5MZ-N1 - Best portable minidisc player/recorder!
By Michael Munie
(If you want to read more about minidisc as a format vs mp3, go farther down in this post)

The MZ-N1:I got this about a month ago and I love it so far.

-Sound: 10/10, It's minidisc, it's got MDLP, it records in Type-R, it sounds excellent.-Base unit control: 8/10, the controls on the front could be better, but I use the remote anyways. And the jog dial is an excellent of controlling this unit.-Size: 10/10, so small, so light!-Remote: 10/10, the remote is great, it is very easy to skip to whatever song you want with the easy-to-use job dial. The display is bright and clear.-Battery life: 10/10, it keeps going, and going, and going...-NetMD software: 5/10, It has a long way to go, but if you use the realOne plugin instead to download your music it works much better.-Durability: 6/10, doesn't feel as sturdy as previous models-Headphones: 2/10, the folding design *sounds* cool, but it hurts to wear them but the headphones that come with portable electronics are never good.

Haven't heard of Minidisc yet? A technically superior format to store music on, the minidisc was introduced in 1992, and yet never caught on in the USA. In Asia Minidisc made it big and is there to say. (As was clearly evident when I just visited Japan) But in the USA, minidisc was ignored for one reason or another, and has been compared to the Beta-Max format. Which is an interesting comparison, because just as BETA was techincally superior to VHS, minidisc (I believe) is Superior to the MP3 format. But minidiscs are making a comeback! Now all the new models are able to download mp3's from your computer as well as do all the things they were able to do before! In minidisc you can store your music in 3 different levels of quality called SP (highest, near-cd quality, ~320kbps MP3 quality, 80 minutes per disc), LP2 (medium quality, ~192kbps MP3 quality, 160 minutes per disc), and LP4 (medium-low quality, ~96kbps MP3 quality, ~5 hours per disc, ideal for recording lectures, ect... or if you don't have stringent music quality standards)

The minidisc's themselves (That hold the music, not the players) are small and durable, about the size of a 3 1/2 floppy, but very cool looking. They cost about [$] each (5 hours of music on a [$] disc, beats solid state flash cards anyday) They come in many different styles of all different colors. They also can be recorded on over a million times, and with the tracks already on there, you can divide the tracks, rearrange them, recombine them - it's like be able to mix on the go. The players very light and easily fit in a shirt pocket (About on par with a solid state mp3 player in size).

Now you're probably wondering why someone would choose a minidisc player/recorder over a mp3 player (and in some of the newest models, recorders as well).

I personally have had and used mp3 players from when they first came out with a Rio 300, and then moving on to a Rio 500. I've used some of the mp3 cd-players as well - though their ability to hold tons of music is nice, I don't really like their large size. Plus, as a medium, I find CD's to be fragile - they scratch very easily. Minidiscs however have a CD-like disc on the inside (magneto-optical instead of pure optical like CD's) that is protected by a shell, which makes minidiscs very durable. I can throw them on the floor of my car, or in the glove compartment and they will work flawlessly when I put them in my player.

Solid-state MP3 player have a few disadvantages (and advantages) compared to minidisc players.

Why Minidisk is better than mp3:- You can bring along many minidiscs (which cost ~$2 each and store up to 5 hours) while flash cards are $$$ and it is only practical (for normal people) to own around 1 or 2 flash cards for their player. If you want to travel with music you want something small (Minidisc beats mp3-cd players) and that stores lots of music (Minidisc beats solid-state mp3). I traveled with a Rio, and I got REAL tired of those 25 songs after 2 weeks...- You can record anywhere: when I hear an excellent track on a friend's discman (or home system, or mp3 player, or any audio source!), I can hook up my minidisc player right then and there and record the track onto my Minidisc!- The battery life is massive - 110 hours on the mz-n1!- You don't need to be tied to your computer to use it, though you can take advantage of your computer to use it if you feel like

mp3 advantages:-Easy download to your player. But now with minidisc NetMD you can download your mp3's from your computer at high speeds that are almost as high as mp3 players, but they don't need to be as high because you only need to record a mix of your mp3's once, and then you can keep it and just swap discs. When you want new songs in a mp3 player you have to go to your computer every time, you can't just swap discs (unless you got mega-$$ for flash cards)-I'm out of other reasons.

Go buy a Minidisc player/recorder!

4bah, Sony, you could have done better....
By Tim_Bunales
I have had the Japanese import model of this unit since early February, and I must say that overall, this model is model was well worth the four hundred fifty I paid for it. It's light portable and fits easily inside the felt baggie that comes supplied with the unit.

In the six almost seven months that I have owned this unit, a couple of things have happened. Since I had the Japanese model, I got the newer, slimmer, RM-MC12ELK remote supplied with mine. The US models are supplied with the older RM-MC11EL remote. I must say that US buyers surely did get the better remote. My 11EL remotes from my previous R900 and my portable CD player (D-EJ955) have lasted longer and put up with more wear and tear. About one month after, the text started wearing off the remote and button functions began to malfunction. The hold switch was hard to move, and the volume/track changer button was hard to pull in and out. So here's my fair warning: don't import.

Now for the software; the bundled OpenMG Jukebox completely stinks. You really need to have a fast computer with plenty of RAM to have this program work fast and properly. I bought this unit expecting to have the ability to do two things: one being to UPLOAD, and two to end files to my MD in SP Mode. OpenMG Jukebox does support SP files, but are only transfered at the sound quality of LP2. The CDDB function on OMG doesn't work right until you have to manually configure it. Simple, OMG [is not good], bottom line.

Now the other bundled software, SimpleBurner (also known as Quickrip) works fairly better. SB allows you to put a CD in and burn it directly to a MD in LP2 or LP4 mode, but don't count on fast conversion times. All of the software must convert the music files to ATRAC first, which takes about 3 minutes per song, depending on size. This was something I was also not aware of when I bought this unit.

Now, one person has found a very nice way to get around all of these software problems. All you need is Nero, and your good to go. I myself prefer this method more than just regular software. ...

The battery times are once again fudged by Sony. In my tests, I have never cranked out 86 ours of playback using a fully charged gumstick and an external AA battery. The closest I got was around 53 and a half hours. Sony needs to take a lesson from Sharp, create smart chargers. Ni-MH gumsticks suffer from the memory effect, which occurs when the battery is charged when it doesn't need to be. Your battery will last shorter and shorter until finally you get around 4 hours of playback. Sharp, has a function built into almost all of their models which checks to see if your battery is full or not and starts a discharge of the battery, that way fully discharging the battery before it recharges it.

For the unit itself, I really like the design and functions, but there are still some issues that Sony has still not fixed. One is the End Search function. I know they've done a little better by making you disable the function on a menu, but if you forget to press End Search before you record, you still have the dreaded problem of recording over previously recorded songs. Another problem is the battery door. You would thing that after many years of having the same flimsy plastic that they'd learn that it should be magnesium alloy or some sort of aluminum composite. A fourth being the volume buttons. Lousy placement. You drop the unit on the side that has the volume buttons on it, you may have one heck of a problem. Many people on board all over the internet have had units that volume buttons have become hypersensitive (i.e. bringing up various menus when slightly touched) and have since had to repair their units.

Overall this unit reaches a milestone in the ten years of MD existence.

If you are considering buying this unit (or infact ANY NetMD units, I would consider holding off until the second generation units hit the markets in December. These units may have improved battery life, the newly developed Atrac Type S DSP (which improves upon the sound quality in SP, LP2, and LP4 modes), better software, and the possibility of uploading.

2Serious problems uploading recordings done with external mic
By A Customer
The minidisc can be used for several things. Among those:

1) listening to songs recorded in CDs. I have to say I am very happy with this fonctionality.

2) Recording songs with an audio microphone (not included).Very interesting fonctionality for people who play music and want to record themselves in rehearsing or live concerts (in my case, playing the violin). This is what I bought it for. The quality of the recording is excellent, given the means and compared to previous non-professional portable analog formats. Serious problem: the software included does not permit to upload songs to the computer not downloaded before so you can not transfer it easily to other audio formats. I asked Sony customer service and basically after three tries of their complex web support system I got either no response or authomatically generated useless responses.

I am amazed at how durable the 36 grit sandpaper is. I ran 46 salvaged 16' redwood 2x12's riddled with old square nails through my drum sander. I only changed the sandpaper 3 times. Good product.

5Superb color, superb product!

(...)This printer is FAST! I use this printer for printing customer proofs (I'm a part-time professional photographer), and the colors are more accurate than photo-quality ink-jet prints (although ink-jet prints are generally more pleasing to the eye).

4What a Great Printer - A Workhorse
By Rick S.
I've had this printer for about a year now and it has been amazing. I work on private placements frequently and sometimes need to be able to print 100+ page documents at all hours of the day and night. This printer can crank them out amazingly fast, with great print quality and duplex printing to save paper. (I formerly used an old laser Multi-function device that printed at about 25% the speed, with no color, duplex or network connectivity - uggh!)

While I do not use the printer for extensive photo printing or other home/entertainment purposes, the color printing is excellent for business purposes - reports, proposals, etc.

The internal print server did burn out about 6 months after I bought it. HP Service was great - sent me a new part ASAP and I was up and running right away - very much unlike some of the customer support experiences I have had with other consumer electronic device manufacturers (Philips/TiVo). (The issue manifested itself by the printer "disappearing" from my available printers, needing to be reinstalled from time-to-time. I finally figured out what was going on after calling HP support when it happened a couple of times. All is fine now.)

5For Car Grade Polishing, This is the One to Have.
By Bob Feeser
I have looked all of the polishers available here at Amazon. Using something at 1750 RPMs might be ok for some finishes, but to get true high quality gloss, you need a 2400 RPM machine. Less than that, you don't bring up deep gloss. More than that, with the speed of a sander or grinder (4500=6000 RPM) will burn your finish right up. This Milwaukee has the right speed, and it is variable if you want to go into a different level of polishing, than the automotive level. With 11 amps in the motor, you are sure to have the kind of power that will guarantee a constant speed, even when you have a 7" bonnet loaded with compound. Another great feature is the locking collet. I had a body shop for 20 years, did a lot of high end cars, personally spent more hours on a 7" polisher than would be believable if I stated it, seriously, and locking collet would be a dream come true. Most polishers have an allen wrench based nut in the center of them, which holds the rubber backing pad to the shaft. When it is time to change a pad, it is often frustrating, because of the center nut. All you can do to change the pad is hold on to the backing pad, and use an allen wrench. That resulted in a slipping backing pad, sliding around the spindle. To have a locking collet is an engineering dream for a polisher. Since polishers require a lot more torque, and beefy components, than a grinder, it is comforting to know that this Milwaukee has helical gearing, and all ball and roller bearings. I have come to appreciate the heavy duty build on Milwaukee tools. Their new Lok Tor cordless drills are the highest torque in the industry. Their 11 amp sawzall is the best, and the list goes on. I noticed a comment in the editorial review, that a pro might need more speed. NOT. This polisher covers the proper speed. A burn mark in a polished finish, looks like a raising of the material, in a little series of ridges. Another peril of too much speed is a quick burn through the finish, revealing base coats for example primer. I mention this because this is the heavy duty unit. You don't need something faster, or more powerful. You would be hard pressed to find another tool out there that does the job better. The competition, with less power, slower speeds, and that funny handle that goes over the top of the polisher is not what you want. I went into the local home center and felt that handle position just today. It is uncomfortable for polishing. You want your hand out out to one side of the head, just the way this Milwaukee is. They further enable you to choose a side, in the event that you are left handed. It gives you a wider stance with a side handle, which equals better control. All in all this is a five star piece of equipment. It costs a little more than the competition, but the extra money is put in the tool. Highly recommended.

5You get what you pay for.
By E. Kasdorf
This is the third polisher I have purchased, the first two were inexpensive Craftsman units and neither lasted very long. I have owned a Milwaukee sawzall for twenty years and it has been great. This Polisher is every bit up to the quality I expected. I have used it for polishing and sanding and its power and speed range are up to the tasks. Changing sanding disks or polishing bonnets is quick and easy with no tools required, also the speed control feature makes using the unit almost fool proof. The Bottom line is you get what you pay for.

4Not VSR or high RPM
By Max Power
I got this for a good price. It's a powerful polisher. It's built kind of like an angle grinder but with higher RPMs so you can get a deeper polish. It's fairly heavy because it has a good motor on it.It's good to take oxidation off boats, buff tile floors, or polish paint jobs on cars. I can't really find other uses for it. I think this would be better if it was variable speed and higher RPMs. If you use this for a living or you want to do show-quality work, you probably want to pay the little bit extra for their next step up.It comes with the rubber backing pad, but not an actual buffing pad. It's made in China now, and doesn't seem quite as well put together as their older models made in the US, but most of those you find have a lot of hours on them. The guts of the tool still seem built to last based on appearance and weight. Still grease coated copper windings and replaceable brushes.Hope that helps.

5Fabulous table!
By ThreePeas
LOVE this table. I wanted to buy a play table/art table in one and this is it. It couldn't be easier to put together (say 15 seconds) and it's bright and cheery and very very sturdy. It has 4 storage bins (2 orange 2 red) and the legs of the table are purple. The top board (which is removable and SO easy to clean) is green. Underneath the board is some more storage. The base of the table is grey. My son sits on top of the table with the board on it and it is very stable - it's a thick board. One side of the table has a lip, the other doesn't (for doing artwork very nice). It does NOT come with chairs. Here's a tip: Call Little Tikes directly to get the chairs IF you do not need 4 (they sell them in sets of 4)they don't advertise this but they will sell you one, two whatever you need. Plus if you buy the four pack it comes with one red, 2 yellow and a blue (what???? they don't match the table and why not 2 of one color 2 of another). Anyway, I called them and bought 2 red and my son LOVES "his chairs" because they are the perfect size for the table and well, they're his! My only regret about this table is that it's just a few inches shy of being able to fit the thomas train tracks. Step2 makes a table that does fit the trains also but that table is not as sturdy and not as nice AND it has built in tracks which doesn't work for us. So, we will also buy a train table but that's fine because when I bought this I wasn't thinking about the trains because my son wasn't interested in them then. You CAN set the trains up to work with this table but my son does alot of arts and crafts we would have to take the trains down and put them back up and down - too much work, I'm exhausted thinking about it. Either way, I would buy this table again - it's fantastic. AND, if you do have a little artist - get the messy mat to put under the table - it's so convenient.P.S. Here are the dimension of the ACTUAL TABLE NOT the box dimendions as they state above:Product Size 51.0"L x 28.0"W x 19.0"H / 29.00 lbs. 8.00 ounces (Hope this is helpful!)

5Great little table

We have had this table for almost 3 years and use it primarily as a train table. It has held up well. I wanted something compact for our sunroom with lots of storage and it delivers. I have even brought the top part outside, filled the 2 storage compartments with water and let the kids use it for waterplay. It's lightweight, easy to move around. Kids can take a bin out and play separately. 2 friends of mine bought the same table and have had their money's worth. We placed a train-mat on the surface for more fun! Pieces are easy to access and the additional storage under the surface is a plus.

5Durable, Very useful table
By April Murray
We purchased this table for our 2 year old son to use for his Matchbox and Hot Wheels Car sets. The assemby is very easy and the table is very strong. My son ends up on top of it quite often and there have been no problems with it toppling over. We have not tried to put his trains on it yet, but it would definitely work for that too. The little storage containers are nice and when you have the table in the highest position, there is room underneath the table for additional storage boxes.

4Does the job, but not quite 5 stars
By M. Groves
The good news is, it humidifies. That's what I bought it for and that's what it does. The level of humidity is adjustable, allowing the unit to automatically cycle on and off as needed. And yes, you can adjust the fan speed, but getting it anywhere near the upper range makes it sound like a B29 taking off. IT'S LOUD! I leave it on med-low and it's not bad at all.It has two plastic 2.6 gallon water bottles and at the med-low fan speed I use, I go through about 1 bottle per day. It keeps the rooms close to it quite comfortable, but rooms farther away don't get much. Your mileage will vary depending on humidifier location, floor plan, and normal air circulation. As far as being built "sturdy" (as one reviewer pointed out), I have to disagree. The entire housing is made of plastic. Without the water bottles in it, it's so light that on a hard floor it easily rolls away with the lightest bump. Unless you are on carpet, I recommend NOT installing the castors that come with it. The weakest part of the whole unit is the stupid lid. It's constantly falling off it's hinges when I'm replacing the water bottles. It's just poorly designed.I highly recommend buying the optional "air cleaner filter" (model #1051) that fits on the back. It helps clear your house of dust and pollen and also makes your internal wick last longer. For allergy sufferers, this is an absolute MUST.Speaking of making wicks last longer, it wasn't until I read the owner's manual that I found out soft water is NOT recommended as it's supposedly not good for the wick. Oh well. The only NON-softened water I have is my outdoor hose and there's NO WAY I'm going out there every morning in the snow to fill my humidifier bottles! All in all, I give it a 5 in performance, 4 in construction, and a 2 in convenience. (Hey, refilling and lugging 22 lbs of water every morning gets old!) Since performance is really what we want out of it, it gets an overall score of 4 stars from me.BTW, use about 1/2 as much of the anti-bacterial additive as the bottle recommends and it does just fine.Cheers!

2poor quality
By B. Ellis
ON the plus side the unit is capable of putting a lot of moisture into the air. In the first 24 hours of running it put almost 15 gallons out.The negatives stack up fast mostly due to poor finish quality. 1) The stain on the top cover has drip marks on it and portions of it look like a chemical was spilled on it removing its luster. 2) The back of the unit is not stained but is white and in the directions its says to leave the unit 4" from any wall which means you do see the back of the unit. The hinges on the back which hold the cover in place and stick up were not painted and they are clearly visible.3) The unit is made of plastic which is to be expected. However the panels of the unit are so thin that they were all warped. The top is ill fitting at best and the front panel has a clear bow to it.4) Its loud on anything more then the lowest settings you cannot carry on a conversation on the telephone in the same room with it.To sum up: It looks like junk but humidifies well.I'm off to go find a place to hide this from sight. Wish it was as pretty as the picture.

1Piece of Junk
By Lawrence Burkholder
The product arrived damaged, not from shipping damage, but from packing at the factory. Too damaged to use. Dealer said they didn't want it back. It's a good thing, because it was replaced by a unit that wouldn't run. I took the fan unit (which wan't damaged) out of the damaged unit and put it in the second unit and it runs, but only at a low fan speed. Anything higher causes too much vibration noise. Also, both units we received were poorly finished, with the base being several shades lighter than the cover, which matches the picture on the box. It looks like they only gave the bottom one coat of stain. Thanks to the dealer who refunded our money. My email with complaints directly to the manufacturer got no response.

5Comfortable and Roomy Hammock
By Floyd Turbo
This is a very comfortable hammock and I find myself falling asleep in it quite easily! I'm 6'1" and find it quite roomy, even if I add a second person. This is one of the few hammocks where someone of my height can comfortably fit without having their head hit the wooden support bar. I'm using the hardware that came with it to mount it on my frame and I've found there's plenty of leeway and adjustments that come with this hammock's chains. I'm not sure why people are slamming this hammock for not coming with a stand, as hammock and stand are ALWAYS sold separately and nowhere does the description state that it comes with a stand. This is a fine, comfortable hammock and I recommend it strongly.

2Rope Hammock
By Sara Connolly
We purchased hammock in March after 4 months the rope on the ends and which connects to the steel frame, shredded, unwound, whatever, we have to return the item and that is not easy since it is a defect and there is no form for returning after such a late date.Looks great.

1Not Happy with Hammock
By A Customer
We received this hammock for our wedding in 2000 and in the summer of 2002 a couple of the ropes broke, so we can no longer use it. I would think for $90.00 we would have gotten at least 5 summers out of it. We put it away for the winter and it still didn't last very long.
