5A great toy!
By homeschooling mom of 6
This is a wonderful toy that helps with hours of imagination and creativity! Yes, there are small pieces. We have had it come apart too but only if you pick it up by the roof. We always hold the base and carry it that way. It is hard if you have an array of ages in your home. It is unrealistic to think the older kids can't have toys because they could be choking hazards to the younger. We have taught them to be careful to clean all the pieces up and watch the baby doesn't tear things apart. Our 9,8,5 and 3 year olds love this farm and I would recommend first to over 4 years old but if it isn't possible just be aware of the choking hazard. In my experience, when it has fallen apart, the small pieces that secure it have stayed in place nicely and helped me know how to reassemble. It isn't that hard if you were the one that put it together originally. It would seem to me the reviewer with the destructive play date should re-think the toys they let rough friends play with. This is an expensive set and wouldn't be something I would let destructive, disrespectful or very small children play with anyway. It doesn't seem right to be annoyed at the toy when it clearly states there are small parts. Anyone who had owned playmobil knows about the tiny parts. That's what makes it so much fun!

5My son loves this!
By Dena
Because this toy comes in a "kit" form, i.e., has to be assembled, my son and I had a great time not only playing with it but putting it together! He is totally enthralled with all the parts and pieces, and the price is reflected in the amazing attention to detail. It's a great gift and I will definitely be purchasing other playmobil toys. (Keep in mind, with lots of small pieces, it's not the best toy if you have young toddlers)

5Lots of play value!
By C. Murphy
We gave this to our six year old daughter last Christmas and she has played with it all year. Yes, it requires a one-time set-up, but the instructions are straight forward. I did pause over the price, but I'm really glad we bought it: its been played with all year. I love the Playmobil toys because there is so much room for imaginative play. Our daughter and a friend played with this toy for over an hour today!

3superficial quality
By G. McNeil
I have been using the Cougar for over a year now and have concluded that it is a combination of the best and the worst in consumer products. In the end analysis it is ok for someone who doesn't mind tinkering, modifying and repairing. If it wasn't for the online community I would have thrown my Cougar away a long time ago. These guys are the BEST thing going for the Cougar. Support from the manufacturer is far from acceptable. Now for the good and the bad.

This product has a great feel about it. Largely because it's all metal, heavy and seems durable. The metal, however, is very soft and, consequently, easy to strip threads. The switches and pots are low quality. Replacement pots are only available through the manufacturer as they were specially made. (I think by CTS) The Throttle Quadrant has a speed brake switch which is on in the forward position, off in the middle position and momentary on in the back position. The switch itself is the toggle variety. It is guided by a plastic guide that works well when properly aligned but there is nothing designed into the product to insure alignment. You'll have to fix this yourself or the guide is likely to break. Fortunately the procedure is detailed in Frugals World Cougar forum.

Programmability is a big plus with the Cougar. Again, if you are not up to tinkering and just want to plug and play, look for something else. If you don't mind spending some time with your face in the manual and working through a profile or two you will have incredible flexibility.

The throttle itself is rather sticky through its range of motion and there are two detents for idle and afterburner. All in all it is clunky and I opted to remove the detents. As far as the sticky motion is concerned I have yet to find a way to fix it.

The Cougar is not really a desktop item. Sure it's heavy and you would think it would stay put but it doesn't. It is a lot more enjoyable when anchored to a platform. If you are contemplating this purchase I suggest that you go to and get familiar with http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/. They will be your primary support group and you can get some insight to the problems and soulutions that the rest of us are working through.Pay special attention to the instructions when loading the software. There seems to be a problem with version 2.04 that damages the throttle pot.

2All show, no go
By Ninoslav Tomlinovic
Pros:1. metal and sturdy (except throttle lever support which is plastic and actually broke on mine). Metal makes for great feel of the stick, much better than any plastic joystick.

2. Vast programming abilities (rivaled only by top competition equipment). This is, IMO, the best thing about the Cougar.

3. Impressive looks and design - a real stunner. Better than any other joystick in this regard.

Cons:1. Poor gimbal construction. The stick will inevitably develop center play which, in combination with stiff springs, makes the center position feel like a detent - this effectively denies any precision control near the center. A fix for this is available as a 3rd party product, but is costly - almost twice as the Cougar itself.

2. Poor quality potentiometers. With joystick this expensive, HAL (contactless magnetic potentiometers) are the way to go, or at least high quality potentiometers found in competition products. HAL potentimeters for Cougar are also available as a 3rd party product, but are costly (a kit of three is slightly less than 200$).

3. Sticky feel with throttle. The material has quite a difference in friction, which means it is hard to move the throttle, but once you do move it, it is hard to stop it in desired position. No precision here. If the resistance is lowered, the throttle lever falls forward/backward due to its own weight !

Verdict: A wannabe quality product which simply falls short in crucial areas. Requires significant additional costs to make it work as advertised. Definitely not recommended, as there are much better options out there.

3A Hobby unto Itself. Softcore Simmers Beware.
By R. Bowen
For two years I owned a Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS, touted as the ultimate flight simmer's controller, and in that time I all but stopped simming. Honestly, in two years I flew perhaps a dozen hours at most. Before the Cougar, I simmed much more--off and on for years--and did so on lousy to middling equipment: bargain-bin trash, a CH Flightstick, and later, a CH Combatstick USB. By then I found myself playing Falcon 4.0 religiously, so when it became "necessary" to pick up a throttle, I passed over the homely CH Pro Throttle and reached for the sexy, uber-F16 controller, the Cougar.Next to the Cougar, any other controller looks like it came free with a Happy Meal. It's so sleek yet solid and rugged--it's simply gorgeous. You'll find yourself ogling it, polishing it, displaying it, and even fashioning dust covers for it. You'll also appreciate its features, ergonomics and simplicity. The trigger is dual-stage. Every button on the throttle falls under a finger. And that throttle, along with gameport rudder pedals (should you have them), plugs directly into the stick base, forging a single mega-controller with a gazillion buttons and axes, all routed to your PC through a single USB plug. Elegant.Packaged with the Cougar comes a simmer's dream date: a 183-page manual, your guide to the complex software suite that drives the Cougar. You'll want to take it to bed, curl up under a reading lamp and spend the night with it. But that's where the problems start. It doesn't illuminate; it obfuscates. If the Cougar Reference Manual concerned baseball, chapter one would be "The Infield Fly Rule," and the first page would delve into the Old English etymology of "field." In other words, one must learn Cougar-programming in spite of it. Expect to spend several Saturdays getting nowhere. Expect to procrastinate, and, for the thin-skinned among you, expect to give up. And that's too bad, because the point of owning a Cougar, besides its looks, is to harness its powerful programming features for your own purposes.Ultimately, though, the Cougar is a piece of hardware, and yes, a great looking one. So how does it feel? In a word, STIFF. As a former (and current) CH user, I found it difficult to make small, discreet motions with the stick and tiring to hold precise bank angles. I also found it tough to move the throttle; to paraphrase another reviewer, it's tough to get it going, and once going, tough to stop on a dime (though to be fair, it's the only throttle I've tried). Then there's the issue of bad potentiometers, a common Cougar complaint. Bad pots mean dead axes, and dirty pots mean "spiking" or sudden input surges. I experienced neither. Yet reading Cougar forums induces a nagging fear that those pots will eventually require replacement, or at least periodic cleaning. That's off-putting, to say the least; I thought the whole point of buying the best is so you don't have to do this. In fact, many a happy Cougar owner does this and more, tackling its shortcomings through third-party upgrades: new potentiometers, softer springs, precision-machined brass gimbals, aluminum switch casings, and so on. These mods require not only cash--lots of it--but time, technical expertise and a modest workshop, complete with soldering iron, multimeter and an assortment of lubricants and cleansers. Even getting the Cougar to work as advertised with CH Products' Pro Pedals Gameport (arguably the standard in analog pedals) takes a rewiring job. Not exactly plug-and-play.Clearly, there's a type of simmer who revels in this. He's the kind of person who loves to work on his car over the weekend. Personally, I'd rather drive my car and leave repairs to my local mechanic. In the case of the Cougar, unfortunately, that mechanic is you, baby, you! Do yourself a favor and take a personality test before buying one. If you lack the tinkerer temperament, not to mention time (sims take enough time already!), engineering smarts and excess cash, consider looking elsewhere. Or you just might end up doing what I did: nothing. I let my Cougar sit idle until one day I sold it.

5Great for 18 months and up! But expensive...
By Zossima
The Thomas train and train collections are durable toys. Their real value, though, is that playing with the toys allows children to act out the great Thomas and Friends children's stories they read and watch. THIS PARTICULAR SET IS BASED ON THOMAS AND BERTIE THE BUS' FAMOUS RACE.

The set is uniquely designed to imitate the race. The layout on the box has separate lines for Thomas and Bertie. The lines run parallel part of the time. There also is a unique bridge that supports two lines going over on top. Finally, this is the newer type of Thomas track that has the clickety-clack (grooved) railroad track on one side and striped road on the other side. ANY CHILD WHO HAS SEEN BERTIE AND THOMAS' RACE ON VIDEO WILL LOVE THIS SET. BUT IT IS EXPENSIVE!

There is generic track available that costs far less. Our kids haven't noticed the difference. It is easy to create elevated track and bridges using lego or duplo pieces as supports.

Kids' imaginations can remarkably supply buildings and water towers and cranes, etc., so that they won't even miss what might be lacking from less expensive sets. And families can build some of these items themselves out of old boxes, etc.

Purchasing recommendation:* Choose which type of Thomas trains you will 'standardize' on. There are three kinds: This size of wooden trains from Learning Curve; larger, plastic, battery-operated trains from Tomy; and smaller, die-cast metal trains from Ertl. The wooden trains have the most products and accessories available.

* The clickety-clack (grooved to look like real railroad) track in the Thomas series is great, but it's expensive; I recommend buying generic track. ... You can literally save hundreds of dollars by buying these kinds of sets.

* Buy the Thomas and friends engines separately--and wait for sales. The kids care about the characters, so no short-cutting (ie., Brio or generic trains) here.

* Look for trains bundled with VHS videos. You can get a video and a train (on sale) for about the same price as a train alone.

5Grandkids enjoying it !!
By Beverly Couture
I bought this set for the grandkids to play with at Nana's house. The children age 5 and 2 are really enjoying it and Nana couldn't be happier. I have added a few Thomas destinations without purchasing extra track. If you are considering a Thomas collection for your little ones this is a great set. Watch for sales !! Amazon has some really good ones !

5Every Fireman needs a Station
By qttwink
I purchased this Thomas Fire Station for my son last Christmas (age 5). He loves all his Thomas the train items and this Fire Station was icing on the cake for my little fireman. He enjoys setting up the track with his Fire Station. As his other engines/trains circle the track a fire surpisingly occurs, than here comes the Fire Engines to put out the fire. This is a must have accessory to add to your set, if you little man loves being a Fireman. At age 6 he is looking forward to Christams and adding more accessories/builings/track/engines to add to his collection.

5Time For Thomas
By Richard R. Carlton
The Thomas train sets are great modern versions of the classic indestructible wooden train sets. Simple enough to avoid the toddler age frustrations of getting the cars to run on the track yet complex enough to engage a wide range of ages (up to and including Grandpas). All the stories help with the imagination part....the books & videos provide an endless source of adventures that can be acted out, although most kids are perfectly capable of inventing their own episodes. Here is my advice, if you are trying to work your way through the maze of start-up options:First of all, you can spend a fortune on a huge set....even if you can afford it, I would start with something small and give the child the joy of receiving a chain of small but intriguing presents over a long period of time. It fosters the joy of giving/receiving and helps teach them to come back again and again to the same toy...watching it grow, asking for specific items from the stories they hear, etc. Several reviewers suggest painting an old coffee table and this is a great idea.I suggest the Figure 8 set (the most popular one) or if you want to spend a little bit more, the Conductors Figure 8 set. Both are complex enough to be interesting, but simple enough to give lots of room for growth. Almost immediately I would add a new present of one of the inexpensive engines (you can ask the child which story they like best and get that engine for them....or buy the engine to go with the video or book in the same gift)....these would be Percy The Small Engine, Bill The Yellow Engine, Treavor, (or a bit more $ for:) The Lady Engine, James The Red Engine, Gordon The Express Engine (he's one of the best stories, I think), or Henry The Green Engine. Now for the good stuff! Give it a month or so, and then reward the child with something really cool like the Barrel Loader or Rusty the Construction 3 Car Set.I honestly can't see the point in the huge multi hundred dollar system sets. If you want to impress the neighbors or something, go for it, but I'm telling you.....most kids will enjoy a large number of small thoughtful gifts, not a "keep-up-with-the-Jones" effort on your part.Good behavior can be rewarded with a pick-your-own trip to the store (there are sometimes when a real time shopping trip can't be beat)By the way, the Thomas stories are based on real restored engines that run in England on the Mid-Hants Railway Watercress line near Winchester (you can read about them an even plan a trip to ride on the real Thomas trains by checking out watercressline.co.uk). They are a day trip from the London rail stations, although I recommend using a B&B in the Winchester area and staying overnight if you decide to go. Winchester was the center of the old Saxon kingdom of Wessex of King Alfred as well as a major early medieval site (the Cathedral has the tombs of many of the Saxon Kings as well as Jayne Austen and Izaac Walton and it was where Richard the Lionhearted was crowned.)

4A pretty good destination
By Rowan
I hoped to get this as a home for the Sodor fire crew engines I already owned. It was a pretty good destination and it came with an adapter you can use for the rails or the road. The reason why I give this destination 4 stars instead of 5 is because the fire truck is slow to come out of the garage at times, and you may want to glue the fire truck's hose and the roof pieces so that they do not get lost (as I have done). Despite this, I think it was a pretty good destination, and it would make a good addition to your collection.

5Granddaughters Joy
By L. Houghton
I bought this for my granddaughter who is 19 months old. She can't leave it alone. The other toys in the house have lost their allure and the trains occupy the bulk of her play time. They are well made, provide her with motor skills improvement opportunities and she loves them. The down side (yes we're indulgent) is that it has led to buying other trains, Thomas & Friends DVD's and books. This is a great starter set and is really all she needs. More track and buildings might be needed when she gets older but she has yet to tire of any of it in the last month and a half. Parents, grandparents, friends, this is a toy that will stand the test of time and worth every penny.

5Holds up to daily playtime!
By Laurel Love
Santa brought this set for my 3 year old son last Christmas and he has played with it everyday since. With daily use, this wooden set is holding up to his rough play. His favorite piece is Cranky the Crane. It's easy to add onto as we have added the hospital and another bridge. We purchased a Nilo table to put the train on so it will stay together. Well worth the money!

4Let the playtime start
By S. Robinson
This product was perfect and the price was a minimum $30 - $40 cheaper than in local stores (Yes, even after shipping!!). I do want to note that if your child already has a set then trying to intermix them will test your engineering degree or patience. The only thing stopping all five stars is that the elevated track corners routinely pop apart with 3-4 year old play. I also recommend that a play table be purchased and used. My child's table and set was a hit with the party guest (even the adults). I found it really was a positive builder for sharing / interactive playtime.
