5perfect combination of high- and low-tech.
By Michael Goulish
I've used one of these for about 3 fill-ups now: about 36 hours of use. (I don't think it will ever be 16 hours on 1 gallon, but 12 is fine by me.)It's flawless. It smells a very little bit at start-up and shut-down, but while it's running it's essentially odorless. And perfectly quiet (a very soft gurgle once every ten minutes or so when it needs to sip some fuel into some internal tank) -- and it puts out a lot of heat.I have a room that's maybe 300 square feet with 5 big windows. On a cold night (close to 0 degrees F.) this thing can warm up that room by 2 or 3 degrees in 10 minutes, and maybe by 8 or 9 degrees in an hour. If you sit across the room and it's pointed straight at you, you can feel it right away.It easy to fill up. There's a cannister that you carry outside (garage) and fill from your kerosene container with a hand-powered siphon. Worked the first time. This may not work if your outdoor kerosene container is too low, but then you can just use a funnel. The cannister stands up nicely by itself for filling, on a level surface (like a garage floor). There's a little window on the cannister that lets you see when it's almost empty during use -- and when it's almost full during fill-up.When you want to turn it off, you press the "extinguish" button -- the big knob in the middle winds rapidly counterclockwise -- makes a loud noise -- and the flame usually goes out immediately. Sometimes it may gutter for 30 secs or so before completely going out.At start-up time the flame gutters a little for maybe 60 secs before the combustor starts to glow red, then the flame stabilizes and becomes perfectly quiet. You can't really see a flame except a little bit of blue -- maybe a quarter inch at the very top of the combustor. It's very easy to start up using the little battery starter device -- you just push a red button, hold it for a second, then slowly release. I've done maybe 20 starts so far on one pair of batteries. You can start it with a match instead if you want to (or have to.) But the battery-powered starter is nice. The back and the top and sides of the unit stay COOL TO THE TOUCH after an hour of use. Probably indefinitely. This gadget is an example of a perfect combination of high-tech (the way the combustion works) and low-tech (it's .... kerosene, after all.)There aren't many things this good. Cast iron pans, maybe? And ... um ... windmills that really work ? I don't know.I don't see how I could ask this thing to be any better.

5Good Heater!
By Kenneth Burritt
I've been using kerosene heaters for about 25 years now and really like them. I picked this unit up at a local Tru-Value because my old Kero Sun was malfunctioning. My first impression of this product is it's well put together. It looks well designed and feels solid. I prefer the square units over the round ones as the square units have removable fuel tanks and thus are more convenient to refuel. This unit also has a few nice touches like a little lip on the fuel tank handle which makes it a bit easier to remove. Another nice touch is a cover for the batteries. This is the first time I've seen this on a kerosene heater. This helps resist battery corrosion.I've used kerosene heaters for two purposes; to lower my heating bills and to have a backup source of heat during power outages. I use my main furnace to heat the house up to my desired temperature. I start the kerosene heater up at the same time and position it below a ceiling fan turning clockwise. Once the house is warmed up, the furnace cuts out and the kerosene heater keeps the house warm for the rest of the day. If your house is reasonably insulated, this should work for you as well. If it's really cold, like in the single digits or below, your furnace will kick on but a lot less frequently. I figure for every dollar I spend on kerosene I save three on my heating bill. I haven't had an energy bill over $200 and I have a 1700 square foot house. At this writing, kerosene is about $3.00 per gallon. Even leaving the unit on 16 hours a day, I spend about $60.00 per month on kerosene in the coldest months.Kerosene heaters do require regular maintenance. If you don't clean the wick, you could be harmed by fumes emitted by a dirty wick causing the fuel to not completely burn. It's very simple. It's called dry burning. Place the unit in a well ventilated place, preferably outside. Remove the tank and put the wick in the ignite position. Light the unit and let it run dry. Once the flame is out, take an old toothbrush and brush the burned carbon off the wick then thoroughly vacuum the unit. Then put a new tank of fuel in and you're done. If you perform this maintenance for every five gallons of kerosene used, which should be once a week, you'll be fine. The unit should be fully cleaned and serviced once a year by a professional or by you if you know what you're doing. For a little effort and common sense, you will save hundreds of dollars every heating season. The unit will pay for itself in just a few months.

5Fine heater
By Tim
I am going on my third season with this heater and it is serving me well. My parents always used a kerosene heater and now I use one myself. They are really great...don't let propaganists try to tell you they are "death traps." I have a 1200 sq ft row house built in 1949 and frequently use my kerosene heater all winter long to take some stress off my heating bill.It sounds like some of the other reviewers were not using the correct fuel. You should use UNDYED, clear 1-K Kerosene. Do not use kerosene that is dyed red (the IRS requires kerosene sold for certain purposes to be dyed). I tried this dyed kero once and it wreaked havok on my wick...the wick gets all gummed up with residue so it will no longer raise and retract after just a few gallons. This is just another way that the government screws up our lives. With the correct fuel, this heater produces beautiful, radiant heat. It is very cosy, and like having a little fireplace in the room. Cats and dogs love to sleep in front of it. You do have to be a little bit of a "hands on" person to manage a kerosene heater, but it is well worth the little amount of work.

5Replacement HEPA Filter
By Michela
Before ordering a replacement HEPA filter for your Honeywell (or other brand) Air Cleaner, be sure to check the model number on the unit. This filter is for four Enviracare Models (51500, 61500, 11520, and 17200). I replace my HEPA filter every year because I am very allergic to cigarette smoke, pollens, dust, molds, and other allergens and irritants. Honeywell suggests that you replace your HEPA filter every 1-3 years. Also, this HEPA filter has pre-filters which wrap around it, so you may want to order a box of those, too. Honeywell recommends that the pre-filters be changed every 3 months, but I've found if I vacuum them at least once a month, I can keep them longer. I really like my HEPA filters because they remove so much dust and pet hair from the air.

2Is there any way to be sure of what you're getting?
By affordabletech
Honeywell stopped making this model filter a number of years ago. Instead of a broad range of different size filters, they switched to a design that allowed for the sale of one filter size (height) that could be stacked with a gasket in between them. This made it simpler for retailers to stock filters that would fit lots of different models, and for consumers to find the filters as well.I'd prefer to use the original filter as it was designed for my air cleaner in the first place if it's still available for purchase. After a considerable amount of searching on the web, I found this listing on Amazon for a Honeywell branded filter, the same model that came with my air cleaner. Now, you might say "But I thought you said they stopped making it?" Well, that's true, but as with lots of discontinued products, sometimes new "old stock" inventory is available for many years after production stops. Savvy suppliers see the value in stocking up and selling the product for years to come.I thought I had stumbled onto just such a scenario with this product, offered for sale by an Amazon 3rd party seller, Allergy Be Gone. This company also sells the same filter on their own site, and on other marketplaces. In all the places they sell it, they represent it as a Honeywell brand product. From that representation you would expect that the product would come in a retail box, have a Honeywell part number or other designation on it, etc.I was disappointed to receive a generic brown shipping box, with a filter inside. No retail box. No evidence of it being a Honeywell part.It does fit the air cleaner. That's good. Is it the same quality as the OEM Honeywell filter? I have no idea. Is it even a HEPA class filter? No idea. When you buy a branded product, you're operating under the assumption that the company and brand behind the product wouldn't risk their business reputation by making a shoddy product, right? But can that assumption extend to a generic product made by ?, sold by a company that actively misrepresents the products they sell. No.So, what's this mean? Well, if I were interested in buying this filter again, I'd first avoid the seller "Allergy Be Gone". Prior to making my purchase, I'd contact the seller offering the product and ask a simple question: "Is the filter you're offering new "old stock" of a Honeywell branded product, or is it a generic filter that simply matches the size? Should I expect to get a generic "brown box" filter, or a retail box Honeywell product? It's possible that no one has this actual Honeywell filter any longer. In that case, the prospective buyer should be given accurate information as to it's manufacturing origins. To represent it as a Honeywell product is fraud. I might have still purchased this filter had it been represented as a generic replacement, as it should have been.

4Great service saved the day
By A Customer
I have had two problems with this card that may or may not affect others. I had an old version of Mapsource that did not recognize the 64MB cards. A call to customer service pointed me to a free update. I had difficulty with the card in my unit. The unit was acting very flaky. A call to Garmin customer service resulted in getting a in Warranty repair for an old unit. Some specific older units (the StreetPilot Colormap) do not properly handle cards with greater than 16MB capacities.

Why didn't I rate 5 stars? It take 4 hours to load the card over a serial link. The USB programmer is a bit pricy but would really make life much easier. I think for my needs I can get by without it. If you need program the card often you will want it for sure.

3The Jury is still out
By A Customer
I have an older streetpilot colormap. In order to be compatable with this card you have to make sure that you have updated firmware (just download it from Garmin), and a current copy of mapsource. Upgrades are available on Garmin's web site(mine was way old).It turns out that you can load more than 8 metroguide maps. You can have as many maps as space allows. Since they aren't all 8MB this is a real plus. My unit limits you to 50 maps, but you can get a lot of Roads and Recreation maps in since they vary from 64k to 400K. Garmin has very good phone support.

I am having issues with my card though. Depending on where I am in the map set the unit will hang and sometimes shut off while navigating a route. I might just have a defective card. I will find out how Amazon handles these issues soon.

Oh yes downloading nearly 64MB takes nearly four hours. The USB interface is looking very attractive (even if it is expensive).

3Needed More Memory
By E. Thompson
It is a LOT better than the original 8MB. When I got Metro Guide it needed way more memory.64MB is adequate for most trips.Too bad Garmin quit making the eMap. Then they always change things so that nothing is compatible.

5Emap GPS information highway!
By Sean Rubcic
The Garmin Emap is by far the best handheld unit I have owned, compared with other Garmin products I have owned i.e. GPS III GPS 45. These units are great, but the Emap goes a step further with its more road oriented features, for people who use GPS in there cars or motorcycles, like I do. When you are driving down the highway, and get the urge to eat or pee! just push a few buttons, And right on the screen pops the closest exit with bathrooms, vending machines, or Burgerking, hotels, and gas stations. Even tells you if the gas station has diesel fuel and propane, or RV & truck parking. The large backlite screen gives you decent detail, and is easy to read in any light, it's functions are menu driven, just highlight a function with the arrow key, and push enter, And you will be on the GPS information highway!

5Remarkably easy to use! Powerful and fun device!
By Kevin Pugh
I received the Garmin eMap Deluxe with Metro Guide as a Christmas present. I was somewhat worried that this would be one of those wonderful gadgets that only someone with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering could operate. However, much to my surprise it is very easy to operate. The wonderful thing about this particular GPS is that you can transfer an entire city map into the 8 Meg memory chip that comes with the package. Most cities will fit into the 8 Meg chip however larger chips are also available. (For instance the Atlanta Map is 7.48 Meg, however the New York City map is broken down into Northeast and Southwest portions equaling 14.788 Meg)

Let me cover some of the features of the Garmin eMap Deluxe. 1) Compass - while this GPS does not have a compass per se, it does have a mechanism that will tell you what direction you are traveling in. This is very helpful and very cool, however you cannot stand in one particular place and know which direction you are facing.

2) Speed - this feature will give you your average speed in real-time. While driving down the road I looked down and it was updating my speed once ever second. No exaggeration! I couldn't believe how fast it was responding. This GPS also remembers the details concerning your speed in the "Trip Computer", you can find your Moving (Speed) Average, Overall (Speed) Average, as well as your Maximum Speed.

3) Trip Distance - since it knows how fast you are going it also displays your "Trip Distance". It is amazingly accurate and matches my car's odometer perfectly.

4) Time - there is also a built in clock that keeps exact time through what I can only assume is the satellite(s).

5) Find - by pressing this button you can find "waypoints" (self programmed through your computer), "cities", "exits", "points of interest", "addresses", and "intersections". This is very cool. You can easily find anything from the nearest gas station (or if you're picky the nearest Chevron or BP) to the nearest McDonald's. I particularly enjoy the "address" option that lets you type in an address (must have that city currently in memory) and it shows you the destination on the display. However, this GPS does not have the ability to route you to a destination. (by route I mean, turn left on Main Street, travel 1.4 miles, and turn right on, yada, yada, yada) Although if you program the desired route into your computer you can transfer it to your GPS and then follow the route. Even still, it does not tell you when to turn. It is your responsibility to keep up with the path.

6) GPS Info - another cool feature that will tell you your current location (N 33.27.000, W085.54.231), your elevation above sea level, your speed, the accuracy (i.e. margin of error is 19.3 feet, etc), as well as what particular satellites you are receiving from (right now five satellites are conglomerating to give me my current position).

7) Sun and Moon - a trivial feature that tells you the current date, time, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset.

8) Zoom - the main screen allows you to zoom from a range of 120 feet all the way to 800 miles.

I originally thought that this would be more trouble than help. However after playing with the GPS for less than two days I have virtually mastered it. Listed above are only a few of the features of the Garmin eMap Deluxe with Metro Guide. Also, I would highly recommend purchasing the cigarette adapter for your car since you can burn a pair of AA batteries in a day. However, don't worry about this too much, this GPS was designed for traveling in the car so batteries don't burn out as fast as you might think. I believe that if you are in the market for a GPS it would be more than worth the extra money to get this model over a cheaper version that cannot provide you with near the information or features that this one will.

5GREAT PRODUCT
By E. Karpinski
I was given the eMap Deluxe in December, as a gift. Since then I've been using it almost everyday. The unit works great! The base map installed in the unit will get you around, but does not show local streets. After downloading information from the Mapsource Metroguide, it was great to see all the local streets on the map. I found the "show next street" feature to be really useful, especially at night. When driving , I put some velcro on the bottom of the unit and stood it up on the dashboard against the windshield. It remained there nicely without falling off, and picked up the sattelite signals easily. I've taken some car trips with the unit, and it woked perfectly. Metroguide gives you lots of information you may need about the Interstate Exits as you drive. For example, if you are looking for a certain kind of gas station, you can find it along the way. I've used it on a plane while traveling. It was fascinating to look down on the ground and see a river or small town and be able to tell it's name. Also you can tell when crossing from one state to the next. It gave the speed of the plane as well as the altitude. The trip computer gives you average speed, total time of the trip, stopped time, moving time and more. Overall I am very happy with the performance of the unit, but there are some things I am not crazy about. 1. The 8 meg chip that comes with the unit doesn't hold that much information. I live on Long Island, and the county I live in borders New York City, so 8 megs of data covers a small area of the city and Long Island. I had to buy the 16 meg chip, and still cannot get all of NYC and all of Long Island. If you live in a suburban area maybe the 8 megs will work for you. 2. The unit goes through batteries very quickly. I tried to conserve them as much as possible, but finally bought a cigarette lighter adapter for the unit. 3. I found that in congested areas, where the distance between streets are short, sometimes the unit can't pick up the sattelite signals fast enough. You could pass a street without it showing as a "next street". 4. The Metroguide maps seem to be dated. I was recently in Arizona, and some of the local streets that I know have been there for at least the last three years were not on the map. In all I recommend this unit if you are interested in a quality GPS to use while traveling. Because this is my first GPS, I can't compare it with any other units. I am curious though about how it compares with the GPS III +. I'd like to know how the two units differ and if one is better than the other. But this one is a good bet.

5Love my little braun epil
By A Customer
So yes, it does smart -- especially the first couple of times you do it. However, it doesn't hurt anymore, just feels like a tingly prickly sensation -- like after your foot falls asleep. The instruction manual recommends using the silk-epil after bathing, and I have found that to be helpful. You are just very relaxed after a hot bath or shower, and then voila! -- your shaving is done for the week!

You should use a loofah or something similar too -- it helps guard against ingrown hairs.

4Works well - just get over the intitial shock...
By A Customer
I have used this for over 2 years. It removes each hair at the root. I only really have to use it 1x weekly or longer in between. The hair grows in softer and thinner.I recommend it to someone who does waxing today. It is much less expensive that that and you are already used to the initial shock/pain.I can do some private areas, arm pits, & legs.It is a good investment even if it only saves you from 2 or 3 whole leg and bikini waxings!

4hair
By A Customer
This product works really well on leg hair, but it does get painful since hair is being pulled out. I like it because it will work with only a few days worth of hair growth. When I use it on my arms, some of the hair seems to break off instead of being pulled out so that part grows back rather quickly. I can see areas on my legs where hair doesn't grow any more and it's thanks to this epilator. The annoying thing about epilators is they can only do a small section at a time while with waxing you get to remove larger strips at one go. It draws out the pain. All in all I would recommend this product. It does a good job removing hair, but seems to work better on thick hair than fine hair.

1mickey mouse pancaker
By Diane K. Creel
This is advertised as a waffle maker, but it is not. There is not a ridge or waffle involved. It is a pancake form of Mickey Mouse. The old version which was discontinued was a waffler, and photo they use shows the waffle that the previous item produced. The new Mickey Mouse Waffler would not show up well since there is no depth to the facial features, and there is only a hint of an outline of the face of Mickey Mouse. If you truly want a waffle maker this is not one.

5Worth it
By EH
This product is a lot of fun.

A bell would be nice to tell you when it's done but no big deal. Shouldn't be walking out of the kitchen with something like this on anyway. You do hear a click when the light turns on.

We use a large water bottle to dispense the batter. That way you can squeeze it out of a small opening and distribute it evenly.

I used this waffle iron for my son's birthday. Not only does it make the cutest waffles, but they're perfectly done every time, and it's unbelievably easy to clean. With the red ready-light, there's no guess work. The handle stays cool, but the rest of the iron doesn't, so be sure to keep curious little hands away!

5Good receiver for the money
By John S. Shin
This receiver definitely is a great addition to any home theatre system. For it's cost, I don't think you can find a better receiver. It produces clean, crisp sounds and can be installed with ease. It's simplicity and usability makes it a great receiver if you are looking to receive the most bang for your buck.

I will have to say, though, that this receiver does lack some options. It only has two DSP modes, no s-video jacks, limited a/v inputs (if you have numerous devices), par bass management, and a small front panel screen. In addition, even with the Dynamic Range control, this receiver works best when played at high volumes. I have had some difficulty producing quality sounds at low volumes.

This is a very well built receiver that takes into account that most people will not fuss over the options that I listed. For it's price, who can complain, and realistically, nobody should. I am very pleased with its performance and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend over...

4Good machine, Bad interface
By Andrea H. Johnson
This reciever works very well. It makes my speakers sound pretty good, and it was not very hard to set up (considering the complexity of my sound system.) My only problem with it was its tiny screen. The screen just dosn't give enough information, and therefor I had to use the instructions a lot while I was learning how to use it. It is a very good value for the money.
