Weighing a mere 17 oz. the 8x25 IS Binoculars are the smallest and lightest IS binoculars to date. Combining Canon's newly developed Tilt-System Image Stabilizer technology with a rounded shape for greater comfort and non-slip holding, the 8x25 IS binoculars are perfect for any setting. Whether watching your favorite team at the local stadium, or taking a closer look at the natural world around you the 8x25 IS binoculars are a perfect choice.

4You can't pound tent pegs with them.
    By Ross A. Brunetti
They are, and they aren't, great binocs

What they are: as it says, the lightest and least expensive IS binoculars on the market (right now). The optics themselves are only merely very good, but - HAND HELD - with the IS activated, they allow me to read fine print about 20% closer than with my Leica 8x32 Ultras. On a rest, the Leicas are superior. It's the elimination of the jiggles - the 8x25 Canons don't give an image that's as bright and contrasty as those high dollar Leicas, but the steadier image more than makes up for that.

What they aren't: waterproof or armored. So have a care if you use them in conditions of rain or dust. They're much more complicated than simple binocs, with electric circuits inside, and the matter of reliability does come into consideration - but in the first year, they've survived life in the tote bag ,bouncing along dirt roads without a hiccup. Two more things: besides armoring and ruggedizing, Canon had to compromise _somewhere_ to make them this small. So, while the IS deals well with rapid human shaking. it doesn't seem to correct at all for slow motions. I imagine the engineers were forcd to leave off the sensors for slow motions, to fit everything else in. And, they use CR123 batteries, more expensive and harder to find in a pinch than AA batteries. Of course, if the batteries run dead, all your are left with is a functional set of very good, if a bit bulky, 8x25 binocs. What Canon has created is $300 binoculars that - hand held, with the IS active - outperform my high dollar Leica 8x32 Ultras. And, I imagine, the Nikon SE's, too. No kidding.

4A good binocular for light use
    By RT "Gadget Guy"
I bought these binoculars because I was just a bit frustrated with using regular binoculars. I already have a set of weatherproof Minolta binocs that cost about $200, but wasn't finding it useful because the effort required to hold it steady enough to see detail just made it fatiguing to use for any length of timeSeeing as I've had great success with Image Stabilization in SLR lens, and my point and shoot, I thought I would give this Canon a tryI like it. It's quite light for its size, and compact enough that I don't feel burdened to bring this with me for any kind of event short of a long hike up a large mountain. It does take a CR123 battery which is kind of expensive if you buy them at a department store. You should try to find them online. Many high end flashlights use this type of battery, and they are available for around $2 online. Surefire (a top flashlight brand) batteries are what I recommend and use everywhere (in my flashlights and cameras). These kinds of batteries have a long shelf life so it's no problem to buy a few extraThe main reason for this binocular is the stabilization. In reality, the Image Stabilization is actually quite subtle. You still have to do your best still to keep the binocs steady, but the stabilization adds a just bit extra steadiness to the image, enough to make a difference you can notice. You have to keep the button at the top of the device pressed with your finger...it turns off as soon as you let go of the button. All in all, the IS works well for the natural minute shakiness of your hand but larger movements are not compensated for as you would expect. So don't expect the image to be steady if you are trying to spot animals from inside a car. If you deliberately move the binoculars side to side, you can see the mechanism doing its work as it floats and then hits its limits. The drawbacks...- the eye relief is only 13.5 mm...so it's not really suitable for eyeglass wearers. I find an eye relief of 16mm minimum to be very usable with eyeglasses.- uses harder to find CR123A batteries.- the device isn't water resistant, so you have to keep this thing completely dry- Image Stabilization effect is quite bit more sutble than you might expect, but it's definitely effective enough to be noticeably more steady than a normal binocularI think the future of binoculars is definitely IS. I see that Canon has a version 2 of their IS in a more expensive model, so maybe the action of the IS is improved and may be added to this model in the future. If you are a casual user who just wants an effective binocular, this is a great one to choose. Canon makes higher grades and higher magnifications for the more serious user.

5Viewing Power per Dollar - Second to None!
    By Fredric Pierce
I have to give these binoculars 5 stars, not because they are the finest optics money can buy, but because they give the clearest and steadiest handheld viewing you can get at anywhere near this price. Value for the money is the point, here. But, besides value, they actually are very good quality optics! They feel well made. Although they are mostly plastic, it's good quality material, they don't feel cheesy. No, they are not built like a Leica tank (intended to survive an atomic blast), but the image stabilization is so amazing, I am willing to be a little extra careful with them. You look through them and press that button, and, PRESTO, the view just stops jiggling! It's just fantastic! The I.S. has greatly improved my stargazing pleasure. Maybe I have especially bad hand tremor, but I would bet anybody would notice a big difference. I really love them!!

    5Good news, everyone!
    By Splatt
Good news, everyone! Bender is here, complete with a stogie, can of oil, and shiny metal posterior.Nothing educational here, but let's face it: we like Bender for his dry, sarcastic wit, not for his educational value. His quality is good. He seems pretty solidly built out of nickel-plated metal (probably not 40% titanium like the real Bender, though), but remember what you're buying here. The package clearly states that he is a "tin toy collectible", "for ages 13 and up". He is definitely not for young children: I doubt he's able to withstand the stresses that playing with a child would subject him to. Also, Bender has the sense not to swallow his cigar or oil can -- a young child probably doesn't. Please note that the antenna, eyes, shoulders, and hands are plastic.Twist the antenna and his expression changes from normal to angry. His eyes can be moved up and down. And if you wind him up, his arms and legs move and he "walks" across the desk. Unfortunately, mine seems to have some trouble with the "walking" part (he tends to go in circles). But this doesn't really bother me because I didn't buy him for the toy value; I bought him because I wanted a 9-inch tall Bender on my desk.

Bender is really cool and makes a great desk toy...the only problem was that his cigar was not in the package. He did have his beer can, but how can you expect him to drink beer without a cigar?

    5Great introduction to robotics
    By Zossima
The Lego Spybotics line is an easier and lower-priced introduction to robotics than the Lego Mindstorms series.

ABOUT SPYBOTICS PRODUCTSSpybotics contains four robots (so far). Each is designed to be strong in only one or two of the categories of speed, strength, and agility. That means that the user will have to learn how to capitalize on the vehicles strengths in a competition with other Spybotics vehicles.* Shadowstrike is a vehicle that scores high on speed and agility* Gigamesh scores highest on strength, but low on other* Technojaw is probably the most balanced, scoring quite high on speed but well on strength and agility* Snaptrax scores high on agility and strength

COMPARISON TO MINDSTORMSThere are several key differences with Mindstorms:* Mindstorms is far more programmable; there are even artificial intelligence algorithms available for Mindstorms so that the Mindstorms robot can learn* Mindstorms has more components that can be controlled: The program doesn't just control wheels; it can control gears and infrared sensors, etc.* Spybotics is like a smart remote control car, but not really a robot; it is also geared toward playing competitive games when a friend has another Spybotics vehicle* Unlike Mindstorms, but like most other Lego kits, you can only bid 2-3 different vehicles with the Spybotics kit

Because of its greater programmability (you could actually write your own operating system for it), Mindstorms costs a lot more.

PURCHASING RECOMMENDATIONI think this is a great product. If I was purchasing for an adult, though, I'd buy Mindstorms--which is used in college robotics classes. But, ANY OF THE SPYBOTICS PRODUCTS ARE A GREAT FIRST ROBOTICS EXPERIENCE FOR A CHILD.

    5Very Cool
    By A Customer
Bought this for my brother, who just turned 12. He loves it! It was fun for him to put together and loves the idea that you can program missions into it. The down side is you have to go to the website to get the instructions to put it together. You can't print them, so he had to sit in the family office and put it together, which wasn't as easy. However, now that it's together he loves running it around the house. It's like a remote control car made of legos! He hasn't put it down since. This toy is great for young boys (even older boys, my fiance helped my brother put it together and they had to wrestle eachother to play with it) and provides them with hours of entertainment. I would recommend it for children over 8 or 9 because it does require a little inginuity to put everything together. All in all, fun for the family. My mom and I even got to play with it!

5My son loves this toy and I love Legos!!!
    By A Customer
We were disconcerted by the lack of printed instructions but a quick glance at lego's web site told us the instructions were on the CD. Running XP we had no problem installing the software. My 9 year old son who has put together a lot of complex lego projects had no trouble putting this together, too. Then he followed the on screen instructions and it worked like a charm. A couple of false starts in running missions were solved when he retraced his steps and saw what he had missed. I watched him do all this while I was busy with some other work. I was ready to step in and help if needed but that was completely unnecessary.I also bought a spybotics book on amazon which I look forward to reading. Maybe we can expand the frontiers of what the spybot can do.

BTW, we also the movie maker kit from Lego and had some trouble with its software but got email answers from customer support within 24 hours on the day after Christmas!

    5Great Wireless Card
    By L. Quiroz
I just purchased a laptop and an IPAQ Pocket PC and I used this card for both. I just pull the card from on and plug it in the other. The set up was as easy as 1.2.3. very easy, no issues with manuals or long instructions. I don't recall needing the instructions for more than a minute or so. Very easy to install and very practical... especially for my needs.

    I'll give it a 5 *****

3Not a typical JET experience for me
    By Herbert C. Knowlton
I had to return the first extension received as there was no way to "tweak" it satisfactorily. Second extension arrived a few days ago and is better, but still a problem to align with the lathe bed. I have spend a few hours trying to make it work smoothly, and have made progress, but this is frustrating.I love the mini lathe, but the extension is not 100%. If you think you will ever want a longer bed than the 14" the Jet mini has, purchase on that comes that way.

5This extension allows for longer projects, adds weight
    By David Swanson
I bought this little lathe with the extension with the idea of saving some money since all I wanted to do is turn spindle legs.I actually got it free with my lathe purchase. It fit fine, was easy to install and adds some heft which is always helpful to reduce vibration.

    5quality problems corrected
    By Sharon
Looks as if the earlier problems with hole alignment have been corrected. This one went onto the jet vs mini with no alignment problems or needs to shim or shave. Works as advertised. Installation was just tightining two bolts setting the heigth of a mounting plate and leveling with the included feet.

    5Well worth the cost...
    By KRASSEL
We recently added this base to our Jet Mini Lathe. As with most jet products the fit and finish was excellent. Went together without any problems, including the extension. It is very solid, and does not add any vibration to the operation of the lathe. I built a shelf to go on the crossbar and we use it to store extra chucks and other misc items we typically use. I also tacked a couple pieces of angle iron to the backside to support a dust and chip chute we made. Hooked to the 4" dust collection system it really does a nice job of pulling most of the chips away from the lathe base. Makes cleanup fairly easy. The base is not designed to mount casters on, so I mounted the base to a 11/4 thick piece of plywood and mounted the casters to that. Our shop area is pretty small, so most of the big tools have to be mobile.I used Grizzly 3" locking casters, as they lock the wheel and the swivel mech. with one lever. This works out real well, still very solid. The added benefit was that now my sweetie can sit on her stool and work on the lathe (she primarily does small stuff)at just the right height for her, yet I don't have to stoop to work on the machine. This is a great addition to the Jet Mini Lathe or the Delta Midi. Recommend it highly.

    5Lathe Stand
    By J. Wilbur
I ordered this stand with the JET mini variable speed lathe. They arrived together. I had the lathe on the stand in about an hour. As a non-woodworking grandma I found it easy to assemble and not so heavy that I couldn't do it by myself. I am waiting for a rolling cart to arrive so that I can wheel it around in the barn and use it where it is easy to clean up after use. Sweep those shaving out the door! Buy one and you will like it. Sure saves on workbench space.

    5sturdy lathe stand
    By kaysa
I didn't have very high hopes for this stand at first. I figured that any strong table would give my Delta midi lathe better support than a flimsy stand. However, this stand is compact, easily transportable, adjustable, and pretty much elimanates all vibration from my lathe. The price might be a bit of a turn off at first, but its worth the money. The adjustable height option is also fantastic, since workbenches are almost never at the 'perfect' height for everyone.

    5Wood Butcher
    By Gilbert F. Mcculley
I have been using this instrument for four months How did I ever do without this meter... I recently attended IWF-2002 in Atlanta. Wagner, etal were showing their various moisture meters at this show. I took some sawmill lumber to the show with me. I tried all of Wagner hand held moisture meters. I quickly discarded all of them except the MMC-210 and the MMC-220. I decided on the MMC-220 because of the capability to calibrate this meter for any species of wood using specific gravity. It is easy to calibrate and use and does not leave holes in the wood. I would recommend that anyone using saw mill lumber and air drying the same USE this meter. It is definitely the best of the hand held meters.

    4Wagner MMC220 moisture meter
    By StevieQ
I bought this meter two weeks ago. After playing with it my impressions are this is a very good meter in general with a very good range. Unlike model L609, which requires you to keep pressure on the switch to stay on, the MMC220 stays on after you press the switch once and let go of the switch. The MMC220 also has an automatic shut off that activates after a couple of minutes of inactivity. There are only a few minor negatives in ergonomics, which are not a big deal, but could make the unit easier to use. For something costing $270, it should have a strap to prevent inadvertent damage from being dropped. Also at this price, it should have real button switches instead of cheap membrane switches. The density correction is also a tad of a nuisance to use. After the unit has been turned on, if you want change the density setting, you have to press the species button once to reveal the current setting. Then if you want to change it, you'll have to press that button again to enter the density change mode. Then you press the button again or hold it to scroll or fast forward to the new density setting. It's not a problem at all if you only have to change the setting once in a while, but if you're in a store with lots of exotic woods and you have to change the setting with each species, it gets to be a little annoying. Maybe some kind of electronic rotary input dial or even a numeric keypad might work better.

    5Great unit!
    By Dean Bielanowski
The features are simple (which is actually a good thing in this case) and there is very little to know to get it working correctly. My 6 year old daughter can use it properly with no issues! In terms of accuracy, the unit is factory calibrated. While I couldn't directly measure the accuracy, i was pretty sure it would be quite accurate given the type of tests I had done and knowing how well each piece of lumber I tried it on had been dried previously. I am confident in the units repeatable accuracy. It seems much more accurate than any pin moisture meter I have owned before.Of course, this accuracy does come at a price. At around US$[...] retail, the MMC220 moisture meter is an investment that requires a little budget consideration. But when it comes to measuring wood moisture, and avoiding costly problems associated with using wood that wasn't as dry as it should have been before use, I feel a little extra dollar investment in a good moisture meter is a worthy avenue to take for future piece of mind, and more solid and stable woodworking projects!Wagner do have several other (less expensive models) in their range with similar features if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, but be sure to check features carefully to ensure the unit you buy will match your requirements.Overall, however, I was very happy with the performance of the MMC220. If you have the money, it's a definite buy item.(with regards to specific gravity charts mentioned by another reviewer, if you take a look at the included documentation and CD, you can easily find SG measurements for almost any wood, exotic or native on the CD and via the couple of websites mentioned on the CD). I had little trouble finding the measurements of specific gravity for most woods I use).
