4Good Solid 3/8" Drill
By Gaetano Albani
This is a great drill to have in your arsenal, especially when your cordless drill farts out on the job, and you don't want to pull out the big 1/2" hammer drill for light to medium duty drilling and driving tasks. I'd give it 5 stars, but the placement of the trigger lock is not well designed. I have inadvertantly engaged it a few times while in the middle of a drilling task and even while driving screws.

5I like drill motors.
By Eric E. Barkley
Being retired I have decided that having a battery operated drill motor is not that important anymore. Over the years I have had at least 5 different drills that have needed new batteries replacements. I was at a place to order another battery pack for my Panasonic EY6432, the 15.6V, 3.5aH ones. As the battery packs are almost more expensive than a new drill, I decided to purchase this Hitachi D10VG 9 Amp, with the 3/8" chuck, 0-1200rpm, to quit being tied to the need for a new battery pack. I have at least 400 feet of heavy duty (12 & 14AWG) extension cords so there is no place I can't use a 120vac drill motor. I chose this one because of the low speed and the heavy amperage which means I can use it for a screwdriver. I have the Hitachi D13VF, 0-850rpm ½ drill motor too, but is quite heavy, so that is why I got the 3/8 chuck, this lighter unit. My Milwaukee H-D Magnum drill motor is too fast, 0-2800 and there have also been times I have had to use channel-lock pliers to open the keyless chuck. No more keyless chucks. I have 7, 120vac drills, which includes my floor drill press and a Proxxon pro rotary tool, a DeWalt screw gun that is too fast for driving screws, and a Bosch rotor hammer drill. Being an electrician I guess I like drill motors? This Hitachi D10VG drill motor I use in my woodworking.

5Good Overall WW'ing Drill
By Gregory S Brown
Likes: Padded Grip, Metal Gear Box, Easy Access Trigger Lock, Easy Access Reverse, OK Balance, Keyed Chuck (which is what I wanted.), Good Ergonomics, Easy Speed Control with Trigger, Lots of Power.

Diskiles: Doesn't come with an extra hand grip. No problem though--the grip on my Bosch 4.5" grinder fit just fine (must be a stanardized thread pattern).

I was going for the Milwaukee, but I really liked the feel of Hitachi in my hand and the top of the trigger doesn't cut into your finger as it does on the Milwaukee.

I am very satisifed with this purchase.

4This is the kind of drill your Grandfather would buy.
By H. Johnson
This is a great drill, tons of power and a fast 3,000 rpm. No, this is not the same drill they sell at Lowe's. We use these in production, drilling hole after hole, never a problem or hesitation. This drill also has a great power to RPM ratio (9 amp/ 3,000 RPM) I can't find another drill, that comes close. I also needed the keyed chuck and it to be corded as these are used for extended periods. Battery units do not last long enough and keyless chucks eventually break. Very nice package.

4This is a good drill
By Scott Pointon
I too picked this drill up at Lowe's for a very good price. I don't know if it was mismarked or what, but I only paid $49.99 for this Hitachi D10VF, while Amazon (and everyone else) is asking way more than that!As for the drill, it is very powerful and has a great chuck. With this much torque, there is no way anything but a good keyed chuck would work - and this one fits the bill. The handle is plastic but the gear box is metal. Overall this tool just feels like good quality and it has performed well on every job I have used it on. Drilling concrete, wood, steel are no problem for this baby.As for downsides, I feel that this drill is well worth the 50 bucks I paid for it, but I would be a little less enthused if I paid $100. Also, the side handle is not included and I cannot seem to find it for sale anywhere on the web. This is the third Hitachi tool I own and I think they need to work on their parts and accessories availability.Overall, this is a very good performer and if you shop around it can be had at a very good price.

4Now this is a heater!
By E. Smith
The triple burner Mr. Heater works wonderfully! Now this is what you call a radiant heater! Prior to purchasing Mr. Heater I was using a Bernzomatic patio heater (that cost significantly more) that didn't heat very well - I had to practically hug the Bernzomatic to feel heat. The triple burner Mr. Heater keeps me toasty warm! I love the red glow it gives off too! I installed Mr. Heater on a 40 lb. propane tank - this is just the right height to keep me warm while on my deck swing.Mr. Heater isn't a particularly stylish unit - however, it sure does heat well!I have a few minor criticisms; overall I'm very happy -During my first week using Mr. Heater the burners kept shutting off - they would not stay lit for very long. I adjusted the thermocouples to position them closer to the burner and I haven't had a problem since.Mr. Heater doesn't work very well in wind - it works fine in a breeze or a little bit of wind. I tried to use it on my deck in a storm with fairly gusty winds - not a good idea. The wind tended to cause the burner to ignite the chamber that carries the gas to the burner. If this happens - you'll know it.It'd be really nice to have an electric ignition! The two burner model has this; however I really wanted a maximum amount of heat - I wanted the three burners. It'd be really nice if the propane tank mounting hardware was adjustable for height. If I mounted Mr. Heater on a 20 lb. propane tank it'd simply be too short to set next my patio table or swing. If you could adjust the height a couple of feet that'd be nice - you can probably jerry rig something.Overall, it heats great - an excellent value too, in relation to the cost of patio heaters (which is what I use this for).******* 2//2010 Update *******While it's been a great product the last couple years, another issue has become evident. Mr. Heater is not rust resistant! It's rusted to the point that I can't use it anymore. I kept it in an enclosed screened in porch so it was never exposed directly to rain. However, rain that was blown in and the summer humidity has had a big impact. I've replaced Mr. Heater with another manufacture's version that doesn't rust.

4Does a very good job
By Plainsman
I've had my triple Mr. Heater for one full winter (0 to 30 degree nights/days in Kansas). It does a nice job of heating my two-car garage, even with the double wide door being opened periodically. My only complaints are that one of the burners occasionally goes out (but is easily relit) and it "sings" once in a while as it heats up. Apparently the difference in metal expansion as the three burners are lit individually and warm up at a slightly different rate, causes some kind of harmonic and it "sings" until everything has warmed up completely. No big deal. If ya wanna get warm fast, this is the heater for you.

4Got Heat
By jj
I use this in my shop which is not well insulated. It takes the bitter cold off and gives a warming location. Nice that you can run 1,2, or 3 burners on low, medium, or high for a variety of heat levels. Nice and solid mount on the bbq tank. Burns through the tank about as advertised, maybe 10 - 12 (guessing from limited use) hours or so on the high setting with all 3 burners on, scale down from there with the lower settings or less burners. The only negative I see is that once you start more than one burner, and want to go to a lower number of burners running, you have to shut the whole thing down and let it cool and then light the burner(s) you want. Frankly this doesn't happen to me as I need all 3 all the time for now.

5Great Product
By Daniel J. Gilley
This heater is excellent and the perfect fit, for a certain set of requirements.

If you have electricity, use an electric heater. Don't bother with the hassel of propane. The cost isn't too different and the hassel factor is much higher than electricity.

I also don't recommend using the small canisters. That's an inconvinient way to go as well.

BUT. If you don't have power and need a cheap, safe heat source that you can run while you sleep, this is the best one made. Buy the 12' hose, place a 20lb propane tank outside, and run this heater all night with just a small crack in a window or door (just in case!). You will get > 100 hours of heat out of a tank of propane! Less than a buck to run it all night.

Highly recommended under the right circumstances.

4Use some preventive maintenance measures....
By Just Like Gizmos
I use this heater when I camp in my trailer, and it works great especially when used in conjunction with a 20-lb. propane tank. If you do use a 20-lb. tank, however, I STRONGLY recommend that you use the fuel filter (around $10 and yes, this is mentioned in the manual) and also that you always close the propane tank shut-off before turning off the Portable Buddy so that all the gas is burned out. Why? I went through two units that started shutting themselves off about a year after purchase before I found out that oily residue starts building up within the heater when the previous two suggestions are not followed. Even when I tried cleaning it out (I did a complete disassembly), it was not successful unless the control unit and the regulator are replaced as well. I did find a lot of oily mess within contol unit area, but couldn't get it all so it's just as easy to replace the entire unit. What happens is that when you turn on the unit, it seems to work; but, as the oily residue works its way up to the flame part, it will start going out on its own - the time it takes to go out in my experience was around 1/2 hour. As far as the precautions go, the fuel filter was easy for me to find locally where propane items are sold (farm stores, large sporting goods stores); it is easy to install (it screws into the heater where a 1-lb. bottle would be located and then the hose to the tank screws right into the fuel filter - it should last a year). I pick up an extra one once the current one is being used. I'm getting in the habit of shutting off the gas first. I would give this heater 5 stars if they would have explained this malfunction better - I ended up talking with tech support before finding out what was actually wrong. Also, even in very cold weather, I leave about 6" of window open to keep the condensation to a minimum.

5The purpose of the fuel filter....
By M. Hiltabidel
Once and for all, here is the purpose of fuel filter for this heater. When you use this heater with a remote tank & rubber hose, it is imperative that you always shut the tank off first & let the heater run until it burns off all the fuel in the lines. YOU MUST DO THIS EVERY TIME. If you simply turn the heater knob to the off position, what you are doing is trapping 100 PSI of propane in the rubber hose. When high pressure propane just sits in your rubber hose, it literally causes the rubber to leetch a light oil that is part of the chemical composition of the rubber. If this oil forms and you have the filter on the heater, the filter will catch it and seperate it from the gas. If you do not have the filter, the oil will quickly work its way into the heater & destroy both the regulator & control valve. The heater can be repaired, but these two components will need to be replaced.

5Outstanding wide angle zoom!
By Systems_Consultant
This lens is widely held to be one of the best if not the best wide angle professional zoom lens for 35mm and Digital SLRs compatible with Nikon's lens system. I've had mine for about 6 months on a Nikon D-100 and have absolutely nothing I don't like about it. It's sharp from corner to corner at all zoom settings and any pincusion destortion is negligible even at 17mm @ f2.8. The AFS focusing motor is lightning fast and accurate. Filter size is 77mm, same as my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR lens. Since filters this size aren't cheap, it's nice to be able to share. This lens will support 35mm, APS, and DX format film and digital sensor sizes and comes with a 5-year warranty. If you want the best, and can afford it, you won't be sorry you purchased this lens.

5A superb wide-angle lens for full-frame (FX) Nikon digital cameras
By 320Flyer
I purchased this lens along with my D700 nearly 12 months ago. My choice was between this lens and the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S. I went with the 17-35mm for the ability to use filters and have not looked back.During that time I have had a blast enjoying landscape photography with the combination. The lens is exceedingly sharp --corner to corner-- particularly when stopped down from wide open. I have no use for 'prime' lenses within this focal range anymore.Indoors the extreme angle-of-view and large aperture have been great for candids and other interior shots. Obviously, 17-35mm is not a desirable focal length for portraits. Some have complained about corner 'sharpness' wide open, but the depth-of-field at f/2.8 is so shallow on FX that corner sharpness is a non-issue since objects in the corner are unlikely to be within the focal plane of the subject anyway. With the high-ISO performance of the D700, aperture selection is an artistic choice for DOF, not a necessity for low light. Stop the pixel-peeping and just enjoy the lens!I have also found DxO Optics Pro (Elite) a priceless software tool with this camera/lens combination. I always shoot RAW images and use DxO to convert to TIFF or jpg. DxO includes both the D700 and this lens in their database; the result: noise-free images with perfect optical corrections. Amazing.

5First Class Glass
By Fred Stevens
This is a first-class professional quality lens. I am using it on Nikon F5, F100, D200, D700 and D800E bodies. I bought it in anticipation of purchasing an FX digital format successor to the D200/D300 DX-format cameras. It is extremely sharp from edge-to-edge, rendering crisp images with great color and contrast. Good low-light performance for natural people-pictures. On both my film-based and digital shoots, it is nothing short of spectacular. This lens is considered both heavy and pricey by some. However, I find the weight promotes better stability with hand-held images. The price is right for what you get. I also like a depth of field indicator on the aperature ring for doing wide-ange shots employing hyper-focal distance techniques. You don't get this with the newer G-series lenses. If you can afford this lens and are going to go FX-format, buy it.

5Terrific but pricey hand-holdable tele zoom
By Douglas A. Greenberg
Many photographers who purchase telephoto lenses wind up disappointed in their lenses' performance; they achieve subpar results and then swear that the lens is "not sharp." Some lenses indeed might not be optically outstanding, but even in these cases the major cause of soft images, particularly when camera and lens are handheld, is camera/lens shake. People routinely try to take highly magnified photos at shutter speeds that are simply too slow.Nikon has come up with a (partial) solution to this problem through its innovative "vibration reduction" series of lenses. These optics are designed to compensate, at least partially, for the camera shake/movement that is inevitable when a lens is hand-held. According to Nikon, the VR mechanism adds two or more "stops" worth of steadiness, meaning that a 400mm. lens that previously might be adequately handheld at 1/500 second now will (often) produce good results at 1/125. Out in the field this can make the difference between a successful photo outing and a frustrating one.Does this technology work, and is this 80-400mm. lens a good product overall? To both questions I offer a qualified "yes." As long as one realizes that VR is not magic and has definite limitations, this feature is definitely worth paying some extra money for, particularly if one's photographic style prevents the regular and disciplined use of a tripod. The other thing about VR to keep in mind is that since camera shake itself is variable, it's a good idea always to take multiple photos to ensure that at least one of them is optimally sharp (a slow-mo record of how much one 'vibrates' while holding a camera would reveal that from instant to instant there is considerable variation). But what about this lens' performance overall? There definitely are some drawbacks and compromises of which potential buyers should be aware. The lens is fairly heavy, and since it utilizes what is now an "old-fashioned" screw-drive AF mechanism, autofocus can seem very slow and noisy. It would be nice if someday Nikon replaced this version of the lens with an AF-S model, but there apparently is no current plan to do this. To minimize the maddeningly slow "searching" that a slow AF lens can exhibit, Nikon has included a "focus limit" switch. This makes it possible to cut the focus range in half, essentially. If one is taking pictures that are all at a distance or are all reasonably close-up, setting the switch to "limit" will restrict the lens' focusing range, allowing proper focus to be achieved more quickly.Another drawback is that the removable tripod mount that comes with the lens is simply not very good. Photographers intending to use the lens on a tripod regularly are advised to purchase a third party mount such as that offered by Kirk Enterprises.Optically, the lens is actually quite remarkable. This is a 5:1 tele zoom, and one would think that given the "jack of all trades" nature of such a beast there would be severe optical compromises. Not so. As with just about all lenses, there is a slight loss of sharpness at full aperture, but once the lens is stopped down even one stop, sharpness at all focal lengths is quite satisfactory. As a bird photographer, I use my lens mainly at 400mm. As compared to my older, manual focus 400mm. Nikkors, the 80-400mm. is not quite as sharp and contrasty, but in practical terms the differences are truly minimal. This lens produces fine images exhibiting good contrast and excellent color rendition. Optically, it's a winner. One caveat: because this is a complex zoom built from a large number of optical elements, it does NOT perform particularly well with teleconverters. With certain 1.4x teleconverters such as those in the Kenko Teleplus Pro line, the lens actually will still autofocus (even more slowly, however) and the VR mechanism works, sort of. But there is a notable deterioration of sharpness. With a 2x teleconverter, there is no AF, no VR, and even further reduced sharpness. If working with teleconverters is something you are counting on, stick to a single focal length tele.Overall, however, for photographers bent on getting sharp photos at longer focal lengths hand-held, this is a fine lens to try and buy. For walkaround bird photographers like myself, it's nearly ideal. It's very likely that in a few years this early version of a VR lens will seem antiquated and quaint. For now, however, it represents a very good investment for Nikon users.

3You love it you hate it (updated)
By Martin R. Manning
This is the absolutely best lens I have ever used but it can also be the most frustrating. After 6 months, with this lens on my D70 most of the time, I have hundreds of magnificent bird and animal photographs including hand held shots in fading light with an effective 35mm focal length of 600mm at f5.6 and 1/100 sec that are razor sharp thanks to vibration reduction. A bonus is that the magnification outweighs the longer focusing distance and you can actually get great close-ups of butterflies etc. As far as I can see you are never going to be able to fault the optics with a 6 Mpixel sensor. The VR technology gives you 2 stops most of the time and 3 stops enough of the time to be always worth a go. But there is a big cautionary tale. The focusing on this lens is slow! It can also get confused and seemingly refuse to focus for no good reason. (You have to refocus on something totally different and then switch back to your subject hoping it is still there!) I have lost a lot of shots while the focus motor is whirring backwards and forwards and then cursed the lens until I see the next really great shot and all is forgiven. It took me about 3 months and 1000 shots to get really familiar with the lens and the shooting techniques needed. On the D70 I generally push the ISO speed up to 400 when I mount the lens to compensate for the narrower f-stop range and I switch to central spot focus to get the best chance of controlling the slow focus problem. For the sort of subjects I like, aperture priority is usually the best approach - sometimes switching to full manual when there is time to set things up. Manual focus is always an option but the D70's "eyes" are sharper than mine so persisting with auto focus remains my preference. I use the focus limit option switch a lot and I leave the full VR option on nearly all the time. With my other lenses I generally keep about 1/3 of the shots I take, with this lens the ratio drops to about 1/4 or 1/5 but stick a big CF card in your Nikon and just take everything many times. This lens has revolutionized my photography and I love it much more than hate it.POSTSCRIPT: This lens just got a bit better. I spent my kids' inheritance and bought a D200 which now improves the focusing issue. While the basic lens focus speed remains slow, the D200 is obviously quite a bit smarter at homing in on the right focus and hunts backwards and forwards less often than the D70, particularly in low light conditions. I still miss some shots due to slow focusing but definitely less often with the D200 than with the D70.

5Great lens as long as you understand the limitations.
By R. D. Smith
This is a great lens and takes simply amazing pictures. The results are much better than what you will get with the "plain" 70-300 telephoto lens. That being said, there are a few things to consider.1) the lens is expensive. It cost more than my D70 did...2) the lens is HEAVY. When lugging this baby around, you know *something* is in that camera bag...3) the focus is SLOW, particularly compared to the 70-300.However, using the tripod mount as a "handle" (an awkward but effective use of the mounting bracket), I got some shots that simply blew me away given the amount of perceived camera shake. I do not have very steady hands (particularly with something so heavy) so the VR feature is invaluable.I would recommend this lens, but don't throw away your 70-300 just yet...
