5Best system for the money!
By Morley Dotes
I have had this system for over 8 months now, and have compared it with similar systems, including BOSE, and I prefer this one. You really get a lot for the money. The system holds 5 DVD's, which is great, radio is great with plenty of presets. It is VERY loud and clear. Also, it decodes DTS, which, IMHO is AWESOME!!!! For example, compare Saving Private Ryan in DTS and DD, and you will long for DTS. The remote is a bit complicated, but once you get the hang of it, you will probably enjoy it, I know I did. The only thing I didn't realize was that I had the sub woofer mode off for the first few months, and wondered why the base was not that great! HAhahaha, what a difference. I have this system in my living room, (my wife is awesome), and the room is over 4000 cubic feet, with the viewing area 16 feet away from the CC and mains and sub, and I have never turned the volume up past 15 (I think it goes up to 30, I can't even imagine how loud that is). If you have a WEGA, it is a perfect match and will run everything on the remote. Btw, if you are as lucky as I am, and you have your PS2 hooked up to it, you will love the surround on the games, just switch to Game sound mode. Set-up is a breeze. Keep in mind this is NOT a "serious" home theater set-up, but then, you are not spending lots of money either. My suggestion is, always to try listen to whatever you are going to buy, because everyone's ear is different. Also, if you are going to spend as bunch of money on a speaker system, don't! Sell your DVD player, or save up some more money and buy this system. If you have a DVD player and a receiver, this is probably not the system for you, and you can get better speakers for a decent price. The only bummer about this system is that you don't have too much control when you are trying to balance out each speaker, (again, keep in mind that my living room is more than 30 feet long, so that is kind of important for me). Still, I love this system. Keep in mind what it is, and I think you will love it too!

3Warning before you buy
By snooze13
No complaints on the performance of the Sony SAVAD900 Home Theater System by Sony, which I believe is their top of the line DVD/CD surround system, EXCEPT that this model does NOT play CDRs! I made the mistake of checking the lower priced model which apparently does play cdrs, but was talked into getting this one by my girlfriend because of the relatively weak subwoofer on the lower models. I cannot believe that for $1,000.00 this thing cannot play cdrs. I think it is because on this model, the dvds/cd player is housed in the speaker, as opposed to the lower models wherein there is a separate unit. SO IF YOU INTEND TO PLAYS CDRS IN YOUR HOME THEATER SYSTEM BUY A LOWER MODEL OR GET A BOSE OR A PIONEER UNIT.

3WRW Is Absolutely Correct
By A Customer
We've had this receiver for about 18 months. From the day we got it, we were very impressed with the 5.1 sound when playing DVDs using the TOShttp://amzn.com/dp/B00005I9RA/?tag={ucomicscom} cable and the little blue light would come on. I was sure many times that the doorbell rang, or a ohone was ringing (it was the cool sound coming from the surround speakers), the subwoofer added a whole new dimension, and we just had a blast watching DVDs. Even music DVDs were amazing for a receiver that we only paid a couple hundred dolalrs for.

However, I just really lost the joy of listening to CDs. I though it was the room, my ears, the CDs, the speakers, or who knows what. I tried every programmed sound mode, whatever they call that, but nothing ever sounded as good as my old receiver. Just never thought this receiver was really at fault, since it was new, state of the art for that low price range.

After reading WRW's comments, I realize perhaps it is just the design, or maybe my personal preferences. I even asked at a pro sound shop thinking maybe it was our room layout or something, but they talked about better amplifying equipment, and mostly about speakers and their unique characteristics, not about how seriously detrimental a receiver could be to our sound quality.

I finally realize, it's the receiver, stupid!

I have read recently about the importance of listening to various receivers ebfore buying. I always thought they were about the same, and it was the speakers that made the difference. I guess I might have been wrong.

Going out tomorrow to replace this lightweight hunk of junk that really ruined the last couple years of listening to CDs. In fact, we just never did after we bought this thing.

I've always loved Sony products, but this particular item is a bit of a dog. We are looking at the DE995, but will be a lot more careful this time around.

2Sony Disappoints
By techwreck
Our past experience with Sony products has been great, but this receiver is a disappointment. We have integrated the receiver with a DVD/CD player, a Dish Satellite TV receiver, a VCR, and a tape deck. Installation instructions are good, but operational instructions are a problem.

1) The manual is written for an audio engineer, not a consumer. The many control settings are barely explained.

2) CD sound is biased toward high treble, and Sony recommends an external equalizer as the only answer.

3) Technical support is by email only with slow responses and incomplete answers.

We will not buy another Sony audio product.

5Excellant Receiver
By Troy Coons
This is the best receiver I've ever owned. Very clean sound and plenty of power. I can't think of anything to complain about. I am extremely satisfied and plan on buying another one for a second TV room. I have had too many cheap products in the past and within the last year have determined to always buy Sony. You may pay a little more, but you end up getting what you pay for.

4Not knowing much, but...
By A Customer
I bought this receiver to replace my old Sony receiver that I've had for 12 years! Why? Because I finally got a DVD player. My old receiver didn't have a specific place to hook up the DVD (it was made before there WERE DVDs), but it was Dolby prologic. It was the prototype, but I didn't think it would handle the DVDs, so I went out and bought this new one. After much hand-wringing on which model to get, I settled for this one; it was easy to hook up and had everything I needed to get going. My 3-year old TV does NOT have S-connection (THAT was a mistake) and so this receiver is just fine for now (although it DOES have s-connection).

The price was right on, and the Clicker is awesome; it will run my VCR, TV, CD player and Receiver--to eliminate juggling all those clickers was worth the purchase price alone! I really would have gotten the 845 model instead, for a tad more money and the room to "grow" but I'm embarrased to say that it wouldn't fit on my jazzy glass entertainment center, but this 475 would. Done deal!

It's 80 watt vs. 100 watt, but hey, I'm not one of those people that need to make the room rumble and pierce eardrums, so this is plenty for me. I did hook up 5 speakers for surround sound, and what can I say? After plain old stereo TV this is killer! Must buy fun DVDs; Matrix, Verticle Limit, Dinosaur, Gladiator--anything that really rocks! You'll love it.

4A good entry-level receiver with the works!
By P. Caballes
This is a good entry-level a/v receiver, that has the basic works one would need: DTS, 5.1, digital inputs, and a good selection of preset sound effects. It is rated with 80watts of power, but again, this is more than enough for the average user. Paired with a good set of speakers, this set really gives good quality sound.I wanted to rate it 5 stars, but one thing I noticed it lacks is more digital inputs. It has 1 optical and 1 coaxial digital input - it would've been better is Sony put it at least 3 inputs (1 coax, 2 optical). Other than that, this set is right on the money and worth every penny :-)

5Great receiver for those with a budget
By A Customer
For what it is, this is a wonderful receiver. Yes, it's only 80W per speaker, etc, etc. But unless you have REALLY good sound insulation or are trying to anger your neighbors, it has plenty of power. Sounds are crisp and clear in 5.1 my lower end Bose speakers. It certainly made a difference when I hooked up the DVD to the digital input (coaxial is DVD on this receiver) and played The Matrix for the first time. It certainly didn't need to be anywhere near the top volume for that to impress me. Definately one to look at if appreciate good sound, but don't want to pay the multiple $K for the top of the line. There are plenty of good speakers that this will power just fine.

5This is the VCR for you if you hate to read manuals
By Philipp Kessler
I'm not an electronics fan, but when my old Magnavox VCR continued to mess up the tapes, I decided to replace it with a more reliable brand. A DVD just doesn't yet replace a VCR in all its functions.I bought this Sony for it's reputation and I can honestly say: It is well deserved! The picture quality is great but what is really fantastic, is the fact that it is so easy to operate. If you are like me and you hate reading complicated manuals just to set the VCR you will love this one. The controls are simple and anyone can understand them within minutes. Pre-setting the VCR to start recording has never been easier. One of the niftiest features is that the VCR will set it's own clock by the signal it receives through the cable. Living in an area that endures frequent power outages this is one important feature. At this price level one can't beat the value.

4All the goodies
By pen7cmc
My 7 year old Hitachi finally died, so I read a few web pages and decided on this Sony. There are several features I really like about it: the remote works with my ancient non-Sony TV, the programming is easy (I don't use VCR-Plus+, I do it manually), and there's a little knob on the front of the VCR that allows me to program it without turning the TV on. As you push and turn the knob, the clock display turns into a programming display. It's a quick and easy way to do some last-minute programming as you head out the door. Or can't find the remote... I don't like the fact that you can't see the time of day when the VCR is turned on/playing/recording. Incredibly annyoing, since I use the VCR to turn channels and as such it's always on when I'm watching TV. The tuner is much stronger too, I'm picking up channels from where I used to live, a 2+ hours drive away--barely, but they're there. Another new feature to me was the display of the program's name as I turn the channel, and this is on broadcast TV, not cable. I'm not giving this a 5 star rating because of the clock issue, and because it doesn't have the 4-hour EP setting, and because you can not program it to record something more than a month away. Of course you can record M-F, one day a week, etc., but the first recording of that program can not start more than one month ahead of the current date. With my old VCR, I could enter any MM/DD/YYYY as the start date. The picture quality is much better than what I was used to, even though the Hitachi was repaired just 2 years ago, and the rewind/fast-forward are both faster as well. I'd buy it again, certainly, but only after I bought a small clock to put next to it so I could tell what time it is when I am watching a tape.

4Gets the job done
By Stephanie Hansen
When my 3 year-old Sharp VCR ate my brand new movie, I let the poor thing sit for two weeks trying to figure out which VCR to buy. I probably just should've replaced it with a DVD, but I have too many tapes to go without. Nevertheless, I broke down and went to the local electronics store and picked up this VCR. Figuring it was a Sony utilizing state-of-the-art technology, I found myself somewhat disappointed. It's fairly low tech. Then again, I suppose VCR's are these days. While the picture quality and sound is good, the unit features were lacking compared to my old VCR. It has only one fast forward speed, and its "commercial pass" feature requires the user to manually stop the tape. Those are really the only major complaints I can lodge against the product, but when there's not much to talk about, it makes a difference.

On the basis of picture and sound quality, this product deserves a favorable rating. Perhaps its biggest sin is not being the VCR that I was used to.

This work bench is smaller than I thought it would be. But, it is very durable and well-made. We got this for our 2 year old and he didn't really play with it much until he was closer to 3. It takes some dexterity to screw and use the vice.

5PICTURE LOOKING GREAT!!!!!
By JOSE
Don't judge this TV by its cheap look, judge it by its screen resolution and picture quality. I have owned Casio's models 970 and 880. They don't have as many pixels as the 550. The brightness and picture quality is superior when you put them side to side. The 550 has TFT active matrix screen while the others have passive matrix. The TFT is better under all light conditions, even under direct sun light. If you really want a TV that is good both outdoors and indoors don't buy a passive matrix tv. Get ready to have lots of fresh batteries or buy the AC adaptor from casio's website. I would not recomend getting those universal AC adaptors out there, even if you set them up to match the handheld specifications, it can eventually burn your screen and your TV won't turn on again. The warranty doesn't cover this kinda thing since you are not using casio's certified AC adaptor. Believe me, it happened to me once and I have heard a lot of sad stories of dead handeld TV's once they are hooked to generic adaptors. SO, play safe, take care of your investment and enjoy!!!!

5Even if you didn't like the movie...
By Jim Genzano
This is a very entertaining strategy game based on the end of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace. Regardless of how you felt about the movie (DISCLAIMER: I am a Star Wars fan, and actually liked the movie), if you enjoy a good strategy game, or even just a good board game in general, you will probably enjoy this game.

When you first look over the rather lengthy rule book (18 pages, I believe), you may feel a bit daunted. But the rules are actually very well written, and are accompanied by many pictures and examples to help you understand. For a two player game, one of you plays the bad guys (the Trade Federation) and the other plays the good guys (the Naboo). For a four player game, you play as two teams of two. Just like at the end of the movie, there are four battles going on simultaneously: 1) the Jedi Duel between Obi-Wan and Qui Gon, and Darth Maul, 2) the Space Battle, wherein Anakin is heading up to destroy the Droid Control Ship, 3) the Theed Palace Battle, wherein the Naboo are trying to take back their palace and the droids of the Trade Federation are trying to stop them, and finally 4) the Battlefield, where the Gungans, under the momentary protection of their shield, are facing off against the Trade Federation's droids.

The actual play mechanics are very simple. Everything proceeds through card play. The cards tell you which groups/characters in which battle you can move and attack with. Also, some special cards give your armies special abilities (for instance, certain cards will double the number of spaces that certain characters can be moved during that turn, while others, like the precious Use the Force card, allow you to play extra cards on your turn). In a two player game, each of you starts out with ten cards. You choose four of them to play during, and place them in the order you wish (this is where a lot of the strategy comes in). (In a four player game, you each get fewer cards--also, one person on your team handles two of the battles, and the other person handles the other two battles.) Then the round begins, and first one of you plays a card, then the next, and so on, back and forth, until you're all out of cards. Then you draw more cards and do it again.

Each of the battles is played differently, but they interconnect in interesting ways. The Battlefield battle is a pretty basic hex-based combat game. You move your armies according to set movement restrictions, and attack with dice rolls. Your enemy can sometimes defend with dice rolls. The interesting thing about this battle is the inclusion of the Gungan shield; until the shield goes down, the Trade Federation player cannot really move his heavy artillery in against the Gungans. But once the shield does go down, the Gungans are basically doomed. As in the movie, this battle is really only a distraction. But it's still important for both players to pay attention to it, because for every group you defeat on this board, you get a bonus card that you can play on your next turn. These can pile up and become very important.

The Jedi duel is also a simple dice-based combat game; winning this battle allows you to move your Jedi onto the Theed Palace board to affect the outcome of that battle.

The Theed Palace battle is another dice-based combat game, but it's played out on a three-dimensional board with three levels. The Naboo player has to get a majority of his characters on the top floor (the throne room), while the Trade Federation has to stop this from happening (he has to eliminate all but two Naboo characters to win this battle, and thus the whole game). Getting your Jedi into Theed Palace can totally change the outcome of this battle, as the Jedi can really wreak havoc here.

In the Anakin game, the Naboo player rolls dice in an attempt to move Anakin toward the control ship, while the Trade Federation player rolls dice and plays cards in an attempt to slow down Anakin (Anakin cannot be destroyed). If Anakin makes it to the ship, all of the droids are destroyed, which basically means that all of the Trade Federation players' armies are destroyed. However, the Naboo player doesn't win the game until he has a majority in the Theed Palace throne room.

And that's the basics of the game play. It's a very fun game that, while it will definitely seem complex at first, you can pick up very quickly after playing just one round. All of the information you need to play is either written on the cards themselves, or on the handy cardboard information sheets that go with each of the game's boards. Despite the elements of randomness (the order of the cards; dice throws), there's still a lot of strategy involved in deciding which cards to play, in what order, and which battles to focus on. And the four player game adds another level of complexity and interest, as it involves deciding, as a team, what you should do next.

The game does, however, have some drawbacks:

1) The number of players necessary. You can only play the game with two or four players.

2) The length of time it takes to play. It takes four hours, minimum, to finish a game. That's a lot of time to devote to a game, even a great game like this one.

3) The setup procedure. There are three boards that have to be positioned correctly in relation to each other. One of the boards (the Theed Palace board) has to be assembled every time you play. Then there are 150 plastic figures that have to be placed on the various boards in the correct places.

4) The Theed Palace board. The idea of a 3-D board with various floors is quite cool. However, the Theed Palace board is made of three cardboard sheets that have to be inserted into four plastic columns. Putting it together is a little tricky, and it doesn't always hold together very well. It's also hard to avoid jarring the board when moving pieces around on it, thus knocking over a bunch of pieces.

5) The game is biased toward the Trade Federation player. This is the final and most important flaw in the game. I've played the game a number of times, but I have only seen the Naboo player win once, and that was during the first game that I played, when neither player knew the rules and strategies very well. The problem is that in order for the Naboo player to win the game, regardless of what he does in any of the other battles, he must get Anakin to the Droid Control ship, and getting him there is almost impossible. To do it, the Naboo player has to get a lot of Anakin cards, and a lot of good dice rolls, and the Trade Federation player has to not get a lot of Starship cards (which help to slow down Anakin), and he has to get a lot of bad dice rolls. So basically, as the Naboo player, even if you have excellent strategical skills and use them to the utmost of your ability, winning is still ultimately dependent on how lucky you are.

To sum up, this is a very entertaining game; even with its flaws, it's probably one of the best games I've ever played, and I've played a LOT of games. But you won't get to play it very often, because in order to do so you have to find one OR three friends (not just two!) who are willing to give up four hours of their lives to play a strategy game based on the movie that had Jar Jar in it. And if and when you do get to play, you'll be pretty sure from the outset who's going to win, which may decrease your involvement in and enjoyment of the game. Personally, I still like to play as the Naboo, as I'm convinced that one of these days I will discover the secret strategy that will allow me to win. (The trick is probably to have the Force on your side.)

5An Outstanding game!
By A Customer
I've played the game and watched it played about 20 times. The battles have involved about 14 different people over these games.

The game balance is incredible, partly due to the random nature of the cards. Out of the 20 games I've played/seen, only 1 was a blowout. The others all went down to the wire. The excitment level in this game is excellent.

One thing the previous reviewer wrote that does differ from my experience is the time involved. The games normally take between 45 minutes to 2 hours. 4 hours may have been for the very first game when everyone was learning the rules.

I am very impressed by this release by AH/Hasbro. If this says anything about future titles, I will be a loyal customer for years to come.

I cannot recommend this game enough.

5The best boardgame I've played yet
By GoldElite
I have played this game numerous times. It is a very fun game. It is mostly a startegy game, so I don't reccomend it to people who won't enjoy sitting down and really thinking hard before each move. You play as either the Trade Federation or the Naboo. Neither side is overall better than the other one in my opinion, but they are better than eachother in certain battles.

1- Theed Palace- Either side could win

2- Nabbo Plains- Sorry Naboo player, but the Trade Federation has ya on this one

3. Anikin to the control ship- Well, the Trade Federation really can't win because Anakin can only be slowed down, not destroyed. It might take a while, but eventually Anakin will get to the Control Ship and the Nabbo player will win that particular battle

4. Dual of the Fates- I think the Nabbo player has a slight advantage, but there is no guarentee on how this will go

All in all, it's a great game, it's fun, not very educational, (but hey, how educational can a boardgame based on a Starwars movie be right?) but their is a slight durability problem. The figures are fairly durable, but the Theed Palace board is not. It is not very secure and falls easily if bumped into. I think it should have been made a little better, and you have to be careful when moving the pices on this board. I definetly recommend it to others though and I hope anyone who buys it has as much fun with it as I do.
