very cool looking system. The speakers and trim are made of light-colored simulated wood. The front body is composed mainly of a thick glass which houses a vertical see-thru CD player. The CD pops out on top like in a toaster. The buttons have a very nice soft blue glow in them. The back is very clean, and even has a cover that hides all the cabling - nice to have if you want to place this on your desk. Anyway, it looks amazing.

As for how well it sounds, I'm not an expert in this, but it sounded great to my ears. The bass is a little weak, but this seems common on executive desktop systems I have tried. Its simulated surround and Dynamic Sound Generator makes up a little bit for this by making the sound more fuller. It also had enough power for my taste, much more than what I would ever need for my room. But one thing I would have liked is a bass/tremble control.

Home made CD-RW and CD-R CDs seems to work fine. The only problem I had was that I couldn't seek back to the previous track on one particular CD-RW written in DAO (disk-at-once) mode.

And since the specs aren't up yet on Amazon, it comes with these features: AM/FM tuner, AM/FM memory, CD player, CD text, CD shuffled/programmed modes, simulated surround, line-in, line-out, optical digital in, earphone jack, remote, clock, wakeup timer, and sleep timer. Check Sonys site for pictures and more info.

Tip: I used the line-in jack to plug in a Rio 600 MP3 player and it worked great!

5Works great!
By Hermasetas
I bought this product a while ago and now I can't live without it!It has a few downsides though: - It is for American keyboards only (I'm from Denmark) which makes it a little harder to work with. - It will only record keystrokes, so there is no possibility to using scripts or the mouse for that sake.Even though it doesn't do many magic things, one can really get some work done faster with this keypad and a little creativity ;)

5Great tool for developers!
By lemie
When coupled with good macro software, like AutoHotKey (free), I have been able to create macros for certain tasks that take several mouse gestures and key presses. It really is great when things that used to take 10-15 seconds of futzing around can be accomplished with a single key stroke. I've only had this for a week, but can already feel more productive. Another thing... if you think about a typical action that takes, say, ten mouseclicks or keystrokes... that's ten opportunities for you to get distracted and wander off and do something else. If you can automate that all down to one key, then you won't lose your train of thought.

5Lots of love from a long time user.
By C. Yi
I recently bought one of these, and it's actually my 2nd one, so I can leave one at home and one at work. Yes, I feel that this device is that crucial to my productivity.I use one of these at my current job as a researcher to process text, flip through different websites, and to automate repetitive data tasks. It's actually quite simple to get started with the basics, and while the learning curve definitely gets steeper for the more advanced functions, you will be richly rewarded for your efforts. The fact that I can copy all of the text from one website, switch over to MS Word, paste it in, trigger a text cleanup macro, recopy, flip to another browser window, paste it in, and throw around all the bits of data where they belong (Tab and Copy-Paste), ALL AT THE PRESS OF A BUTTON, is absolutely phenomenal. I used this at a previous job as a teacher to help with grading multiple choice tests LIGHTNING fast (A, B, C, D, E, and Skip - brilliant). To begin basic programming, simply open the loading program, click on the button you want to program for, and begin entering in keystroke sequence you want that button to activate. Most keys on the keyboard will work just fine, and for special keys you can click on the virtual keyboard that appears on the screen. To do another button, simply click on another button in the diagram, and repeat the process. Once you are done, hit the download button, wait (this usually takes about 5 seconds), and your keypad is flash-programmed. You can also save this custom definition file, which you can reload later, or transfer to another machine. That said, the best part about this keyboard is that once the keypad is programmed, you can unplug it and move it from machine to machine, WITHOUT any special software needed. Every definition file allows for 2 "layers" of keys, which you can access by setting one of the keys as a layer toggle, or optionally as a "shift" type key (i.e. hold it down while pressing another to activate 2nd function). That said, with the custom definition files, you can have a near infinite number of scripts. The photos don't show it too well, but each key also has a thin, clear plastic cap that pops right off with a screwdriver. This allows you to create your own little paper labels, once you have a stabilized set of scripts. Personally, I don't bother, because I rewrite and reflash it so often, but it's nice to have that aesthetic option. This product is basically flawless. I love it to death and I can't imagine working without it.Note: The version I got differed slightly from the model pictured - it's a darker grey, and the cord comes out of the middle of the top edge, not the side as pictured. Also, mine was branded with Genovation, the manufacturer. Frankly, I preferred all of these changes. I don't know what version is pictured, but the one I received is the 5.21. My other one is a 5.0. Sick, I know. Also, I wanted to point out that this particular company did a spectacular job of shipping it to me in a timely fashion. YMMV, but I received mine within 24 hours of hitting "submit".In summary, I cannot recommend this product or this company enough.

4Wingman Wheel is fun!
By Brian Wiggins
The product arrived in 2 days in good order. It is a good quality wheel with a good feel. The pedals are large enough and well spaced. The wheel comes with an installation CD and a bundled game. The biggest problem I had was during installation. At one point it asks for you to insert the Windows '98 CD into the drive. My Dell computer did not include this CD so I was stuck without a necessary driver. After some time searching the internet, I was able to get the driver and complete the installation. Once over this hurdle, everything went well. The wheel is easy to set up and it works with all the games I have tried. The 6 buttons are easy to program for shifting gears, lights, horn or whatever you wish. By the end of the day the whole family was engrossed in Need For Speed - High Stakes. The force feedback experienced with most games is amazing! You will feel bumps and turns and other cars hitting you. One thing to note is that if you have a heavy foot, the pedals may slide away from you, even on carpet. I have not used other force feedback wheels but I could definitely recommend this one an excellent option!

4A very good wheel for only a little money
By Michael F. Maddox
The Formula Force GP wheel is a very comfortable, responsive USB steering wheel. I've been running it with Windows 2000, and have had not a bit of trouble with it, in fact, it has added a significant amount of fun and realism to my driving games. This, added to the low price (compared to other wheels) I paid ($49, after rebates) has made the wheel one of the best additions I have made to my computer.

Likes: 1. The rubberized red pads and cut-outs make the wheel much, much nicer than the all-plastic wheels out there 2. The wheel mounts easily and positively to your desk, and doesn't take up too much room 3. Force feedback effects are good 4. Wingman configuration program provides good configurability and control of the wheel 5. Great plug and play USB installation

Gripes: 1. The wheel is too small 2. The pedal base is too light, and should be further secured to prevent sliding 3. Odd noises from the wheel in use (when not drowned out by the game audio)

Overall, a great value and a very good wheel. This should tide me over until I can pony up the money for a better, metal wheel and pedal set (if EVER).

4A lot of bang for the buck
By Sheldon
Okay, I'm in my mid 50s and copy of Need For Speed jumped off the shelf into my cart the last time I went shopping. I installed the game and played it for awhile, first using the keyboard (can't be done), and then using a flight yoke I have. That was okay, but braking and accelerating was difficult, and I was all over the place as the yoke just didn't cut it.

Anyway, I was now addicted to this stupid game, so I searched Amazon.com for a "real" steering wheel. After checking the customer reviews I settled on this one. I don't plan on using it all the time, so I didn't want to spend a fortune, and for a few extra bucks the force-feedback feature seemed like it would be fun. It is.

The unit installed easily in Win 98, but I have to agree with another reviewer that the wiring on this thing is nuts. The pedals are already on the floor, so why not attach all the cables to that, then run one cable to the wheel? Also, the USB cable from the wheel to the computer isn't very long. I'll probably pick up an extension, and you may need one, too.

I had no problems with the pedals moving around, as some others said, but I have this really cheap carpeting in my office that I think helped. Also, the wheel clamps securely to just about any desk, but if you have a slide out keyboard drawer, like I do, you may have problems. Many games require use of the keyboard, and I can't pull mine out when the wheel is attached. I had to move the keyboard out of the drawer to get to it.

As for play: The wheel makes driving games a lot more fun. It has a good feel to it, the feedback isn't bad, but like another reviewer admitted I'm also spoiled. I have a Porsche 911, and this wheel and a game can't come close. I can tell when I'm off the road, and I can tell when I've hit something, and there's even some road feel (when I drive over cobblestones the whole desk shakes), but it's not even close to the real thing. Not that I would know what it feels like to hit a lot of trees, fences, and other cars. We're simply talking road feel here.

Still, it's a lot of bang for the buck, and they even give you a free game with it. You'd think they'd give you something that would really show off the wheel, but they don't. However, for [the price]the combination of the wheel and the game is a damn good deal. Even better when you discover that older versions of Need For Speed, and similar programs, are really cheap.

I should admit that I have not compared this wheel to any others. The four star rating is based on the four star grin on my face, and the fact that I felt it was a bargain. At least if it winds up on a shelf after awhile I won't glance over at it thinking about all the money I wasted.

Oh, yeah. I ordered this from Amazon with the free shipping option and it arrived in only two days! That kind of service is hard to beat.
