4One very useful Product for the Video Enthusiast
By James Frear
This is one of the newest and hottest new combination DVD/VCR combinations on the market today. Upon picking up my purchase of the HR-XVC1U I was impressed. The finish and construction of this product is first rate, and it provides just about every feature one could hope for in a combination unit. Although it does not provide progressive scan for the HD TV owner, for those of us who have a 2 to 3 year old large screen set of 32 - 36 or projection size, it performs admirably. It will play SVHS tapes, and record and play VHS with a clarity I have not seen even on my older SVHS unit. It will also record VHS and show a DVD at the same time. Hook ups and Outputs will impress even the most demanding. The DVD will play all DVD and CD formats. The Remote, it should be noted, is not Universal with the exception of other JVC products, and the Users manual was obviously written by someone with English as a second language. However, if you are able to look past these small limitations, you will not be disappointed. I highly reccomend this product.

5Perfect for its price!
By Eliza Doll
I purchased this JVC VHS/DVD combo player after my old VCR pooped out and when I decided I needed a DVD player in my room in addition to the one in our family room. I bought this player when it first came out; VHS/DVD combo players were brand new and seemed much more sensible than separate players. However, I had reservations about this unit, wondering if the quality of the DVD and VHS portions would suffer since both were crammed into one box. My fears were unfounded-- this indeed is a fantastic player!

First, I really enjoy the chrome finish; it perfectly matches my silver 24" flat-screen TV. Second, I love the unit's included remote. All of the buttons are solidly formed, and the rew/play/ff/rec/stop/pause buttons glow in the dark for watching movies late at night. Third, the quality of VHS recording is wonderful. I don't know what other reviewers are talking about when they complain of poor quality tape recording; everything I've taped, even on the "EP" (extra-long play) setting, has come out wonderfully. Sometimes, programs taped on certain VCRs look fuzzy on other sets in the house (i.e. if I try to record downstairs with a different VCR and play it back in my room), but anything I tape with this JVC unit is crystal clear on each set in our house. Fourth, I love the different A/V options the JVC unit is capable of utilizing. The JVC unit allows RCA, composite, S-Video, and component cable connections, so use whatever connection works with your TV. I strongly recommend using the component cable hookup as it offers the highest-quality picture. Fifth, I love the functions of the DVD player. Not only does this JVC player offer standard DVD functions like subtitles and markers, it also offers cool functions like zooming. DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs, and VCDs are supported, but SVCDs are not. Sixth, this quality piece of equipment comes at a great price. JVC makes a great unit, and the price is affordable, so don't buy another brand in hopes of getting a better deal.

The JVC VHS/DVD player has several A/V options, provides high-quality recording, looks great, comes with a super remote, supports many popular disc formats, and does all of these things for an affordable price. If you're looking for a high-quality, yet modestly-priced piece of equipment to handle your VHS and DVD needs, look no further than this great JVC unit.

4it's a good quality unit for the money
By R. Klein
Trying to get two audio pieces into one box, offering decent quality, plenty of useful features & low cost may be impossible. I looked at many brands. I needed a unit that has "optical" output for DTS & 5.1 digital to go into my Marantz SR 8000 audio receiver. The cheapest units do not have this, so stay with the better name brands. At this price point I seriously doult that any brand will be very reliable. These units are not being made in Japan, which stood for excellent quality. Instead, China, Tawain, etc. are making them. Making two units into one may save on some costs, but the cost cutting may be the use of cheaper parts inside. So don't expect much from these units.

I wanted to replace my older DVD player with one that plays CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3. I purchased the JVC HRXVC1, based on good reviews. JVC is the inventor of VHS vcr, and I have known people to have good luck with their electronics. I also like Panasonic, which makes very reliable electronics. I have had 3 good vcrs with Panasonic, but the clerk said that they were having higher than normal returns on their combo players. Had it not been for that, I would stay with Panasonic. This JVC HRXVC1 vcr/dvd combo has more than enough features needed to play tapes & discs. At this pricepoint it appears to be one of the best featured units I've seen. Hooking it up to my surround receiver was difficult, probably just my fault, although the book isn't clear on the hookup of the "optical" setup with the receiver connections with VCR, etc. Once hooked up, it was worth the effort. The setup was quick and easy. The cds sounded great. The dvd's are crystal clear. The vcr recorded tapes are playing good, and no problems....

The GOOD: 1).It works & sounds great. 2.) It looks great on the shelf as well. 3.) There are plenty of features for the money such as Skip Search, index serch, zero return, and three step zoom. 4.) There are front inputs for camcorder or mp3 player to record easy. 5.) This unit has "SQPB" S-VHS Quasi playback which will play S-VHS tapes, and makes for excellent looking viewing of standard tapes. 6.) It has 19um head, for better picture quality in EP mode. 7.) It includes "Spatializer N-2-2" surround for people whose sytems are not setup for surround sound yet. 8.) In use, the rewind & forward is very fast.

The BAD: 1.) the remote [is not good]. 2.)the buttons on the box seem unorthodox in their layout. 3.) it's confusing getting around from vcr to dvd, as some buttons have dual use, and buttons are on both sides of the unit. Petty problems, but at least the unit works fine- so far. If it proves to be unreliable, I'll write back.

5THIS is the storage chest you need!
By Soozie4Him
Our family bought some new patio furniture this year, and now we have 4 chair cushions, 1 chaise lounge cushion, and 3 cushions that go on our new 3-person swing! Leaving them out isn't an option if you want them to stay nice, and storing them in the house or garage and bringing them out when you want to sit down isn't very practical.

So I started looking for storage chests. My husband didn't believe that Amazon would carry such items, but being a long-time Amazon-shopper, I know that it's the first place to go for info and reviews on good products to buy!

I saw that smaller storage chests are just too small. One of them had a number of reviews saying that you can't even put cushions to 4 chairs in there. I knew we needed something bigger.

We are thrilled with this storage chest. My husband said it was a pleasure to put together - ridiculously easy - no tools required and the plastic pieces just snap together! I wish I could say the same for the rest of our patio furniture! Also, this item is extremely well-made. You can open the lid, or prop the lid up with the stick provided (like a grand piano's small stick) and open the doors. You can also put a padlock on it.

This is an attractive addition to our patio and it holds our 8 cushions with room to spare!

Enjoy your summer on the patio!

5Good feel to the material, easy assembly, attractive and solid
By RL
The title says it all. After reading the other glowing reviews and comparing prices, I decided it was almost a wash price-wise to buy online vs local. The box it comes in is large and somewhat awkward so I decided to let UPS deliver it! It came with a minor amount of box scuffs but the product inside was fine. (If you live upstairs, the delivery will be a little tricky.) The large box can later be used to slide several kids down a grassy hill together. The plastic material is a good color and very tough. It is well finished and designed to be stiff but also flexible. The pieces were all straight and fit together very well. I had the whole thing together (with a hand from my 8 yr old) in about 10 minutes. It is best to assemble the unit where you intend to have it live since it is pretty big. Where I installed it, I have a rock wall that protrudes out around it on each side. It was 2" too big and I crammed it in anyway. I must have beat and slammed on this thing for 20 minutes and I finally got it in there to find it just wouldn't work well. I then spent another 15 minutes getting it out. After all was said and done, the thing works as if I had never abused it at all!! Very resilient!!I used this storage unit as on outside "dumpster" to store trash bags in so I don't have to step around them and have the smell in the garage anymore during the summer. It cleans out great with the hose and it comes with a "prop bar" that slides down inside one wall to hold up the lid if necessary. The front splits and opens up barn door style and the door design works very well, the doors can be removed easily too.I built a 2x6 wood base on the bottom to give it more stability and weight but that isn't required. There are 4 spots already molded in the floor of the unit for bolts if you like. There is also a spot on the back walls for a 12" shelf about 12" or so from the top if this is desired. All in all a great purchase, I wish this had been available a long time ago!UPDATE JAN 2009:Unit is still in great shape after a couple years of outdoor use. I am still happy with the purchase and it has served its light duty "dumpster" purpose very well. It cleans up easily from grease or other trash related messes. Overall, this continues to be a winner and should last for many years to come.Minor Use and Foundation Notes: The unit really needs to be on a level surface. My son uprooted the stakes I had it anchored with and until I got it re-anchored, the lid/doors wouldn't shut right. In addition, my wife has a hard time keeping the lid secured in the back due to opening it up too far and then not shutting it right. I routinely have to re-open it, re-seat the rear hinge and then close it. In essence, you need two hands to close it right and it requires a little attention due to the removable nature of the lid and the "prop-bar/kickstand" on the right front. This isn't a huge problem, just something to keep in mind if it will be used by kids or lots of people who won't pay much attention to this.UPDATE 03/01/2011: So far, so good! Still going strong, no defects except slight fading. Warpage is minimal and unit still works about 90% of how it did when new. Plastic is still pliable and everything works the same. Note (FWIW) that this unit sits between my house and the neighbor on the east side so it doesn't get 100% direct sun all day. More like 1/3 of the day. I'm still very happy with this purchase, buy this with no regrets!

5Good product but a lot for shipping - my mistake
By Edward Greer
The product is just fine. I could have purchased a different brand of the same thing at a local Lowes Hardware for an extra $20.00 and saved $25.00 on shipping. The reason I bought it was because I thought I was gaining a few inches in depth that would have been helpful. Turns out the measurements were exactly the same. The advertised measurements were outside vs inside.

4Needs at least 1 or 2 shelves included
By Wood Creation's
This is a solid body storage building exactly as advertised. My goal was to store a mower, trimmer, blower, gas and miscellaneous items. I had to build a shelf (not included) notch it to fit and install it before putting roof in place. It works great for gas and miscellaneous items leaving room for taller items but they must be tilted some. If you have a mower with retractable handles (which I do not) it will fit in this building. (So mower is still out) Other than that it has cleared up the mess in the back and locks the flammables up too.Be careful to read instructions because it would be very difficult to take pieces apart after clicked into place. If you are planning to store a mower I would recomend a larger unit just for ease of use. This one is great for a lot of gardening supplies but I think they should provide at least 2 or more shelves.

4Just right for outdoor storage, a little small, needs small tool solution
By Kristin Zhivago
Relatively easy to assemble. Definitely keeping the weather out. Great for storing long-handled tools, not so great for smaller tools. Needs a wire basket or some other way of storing smaller tools such as clippers and trowels, away from the bottom. I'm hoping to solve that problem, and when I do, I will consider this purchase a success. It's not as attractive as a wood shed, but for the money, and if you don't have much space, this is a good solution.Update, Sept 2009 - we bought one of those "shower accessories" - several wire trays on a pole - modified it just slightly (I think we had to shorten it to fit) and installed it in the back left corner of the shed. That's where we keep our small tools, and it works well. There are two other problems with this shed. One, if the wind is really strong (we live on a bay), it can blow over. We used a piece of wood to attach it to the side of the house, and that solved the problem. Two, it's a favorite place for wasps and hornets to build their nests. Lots of little nooks and crannies, in the ceiling of the shed and inside the doors. It's not a show-stopper, but if you buy one, keep an eye on it, especially if you have little ones.

5Good inside design for maximum usage
By runfast
You can put up to 6 shelves inside to fully use all the cubic space available. But you may just need 4 and leave the lower two open for big size items to be stored. Rubbermaid has a similar size shed but it can only accept three shelves and waste a lot of spaces. The Rubbermaid shed uses much fewer pieces to assembly than this one. The assmbly is pretty easy if you follow the manu but it does take some time (1-2 hours). After I finished the assembly there were some rain and the inside was try except a couple of water drops. The only concern is its sturdiness since it's assembled with 28 pieces and so far so good. I don't expect it can stand a ternado or hurricane. One thing I wan to alert you: when you buy the shelves do measure the inside and ignore the manu since if you buy the side according it yuo will find the shelves will shift too much to the left or right. You want them more stable, right?Recommended.

5Music Table
By amynicole902
My son received this table when he was 8 months old, and still plays with it on an almost daily basis. The legs are detachable, I guess so it can be placed on the floor for babies, but we never did that... This table helped our son into a standing position, and encouraged him to "cruise". The variety of music it provides is great, and hasn't even begun to get old yet (even for mom & dad). Now at almost 2, I've noticed that my son is starting to make his own music instead of just "pressing buttons" . Pressing the drums, the piano, then back to the drums... I'm sure this table will last for years to come, especially once he becomes more interested in his letters, numbers, and colors. I would DEFINITELY recommend this product for EVERY child!

5This is a hit with the whole family!
By A Customer
I just recently splurged on this for my 8 month old son. He is just learning to stand up on his own and is constantly trying to pull things off tables or bother our poor dog. I quickly realized that an activity table might keep those busy hands busy.I agonized over the purchase, for it was going to be the first big toy I bought for our small house. I looked at the Microsoft Intelli-table, but it looked a little Atari-ish with it's flashing lights in the middle. I looked at the Fisher Price models with the blocks (which were cheaper), but I figured that Legos would be the block of choice soon enough.I was sold on the LeapStart b/c of the musical theme. It has a banjo that plays bluegrass, a compartment that scats when you open it, it has shapes that plays the drums, a bass that plays the bass, etc. But here is the best part, it is all real music, not some electronic rendition of good music, the real stuff. For parents, it is a godsend, b/c it is not offensive to listen to over and over again (but it does have volume control for those times when you need it).My child was actually squealing with delight when I gave it to him. It is now his favorite thing to play with, and he has finally found something more interesting than crawling after our old dog. I would have paid much more for this toy.

5An all around great toy/learning center
By Jolene Nelson
I could not wait until Christmas to let my 8 month old play with this toy. It was incredibly easy to assemble. It has detatchable legs for those babies who can sit up but cannot stand or just prefer to sit, it has two modes: one is learning numbers, colors letters, and more, and the other mode is a musical mode, the child can change the modes simply by fliping the page of the book. The music is great it is not your standard old mac donald. It has an upbeat jazzy sound. There are grippers on the bottom of the legs so that when baby leans against the table it doesn't move away from her/him. Emily loves this table, in fact when I held her up and faced her toward it her little feet couldn't move fast enough for me to help her over to it. The makers of this table have definately put serious thought into it. So far it is well worth the money!!

4you've got mail
By A Customer
My 18 month old son loves getting the mail so this toy was a great find! We have it next to HIS play house. It includes 3 plastic envelopes in 3 different colors so you can work on colors and numbers and there are slots to store them in besides just putting them into the mailbox by opening the door or putting them in through the back or slot on the side in the mailbox. There are also 3 square shaped stackers (packages) also in different colors that he loves to build with or put into one another. There is a bee that buzzes when you push it around the mail box which he thinks is funny. A flexible butterfly is adorning the top of the mailbox along with a clicking catapillar and spinning ladybug at the bottom. Oh and the red flag also click and moves! My son has been quite entertained by this toy. It's great for exercising motor skills and imagination. The only negatives I would say are that it tips pretty easly and there should be an off/on switch for the buzzing bee. It's actually very cute but it would be nice to be able to control. Whether your children are into getting the mail or not this is a wonderful toy!!!

4Great toy idea but should be redesigned
By A Customer
My 12 month old got this for her birthday. I was really wanting her to have this product. She loved playing with a smaller mailbox that was on one of her other toys so I thought she would really enjoy it. She loves getting the mail in and out of it and she likes playing with the containers that stack inside each other on the base. There is only one fault...it tips over very easily. So whenever she opens the door on the mailbox it falls over on her. They should have made the base weighted especially since its for the toddler age group.

5What Fun!
By apoem
My three year old will still play with this at times. My two year old girl has had a ball with this toy. They enjoy playing mailman and getting mail and sending mail. They enjoy all the pieces that click and move and so on.

If you are like me and appreciate toys that are fairly quiet, easy to play with, fun and durable, this is a good toy to buy.It encourages both small and gross motor skills. It encourages creative play and imagination and exploration of the world.

I would consider this toy well worth the money.Enjoy

2Casio missed a beat with the LD-80
By C.D. Cracknell
The nice features are the seven velocity sensitive drum pads which will transmit MIDI data to control other MIDI drum kits. Other than that the LD-80 does not have much to offer the serious musician.

The drum and synth samples are very grainy 8-bit sounding samples and there is a lot of noise on the signal. It sounds more like an early 80s digitial drum machine than real drums. Infact some of the sounds seem to be lifted directly from the famous Casio RZ-1 drum machine from the days when Casio still made professional music equipment. The machine has some bigger problems than mediocre sounds. For starters the pedal inputs are not velocity sensitive which means sounds played on the pedals will sound out of place with the more expressive sounds played on the pads.

Worse than this is the fact that the machine has very poorly implimented MIDI capabilities. There's no excuse for this as the machine has a good enough control panel to have been able to access more MIDI features so adding them would not have increased the cost. If you plan to use the LD-80 as a drum machine in your MIDI rig you will be annoyed to discover that the machine responds to MIDI data on all 16 channels. You cannot disable the channels you do not wish the machine to respond to. Channels 1-9 play General MIDI patches, Channel 10 plays a General MIDI mapped drum kit and channels 11 to 16 play different mapped drum kits including sounds not accessable by the pads or even mentioned in the manual. While it may sound like a bonus feature not covered in the manual that your LD-80 will also function as a synth module you will soon discover that with only 16 voices you will max out the polyphony pretty quickly in even a modest MIDI sequence. The fact that channels cannot be disabled on the LD-80 pretty much eliminate's it's usefullness as a MIDI drum machine and synth module for the serious musician who employ other MIDI synths in their rig. I was very disappointed with this. Either the engineers who designed this product were too lazy to impliment proper MIDI capabilities or they just no longer understand what musicians need in a MIDI instrument.

One thing that is rather nice about the LD-80 is the learning system built into it to help non-drummers learn to drum. A selection of auto-rythmes with auto-accompanyment as well as a few songs that the novice can drum along to in time with the syncronized light flashes on the pads makes practicing a bit more fun. Unfortunately poor implimentation of MIDI prevents these auto-rythmes from being useful for much else as you cannot start, stop, or sync the rythmes from MIDI.

It is cheaper than its closest competitor, the Yamaha DD-55, but if you're looking for a drum machine and not just a MIDI percussion controller then you'd probably do well to look elsewhere. If all you want is a set of pads to control other MIDI drum machines or a cheap kit for your kids to learn to drum on (the headphones are great for this) then the Casio LD-80 will fit the bill nicely.

Saddly what could have been a great product has been reduced to a somewhat okay product due to Casio's lack of vision.

1This was the worst buy I have ever made
By Paul L Turney
ok, i wrote a review about this product a while back on this same page saying how good it was. I take EVERYTHING i said back. This is bound to be the worst buy I have ever made. I have had this product only 4 months, and three of the pads are broken. 2 will only make a very slight noise when you beat at it as hard as you can, and the other one is completely dead, and i do not believe i hit this drum set any more than anyone else. This machine has great sounds, but it has the worst durability ever. Do not buy this machine, I swear you will regret it, it may be good for little kids wanting to learn to play the drums but for any other use besides that, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

5Awesome!
By Randall B. Stewart
THis is no toy! This thing rocks! It's awesome! I got it for my wife for her birthday. She played the drums in high school. We have 5 kids so a real drum set would be in danger of being destroyed in our house. We are so happy that we bought this Casio electronic drum set over the real thing. It's loud, it's digital, and all of it's options and perks make it more than fun. The headphone option is great too. Again, I can't get over the sound....it's so real and so crisp. We love it!

OXO's Kettles - The Pressure is On

In 199X, OXO introduced its first Tea Kettle. Safety and practicality were the guiding principles during the development process, and our little Kettle came complete with an innovative steam shield.

Through user feedback, we realized we missed a key consumer insight - that a Tea Kettle, while a practical kitchen tool, is often a centerpiece in the kitchen. Users would leave them out on the stovetop when not in use and some even coordinated their entire kitchen decor around their Kettles. While the steam shield was innovative, it was considered by many to be unsightly.

In 1998, we corrected the aesthetic flaws to our otherwise safe, practical and well-performing Kettle with the Uplift. The kicker is that all of its elegant aesthetics came as a direct result of making the Uplift safe and easy to use.

Problems Identified
  • Handles on tea kettles are positioned too close to the steam and hot water at the spout, making it uncomfortable while pouring
  • Angle of kettle handles combined with weight of filled kettle make it difficult for users to lift and pour without straining wrists
  • Fine motor skills required to open kettle trigger to pour hot water; difficult for many older users to maneuver
  • Small opening on top makes it difficult to clean interior of kettle
The Process
  • The quest for the perfect interaction point between the spout and the handle (so the kettle would not open when carried around filled with water, but would open easily when tipped forward) led us to the current connection between the spout and handle, one that resembles a splash of water.
  • The same connection point was also designed to keep the spout open if the user chose, so that they could keep the Uplift's whistle quiet while boiling water, which is especially handy when preparing an early morning cup of tea.
  • While designing an opening large enough to be easy to clean, we needed to ensure it wasn't so low as to limit the maximum water level, but we still needed to keep it in balance with the spout for aesthetic reasons.
  • Through user research, we learned that steam would sometimes escape from the lid and unfortunately heat the handle, so we added a silicone seal to minimize any unintended heat transfer and keep the kettle safe and easy to use.
OXO's Solutions
  • Large, comfortable handle is angled away from the spout and is heat resistant and non-slip, even when wet
  • Handle angle allows user to hold Kettle comfortably and without wrist strain, whether filled with water or nearly empty, by adjusting grip accordingly
  • Whistle spout opens automatically when Kettle is tipped to pour - no awkward buttons or levers to press
  • Wide opening on top of Kettle enables easy access for cleaning and can also be used as an opening to fill Kettle
The OXO Story

In 1990, OXO staged a revolution (of sorts) by offering an easy-to-use, high-performing alternative to uncomfortable and ineffective kitchen gadgets. OXO's innovative take on the traditional Swivel Peeler, complete with its pudgy black handle, raised consumers' expectations of what could be expected from household products.

Today OXO offers over 800 products, each developed with a close (some might say "obsessive") attention to detail. Our goal is to deliver products that maximize comfort AND performance, illustrating our mission to create innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

Ever wonder what makes an OXO product an "OXO Product"?

OXO employees believe there are two rules that should guide product development: First, every new product must deliver a significant improvement over the status quo. Second, the functionality should never be sacrificed to make the product more attractive - above all it should work well.

5Finally... Success!
By Sherlock, the shopper
Tired of disappointments experienced with other more cumbersome and certainly less-melodic whistling tea kettles, I perused various websites for a stylish, functional replacement. The Uplift's recent reviews were consistently promising; so I placed my order, which was delivered sooner than anticipated. The Uplift is perfect: cheery red appearance, reliable harmonic whistle, easy to use without errant steam scalding my fingers, and easy to clean. I absolutely love it!.... Have you seen all those color choices?

3Not sure I'd buy again
By Saint Teresa
We wanted a kettle that wouldn't burn our hands everytime we used it, as our old Chantal kettle did. Well, this Oxo accomplished that, but when they say use over medium heat, they mean it. When the kettle sat on our gas range with the heat slightly higher than medium, the plastic around the whistle mechanism melted. This is not what I expected from a $50.00 kettle. Also the whistle is so high pitched it has all the charm of stone scratched over slate. Don't know if I would buy this again.Picky in the Kitchen

5Tea Pot
By jpgee
Gave this as a gift and it was worth every penny spent. Flat bottom for a fast boil and opens when tilted. Great for 90yr old dad and 86yo mom. Also looks great and well made.
