3Soft at longer focal lengths
By Geoffrey O.
I bought this lens for my Pentax K100D. The folks over at FredMiranda gave it consistantly good reviews, and the zoom range seemed perfect for a general walk-around lens. It is certainly a nicely-built lens and a comfortable weight. I found the auto-focus to be quick and generally accurate. The lens took great pictures in the 24-100 mm portion of the focal range, but I could not get good pictures out of it at the longer focal lengths for the life of me. I tried different apertures, manual focus, tripod, everything I could think of, but almost everything came out too soft for my taste. I am a hobbyist, not a pro, so maybe the problem was user error. Or maybe I got a bad copy of the lens. I am open to these possibilities, but I felt I should share my experience, regardless. If I'd only wanted 24-100, I'd have bought something different. I ended up sending this lens back, and I'm considering Pentax's 24-90, now, which is supposed to be quite good. Props to Amazon for the usual quick shipping and painless return policy.

5TAMRON 24-135mm f3.5-5.6
By Ernest M. Berube
Difficult, in a short review like this, to give this product enough credit. But, if short can be sweet, then I'll try 2 words for those who do not want to read on: AWESOME VALUE!!! SP=Superior Performance. The lens produces beautiful colors, covering the 24-135mm range splendidly. I've shot with dozens of lenses, but can't give this one enough credit. The lens is sharp, throughout the range, & known to excel at the wide end. The lens is also Full Frame compatible: it is not just an APC optimized lens. Even on Full FRame it receives many accolades--see, for example, [...] where the lens receives the highest rating of all current Tamron zoomsA great Walk-around lens, and a very satisfying upgrade from any makers' Kit lens. It renders scenes with a special quality, which works for my landscapes in particular. Even though I own the Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 & Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, this lens enjoys a place in my bag, especially for hikes where faster apertures are not usually desired. I find 24mm most useful on APC sensors,And the icing on the cake, is the nice construction of the lens, something often missing these days in lenses. It has an aperture ring, a Zoom lock, and a knurled and dampened focus ring for those who still venture into manual focus. A bayonett, Flower-petal type, plastic hood is supplied, along with the nicest lens pouch I have ever received with a lens purchase--free with the price of the lens, not at additional charges, as many manufacturers often do.

2loose parts
By D. Lively
Lens has a small plastic ring that covers the screws in the back of the lens. This ring is not retained in any way. In my case this ring came out of the lens and jammed my cameras mirror in the up position. The advice given by Tamron was to send the lens to them and they will decide if the warranty applies. I can not have a lens that has parts that can fall into my camera. Will not buy another Tamron product.

5Best Photo Printer on the Market
By Stephen W. Hinch
After receiving this printer and making numerous prints, I have decided to dismantle my traditional darkroom! For years I held back from going completely digital because photo quality printers were not up to the standards I had come to expect from my Cibachrome prints. All that has changed with the Epson Stylus 2000P. Image quality is superb, indistinguishable with the naked eye from silver halide-based prints. While I have not personally tested longevity, if the reported 200-year lifetime is anywhere near correct these prints are better than Cibachromes. And going digital has other advantages. I have already made outstanding prints from transparencies I would never have thought about printing in the past because of the complicated masks I would have had to create. A good photo software program (I use Corel PhotoPaint) makes it easy to do difficult contrast and color corrections. The 2000P was easy to set up. An excellent quick-start sheet had me making my first print less than 20 minutes after taking the printer out of the box. The Windows installation program was straightforward. The only thing I didn't like is that it made the 2000P my default printer without asking me. This was easy to fix. I was also surprised to discover it came with three boxes of papers: 50 sheets of premium luster, 50 sheets of archival matte, and 20 sheets of 13x19 watercolor paper. Plus a sample pack of various media. Nice job Epson. Don't plan to use this as your everyday printer. It is optimized for printing photos and should be used for such. A 13 meg photo took about 10 minutes to print using the parallel interface (I will convert to USB as soon as I get a cable), which might seem slow but is still faster than chemical-based prints. As a 25-year Hewlett-Packard employee (now with Agilent Technologies as a result of the company split) it was very difficult for me to decide to buy Epson. But in the area of photo quality archival output there is just no alternative. All in all, I am extremely satisfied.

5Expensive, but worth it.
By Jared Yaffe
I bought this printer based on reviews at ZDnet and News.com. They both claimed that this printer is the best thing since sliced bread, and I have to agree. I am a professional graphic designer. I use this printer to assist in making proofs for 11x17 posters and phone card designs. I have never seen photo quality this good on an inkjet. Photos on the 2000P look better than the output on my ALPS thermal wax printer, better than the hippopotamus-sized Tektronix at Kinkos, and better than the proofs I typically get when I send my QuarkXPress and Photoshop files to the print shop. One of the best features of this printer is its ability to print bleeds. I can print 11x17 right to the edge of the paper. The drawbacks... This printer is not for the amateur user. To get high quality output you really need to know what you are doing. You need to use the right kind of paper with the right print job. You need to understand the differences between the different print modes. You need to high quality source material (like 600dpi 32bit TIFF images). You need to read the manual. If you are taking pictures with a digital camera and you are expecting to plug in and get photo quality output right away, you are only going to be disappointed. Also, the printer is expensive to maintain (expect about $1.50/page when you factor in paper and inks), and very slow. I've found that it usually exceeds 5 minutes per page when printing photos. Of course, this printer is not designed for speed or ease of use, its designed to be an alternative to using a print shop for photo-quality proofs. Use it only as it was intended to be used, and you will cherish this printer.

4Getting Better all the Time
By A Customer
The quality of this printer is very good. However, the ink pigments behave strangely in different light...ie sun vs. indoor, so be prepared. Using a high end program like Photoshop is also a little complicated - it is important to keep all color adjustments off and make sure that all the outputs to media match exactly the PS and Mac ColorSync specs. But once you have probably wasted 20 to 40 sheets of paper, and you've got it right, it's really amazing. I have also had the best results with the semigloss paper, but it is difficult to come by in letter size.

    4Tamron 20-40mm F/2.7-3.5-Nikon
    By Funseeker
This Tamron is a very well made, sharp above F4, a little heavy compared to today's zooms, but the results are great. I shoot a lot of cars, and the distortion is controlled very well. The only real negative that I have found so far is the lens has a lot of flare. You really should use the lens shade on this one. The one I received is the re designed version of the one pictured. I wish they would get the picture right. I really wanted the version pictured. For an older lens, it works very well with the digital camera's. I have tried it on the D70 and the D90 with no problems. Highly recommended.

3nice upgrade, but could be better
    By Scott Reynolds
this would be a great upgrade for someone using a 200-500 mhz pc, but if you have a older pc than check with your motherboard manufacturer or pc manufacturer before doing anything.

At this price you could get a hole new motherboard and an AMD chip running at a ghz. If you have an old pc you should probably get a new motherboard anyway.

4Excellent lens, a true prime killer
    By MFH
The Tamron 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 wide angle zoom lens is a super versatile, super sharp lens. It is widely regarded as a "prime killer," meaning it will easily replace the wide angle prime lenses you typically use, such as your 24mmm, 28mm, or 35mm lenses. Even wide open at f/2.7, the Tamron shoots sharp and true. I use it indoors and out will great success. Having it go all the way up to 40mm is nice, as you can get into portrait territory with that focal point, making this a very versatile lens indeed.Construction quality is high, with solid, heavy components, rubberized grip, solid lens hood, etc. This is a lens that should last for years to come.My only complaints with it are 1.)the autofocus is noisy and can hunt a bit, and 2.)lens flare can be a problem with this lens. Typically, I use the lens hood so flare isn't a problem, but be aware that you may experience more lens flare on this unit than on other modern lenses. As for the AF, it works, so no real complaints. The noise is a bit loud, and sometimes the lens hunts a little longer than I'd like for focus, but other than that, no complaints.Over all, this lens is a 4.5 to me. Look up reviews about it, and you'll see that it is a widely loved and used lens. A bit rare, so if you can find a copy, snag it. It's often compared to higher end L glass and other lenses that cost twice as much, and again, often replaces a slew of lenses because it shoots so well.

    By C. Piekarz
I purchased this for astrophotography purposes, I'm using it with a Canon Rebel XSi (EOS 450D).As the description says, using this costs you 2 stops. Autofocus has been hit and miss for me; my 50mm prime searches a bit, but usually focuses fine. My Tamron 70-300mm Di LD lens won't autofocus at all.Quality-wise, I get noticable purple fringing in some images, but nothing that's uncorrectable.I'm definitely recommend this to anybody searching for a cheap teleconverter - If you want quality though, get the Canon version.

    By B. Kocen
I wanted a larger lens and not the price. On my 70 to 300mm cannon lens it works ok.At higher lens values it has a hard time auto focusing but just switching to manual solved that. I shot mostly race cars, durning the day so the loss of 2 f-stops is not a problem. Have not tried it inn teh early or late hours with lower light. Pictures are sharp and clear.

    5Good beginner-serious amateur scanner
    By Dave
After reading review after review for film scanners I decided to purchase the HP S20xi and I don't regret it. If I properly exposed a slide in the first place I hardly need to make any adjustments to the scanned sample. The S20xi scans my color and chromogenic negatives wonderfully. The scanning software that is including in the box is good. With it you can crop, adjust brightness, shadow areas, colors, etc. before you perform the actual scan. My only complaint so far (I've only had it for three days and I've scanned about 60 pictures so far) is the dust. I have a light box and I clean the neg/slide until I'm sure it's spotless before I put it in the scanner. The scanned image still has some dust spots and I've use air on the scanner to no avail. It's not too big of a deal to me to remove the dust spots using Photoshop, but it would be nice if the scanner had ICE or at least was willing to let my air remove the dust! Overall, I'm very happy with the S20xi...if you want to enhance your images for personal digital printing or simply archive your photo library to CD (as I'm doing), the S20xi is a good alternative to higher priced scanners.

    5A dependable workhorse
    By caninehead
I have an earlier SCSI version of this scanner (over 6 years old now and it still works great, how many IT products can you say that about?). In fact, it was my first scanner of any sort. It is a dependable workhorse that produces quality scans. The feeder for slides, film strips and prints is convenient. I use it to scan my 35 mm slides for submission to a magazine I contribute to and have had many published, some directly from the scans. It is rare that I ever scan above 600x800, even for direct publication. It is also a workhorse for my scans for web publishing and digital archiving. This scanner is the single best IT investment I have made over the years. HP's web site does include XP drivers for this scanner.

    3Good Amateur Scanner
    By Gerald W. Stump
This scanner will do what the ads and reviews say it will do. This scanner does nice work on reproduction of family photos and slides into small paper prints. Resolution is marginal for display prints (depending on the slide and how large you want to go). I have used this scanner to archive 30 years of family and travel slides and am happy with the result. Now I am ready to start on film larger than 35mm and must turn to another scanner. I also would like to print 11x14 inch photographs and will have to rescan slides with a higher resolution machine. Keep in mind that this scanner will do the job it is intended to do but not much more.

Best Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic Taupe

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic TaupeBuy Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic Taupe

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic Taupe Product Description:

    • High-performance table radio with companion stereo speaker for superior sound reproduction
    • Attractive, furniture-grade, handmade wood cabinet doubles as acoustically inert housing
    • Pair of 3-inch long-throw drivers ensure accurate tonal balance and bass response
    • State-of-the-art discrete component FM tuner improves reception and increases clarity
    • Measures 8.375 x 4.5 x 5.25 inches (W x H x D) per cabinet; 1-year warranty

    Product Description

Stereophonic reproduction involves the separation of the left and right audio channels. So why then do most "stereo" radios closely-space two speakers in a single cabinet? The two-piece Model Two does stereo right–and left. Placing the matching cherry wood stereo speaker, with its 15' of cord, several feet from the main unit provides the detailed imaging and accurate soundstage that is so essential for true stereo reproduction. We consider the Model Two to be one of the finest stereo radios available, but don't take our word for it. Stereophile said, "...the Model Two is a fun piece of gear, and the left and right speakers in separate cabinets provide much more convincing stereo than two channels stuffed in one box." The Model Two uses a Henry Kloss designed tuner with cell phone technology for better FM reception and increased clarity on closely spaced stations and its 5:1 ratio analog tuning dial provides easy and accurate tuning. Other features include; Built in AM and FM antennas, 75-ohm external FM antenna input, switched auxiliary input for use with the Tivoli Audio Model CD, iPods, MP3 players, or portable CD players. A stereo headphone output is provided for private listening. A mixing input permits audio from your computer to be mixed in with the radio. There is also a dedicated subwoofer output (for the optional matching Model Subwoofer) and a balance control. The bass ports are located in the rear to accommodate vertical positioning where space is tight.

4Fantastic radio, a few minor problems
    By Brett Buck
First off - the radio is beautifully simple, and sounds remarkably good for what it is. I have really enjoyed listening to it, and it's total lack of any "harsh edges" means you can listen for hours. It also looks just fantastic, and is quite compact. But there are a few minor issues. As others have mentioned, the tuning dial is rather difficult to see in low light due to inadquate contrast between the brown background and gray numbers. That's not that big a deal, but it's a slight annoyance. Reception on FM is at least as good as any component tuner that I have tried, maybe better, even with the little monopole antenna supplied, or even with nothing/internal antennna. With a real external antenna, I'm quite sure that if the station was there, you'd hear it. Reception on AM, however, is nothing to write home about, and with no external antenna input it's a little difficult to correct. I got a Terk AM Advantage loop antenna and used it in "inductive coupling" mode, and that helps somewhat. But some stations are still very marginal. I'm close to opening it up and adding an external antenna input. I am in the process of making a very large loop antenna (hiding it by building it into a picture frame!) and that should solve it. But I suspect even a simple antenna, directly feeding the radio, would work better. Tuning is like the good old days, of course - turn the dial until you hear it best. It also has the modern equivalent of the "tuning neon lamp" on old tube tuners - an LED that indicates "tune". Analog is the right way to go.The knob is geared down 5:1 so you can really move it without overdoing it. But I have noticed that sometimes the LED is "rate-sensitive". If you turn the knob quickly, you can really get it bright, but if you turn it slow, you can never get it as bright no matter what you do. This is just a minor irritation. A slightly more difficult issue is that there seems to be a lot of "slop" in the gear mechanism. Turn it one way until you go past peak, then back, and it takes a fair amount of turning the opposite way until it moves at all. It *feels* great. I have been running it back-to-back with my real stereo, and of course it has some limitations. What do you expect for $159 and 3-inch speakers? My real system is probably 20-30 times the cost. Somewhat surprisingly, the biggest practical limitations seem to be on the high frequency end. The low end, even without the accessory subwoofer, seems plenty good enough for real music. It's very slightly boomy at the very bottom of it's range, but nothing overly objectionable. I can't imagine needing the subwoofer. You definitely give up something on the high end, however, This can actually be good in some cases - listing to the local jazz station on a real hi-fi reveals the limitations of old reel-to-reel recording from the 50's in the form of tape hiss. It can really get on your nerves after a while. The Tivoli filters this out and has a very listenable, if not perfectly accurate, sound. There are no tone controls, but that's not a problem, and most high-end hi-fi preamps don't have tone controls, either. It gets more than loud enough, BTW. The case (cherry wood) is beautifully made and really adds to the "retro" look. The whole system has a very solid and substantial feel. It's not obvious, but there's are several external line-level inputs with which you can add external sources. For example, you can use the radio as your computer speaker, and it will mix the radio with the computer sounds. Or us the auxiliary input and add something else - like a portable CD player. I have listened extensively to the Bose Wave (the obvious competitor for expensive table radios), and there's NO comparison in terms of sound quality. The Tivoli is MUCH better, in my opinion. Given that it's also far less expensive, if that's the alternative, buy two Tivolis. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase. If it had a way to add an external AM antenna, it would be close to perfect.

5Love My Model Two's - All Four Of Them
    By TNIC
I started of with the Tivoli Model One and graduated to the Model Two. He sound and design either appeals to you or it dosent. In my opinion the Model Two sounds twice as good as the Model One. The stereo brings a lot more life to the music.I enjoy the Two for what it is, a compact good sounding stereo that is elegantly simple. No LCD or digital tuning, no buttons. It was designed by someone who understood a knob is just fine and a remote control would be overkill. I am sure there are those who are unable to cope with a "tuning knob". This is not a radio for those who can not handle that sort of challenge but if you want to try and develop your skills the radio includes an instruction manual or maybe you can have a friend coach you... I suspect the tuning knob and model 2 will be working long after the push button radios with, memories, LCDs, and remote controls have died and are polluting the land fill with all the other modern junk that does not last. Henry built radios to last. Check the KLH radios still in service on ebay and you might develop an appreciation for the design of this radio.I opened my model one and was grateful for the rare sight that greeted me inside. In an age of stamped surface mount components that could fit on the head of a pin and stand no chance of ever being repaired, the Model one and Model two use individual components. That is - resistors and components that are the kind you would recognize - not a bunch of microscopic chips mounted on a disposable board. If I have a chance I will photograph the inside and post it in the photos of the Model one and two for a rare glimpse of an item a human can solder. It is a bit comforting to me to see a device that could be repaired if it ever needed it. I believe the components and construction contribute the excellent sound. The Model 1, 2 and sub woofer do not use wall transformers (power vampires that burn electricity even when the unit is turned off). When you turn it off - its off. Not so with the CD player. I had to put that on a switched power strip to prevent it from needlessly polluting when it's turned off.I liked my model 2 so much I put one in the kitchen, office, bedroom and even living room next to the monster stereo for times when I am reading and don't want to fire up the tubes. The radio model two does not pretend to be a boom box rig that you will feel thumping on your chest. One look should tell you it's not that sort of radio. The audio power output of the Model one is 10 watts. The audio output of the Model two is 20 watts. 10 watts per channel. For some reason Tivoli refused to tell me the power output on the radios when I called them. This is odd. The paper work on the first ones I purchased listed it. The later purchases do not. Are they hiding something? If you like the model one you should take a listen to the model two. The stereo is well worth the extra cost. The speakers can be separated quite a bit for good stereo imaging even in a large room. It's a far better design and far better sounding than the well advertised Bose. It's ridiculous for all in one units to have speakers close together and INSEPARABLE. You limit the distance the stereo effect is best (maximum is about 2 to 2.5 times the distance the speakers are apart). On the Bose you can quickly see the best stereo effect is diminished a few feet from the speakers because they are so close together. With the model one you can spread the speaker many feet apart (or close together) for a much better stereo image that matches where you are listening. Duh...Henry did use his audio sensibility on the design. It is essentially 2 wood speaker cabinets with a radio in one, with strong reminders of the KLH heritage The cabinets, rear fire ducted bass ports and first class electronics are responsible for a surprisingly good sound. With 3 inch speakers you might need a sanity check if you expect window shaking bass. But there is enough bass for classical and modern music enjoyment for most listeners. I don't think you will find too many of these in collage dorms. I think it more and adult radio for those concerned with good clean sound rather than mega watts. My clock radio is a Boston Acoustic and it sounds good but the bass is over emphasized. The Model 2 sounds far better to me.I find the reception is very good. If your having trouble in a fringe area add several (up to 30 feet) of thin wire to the external antenna and flip the switch to external and you will be pulling in the most distant stations clearly. If the signal is good in your area the internal antenna (which is the power cord) should work just fine.I find the volume to be more than enough. As time went on I did purchase the subwoofer for the 2 . In the Model 2s case the sub fills out the sound, The 5 inch speaker in the woofer does add to the overall sound in a positive way. I think it's a worthwhile upgrade but not a requirement. If you find you like the model 2 and want more of that good sound, the sub can add to it.The CD player is also enjoyable. It all looks good and works well together. I do play an MP3 player through my model 2s and it works great. In the fall when we rent a cabin in a remote area, I bring along the model 2 and an MP3 player for unlimited music during our stay. The Model 2 is so small it travels well. I had not thought of this use when I purchased this radio, but it made perfect sense. While we have power at the cabins, you can power the model 2 off a 12 volt power source including a battery. If you're looking for a modest sized radio, I would not hesitate to recommend this setup to an adult who enjoys music and younger people who are not volume hungry. When I first looked at this radio I thought it was attractive and sounded great. As I used it I realized how well it was designed by an expert. It meets my needs on many levels. It is a good value.

    5This radio has no compitition
    By Paul R. Ladd
I must say, this radio is simply wonderful. I can honestly say that there is not another radio that I have heard that can be compared with the Tivoli Model Two. This radio has a warmth, crispness, and a silky smoothness that mass market plastic stereos simply can not match. This radio is very detailed and very musical. I used the Model Two with the Model Subwoofer and was simply amazed. The subwoofer is not like the ones in a boom box or small plastic stereo. The subwoofer simply ads to or extends the bass response of the Model Two table radio. The subwoofer does not make its presence known. If you close your eyes and take your thoughts off of the radio itself, the equipment seems to disappear and you are left focusing on the music and not the radio that is playing the music. The radio is not a thump box; it is not something that you would jam with. It is too elegant for that. The radio is rather better suited for musical enjoyment. I did not think that I would call a table radio elegant or say that a table radio has a sense of class and style. The cabinets are made of cherry wood and give the radio an expensive look. I can honestly say that if you are looking for a true music system that will bring you music without any hype, fancy displays, and are looking for an excellent bargain, then the Model Two is for you. There is simply nothing out there that is in the same league with it.

5Works Great, but you may need to change the SoundStation settings first
    By Michael Muha
The Polycomm Wireless Lapel Microphone works as advertised - we can walk quite far away from the SoundStation 2 we use and callers can easily hear us over the lapel mic. Works great for company meetings when the room is filled with people, a bunch more have dialed in, and the speaker is wandering around the room.We had an initial problem where the receiver indicated it was receiving a signal from the wireless mic, but the microphone seemed not to be picking up any sound. It turned out to be a menu setting on the SoundStation 2 that needed to be changed: Go into the menu, select "Settings" > "Aux Audio" and make sure it's set to "Wireless Mic" then press "Save".

    Product Description

Where performance and simplicity are paramount but space is sparse, the Model One table radio fits the bill. With just three knobs, it is the antithesis of today's ever more complex electronic products. The Model One gets more stations than other radios because of its state of the art, Henry Kloss designed discrete-component FM tuner using technology originally developed for cellular telephones. This technology gives better FM reception and increased clarity on closely spaced stations. Features include a furniture-grade, handmade walnut wood cabinet that doubles as an acoustically inert housing and a heavy-magnet, long-throw 3-inch speaker which provides musically accurate tonal balance and bass response. Its large analog tuning knob with geared-down 5:1 tuning ratio permits easy and accurate tuning. The amber tuning indicator lets you know when you've achieved proper tuning. Built-in AM and FM antennas provide satisfying reception, while a rear 75-ohm jack allows connection of an external FM antenna in difficult reception areas. Also provided is a headphone jack, auxiliary input to connect an iPod, MP3 player or portable CD player, and a record output for recording, or to use the Model One as a high-quality outboard tuner.

    5Simplicity + Great Sound = I Love It!
    By HippoRadio
Several years ago I inherited a KLH 21--the inspiration for Henry Kloss' current Tivoli Model One. It is among my most cherished possessions, but sentiment aside--this radio is an advancement of the KLH "original" in nearly every aspect.Audio tonal quality is much like "beauty"--it's in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. Considering the price and genre of this radio--I consider its audio fidelity to be exceptional--powerful and very pleasing. I prefer its design objective that incorporates ONE superior amp and speaker--opposed to TWO lesser channels for stereo. I've never been able to rationalize a "stereo" design where the speakers are separated by only eight-inches of face-plate!FM RECEPTION: I own way more than my fair share of radios. Is this product on par with the classic $1500-dollar McIntosh MR-78? Not at all, but remember--Amazon is asking you for a mere $120 to own this radio. Within all reasonable considerations--FM performance is excellent. I suspect the criticism of FM reception you read here is due to a couple factors that are not the fault of this radio. First, NO GOOD FM TUNER can tell the difference between a weak distant station and all the "RF trash" generated within your environment by computers, "smart" appliances, and security systems. In fact, a superior tuner is MORE prone to such interference. Secondly, EVERY GOOD FM TUNER requires a good antenna--lose that included 12-inch "rat tail". I use a C Crane "FM Reflect" tuned wire dipole which terminates directly into the 75-ohm coaxial external antenna connector on this radio. FM sensitivity, selectivity, and capture ratio are very good. I routinely receive distant signals with good quality, and I have NEVER seen this radio overload from a strong local signal at a reasonable distance from its transmitter.AM RECEPTION: My major criticism of this product is ironically my major accolade! Out of the box, this radio is unresponsive to all but the most powerful AM signals, and it IS NOT equally sensitive across the full 540-1700kHz band. This deficiency CAN be rectified with a $40 addition of the Terk "AM Advantage" inductively-coupled loop antenna. Set it atop or beside this radio, and the AM reception character changes dramatically. Maybe there is a "blessing" in this design--as there are NO "whistles", intermod, or overloading apparent on this radio's AM band reception! With the exception of a very few (and expensive) specialty receivers--the Model One provides the finest AM audio I have found in a mass-market radio. If your option for music lies on AM, you will be very pleased with this radio! My favorite feature is the very smooth 5:1 geared ANALOG rotary tuning. It's generally accurate, and the wide bandspread and variable-intensity tuning light make it a joy to use. Analog tuning is technically superior in EVERY respect to today's commonplace "digital" tuning. Inconvenient? Maybe ever so slightly, but worth the minimal effort.FINE PRODUCT... An easy FIVE-STAR recipient!

    3Great music. Poor voice
    By Tooner
I was looking for a radio that would look good on my kitchen counter and receive a variety of non-commercial FM radio stations. This radio does both very well. I bought the white/silver color and it looks good in the kitchen. Except for one small FM station, the reception has exceeded my expectations. The music sounds great. It's a little too "bassy", but with the volume turned up, the sound from one small single speaker radio is amazing and fills the room with a rich sound. I also like the fact that you can plug in a real antenna. My frustration is when someone is talking on the radio. In addition to music, I like to listen to news (mainly NPR) and sports. There is way too much bass when someone is speaking. As other reviewers have said, it would have been great to have a bass and treble control. So the bottom line for me is great for music and reception, but poor for someone speaking (news, talk radio and sports).

5Simple design. Great sound. Quality construction.
    By D. J. Stone
I'm sure there's lot of people like me would love to have a good sounding radio right on their desk, where it's easy to adjust the volume (when a phone call comes in), and be able to easily tune it to different stations as your mood suits.

I don't have the space for a big boom box, nor do I care to blast the sound real loud in my home office. I also don't need flashing lights, a graphic equalizer, or the numerous other features you seem to find on most other radios these days.

The Tivoli Audio Henry Kloss Model One table radio was exactly what I was looking for. It's unobtrusive on even a crowded desk like mine, yet it puts out sound that belies the small size. I also really liked the simplicity of design -- just three knobs (power, volume, and tuning) and a couple of indicator lamps (power on and signal strength). It has a retro look that's simple and very clean.

The FM tuning knob with 5:1 gear ratio allows you to really "ease into" a station, and a corresponding LED glows brightest when the signal is strongest. I actually find it to be easier to use than a digital tuner, and much more precise. I found that I didn't even miss not having presets. I've been able to tune in stations clearly with this radio that I cannot get on any other radio I own.

The speaker is small (3"), but puts out very clean sound, with a nice bass boost from the port in the bottom of the case.

The real hardwood case is a nice departure from the particle board and plastic that most electronic products are made from today.

The unit weighs about 4 lbs., and feels substantial in your hands when you hold it.

Do I wish it had a tone control? I don't miss it at all. The sound is so nicely balanced without it, and adding another knob would take away from it's simplicity of design and operation.

At around a hundred bucks, you can certainly pay less for a radio, but I think you'd have a tough time finding a unit that is so compact, simple, and great-sounding at any price. I'm planning on having this around for a long time.

I think a lot of young people may feel that this radio doesn't have enough bells and whistles, but I'll bet there's a lot of middle-aged businessmen like me that would love to receive this radio as a gift. I think it's something that would be truly appreciated, and used daily for many years. What more could you ask for for a hundred bucks?
