5A great detector for the money!
By Scott E. Snow
Bought this as an open box. What a great detector for the money. I had it out of the box and up and running in 5 mins. Very easy setup!! Took it to the back yard and found 3 pennies in the first 10 mins (one was a wheat penny). The LCD correctly displayed them as a pennies. As this was my first time detecting, the unit seems very easy to use. An excellent choice for those wanting a feature filled detector at a bargin price.

5Sharp Shootin Treasure
By Mark
Just got done trying out the Sharp Shooter II from amazon, 1st find was a 1952 D wheat penny(not bad), three hrs later we totaled at 3 Quaters (1967-1999), 3 Dimes (1953 Silver!, 1967 & 1989), a 1938 Nickel (Ike), and a 1898 Indian Head penny!. All from our small back yard (built in the late 1800's). This thing nailed the ID about 80% of the time, after doing the "quick start demo" settings listed in the manual, 5 minutes-tops & your off. Cool, can't wait to root around so more.

5Bounty Hunter Sharpshooter II
By weekend warrior
I purchased this as a compliment to my son's BH EX detector so we could spend time away from his WII and PSP. Not being experienced with detectors and the features available I first spent time online watching tutorials etc... (Recommended!) With insight gained from experts the criteria for purchase came down to: discrimination, notching, motionless detection, penetration depth, and price. The BH sharpshooter II met all of these. Particularly the price was interesting as it is a recently discontinued model. To date the unit has performed very well. There is some 'chatter' in the discriminate and notch modes. Mostly big ferrous stuff will set off a random combination of tones regardless of the tuning. Dig a few of these and you quickly learn to listen to what the unit is telling you. Conversely, a solid tone is equally clear to the user once one learns to 'listen' to the unit. I've found the motionless 'all metal' detection mode particularly useful to gain a sense of the size and general shape of a hit before digging. Of course, the Sharpshooter II will not keep up with the high end professional detectors (as some owners of these like so much to point out). Bottom line: If it was intended to perform like a $2000 detector it would cost as much. For myself, I've found it to be an excellent combination of features (typically found on more expensive machines) and price. I recommend it to any 'weekend warrior' looking for extras while also keeping to a budget.

5Best metal detector for the money anywhere!
By A Customer
I did a lot of searching and review reading on the internet before finally deciding what to buy. I am convinced Quick Draw II is THE best value available of any make by any conpany. The features on the QDII are generally found only on much higher priced detectors. This thing really works as advertised. I have already found several coins and other things right in my own yard. It will reliably indicate what coin is being detected although it many times confuses dimes and pennies on the LCD readout. It is very sensitive and detects most coin size items very reliably to about 6 or 8 inches. The auto notch discrimination works well and filters out most trash items. I have used metal detectors that ended up being aggravating and frustrating. This one is a pleasure to use and is quickly becoming a relaxing and profitable pastime for me. If you want a serious metal detector without spending a whole lot of money give it a try... you won't be disappointed...

5`underestimated detector
By F. Docherty
The Bounty hunter QDII is a detector that allows both the proffesional and amateur detectorist to make excellent finds. although it is in Bounty hunters interest to push their higher price models, the QDII is probably the equal of most detectors in a much higher price bracket, and is in my opinion not promoted enough. It is good on the beach, on both wet and dry sand, it is at home inland, in forest, park, or ploughed field. it is advanced in its electronics, and very lightweight. this detector is in a class of its own, and very affordable. Dont allow the low price to put you off, this detector is easily the equal of detectors in the £600 price range, and will pay for itelf in no time at all.

4Great Beginner Detector - Good Value
By A. Winford
A small caveat before you read this review. Understand who this detector is marketed towards. Individuals with a lot of metal detecting exposure or experience will mock this inexpensive version of a more sophisticated Whites or Garrett detector. However, if you are a beginner, this is not a bad first investment considering the prices of some of the more advanced detectors on the market. I was an avid detector fan in high school for a summer some twenty years ago and only recently got bit by the same bug that has infected my eight year old son after watching the National Treasure movies. So for Christmas he got his Bounty Hunter Jr. and I got this detector but the Walmart branded version which is the Pioneer 202.First, this detector is excellent at honing your digging skills, something you will need as you advance along in the sport. The reason? I dig a lot. A whole lot. With this detector, I find it very difficult to adequately pin-point my target, even using the suggestions that were included in a nice DVD that comes with the product demonstrating its features. However, as I get more accustomed to the detector's quirks and improve my pinpointing abilities, this skill will server me well after I spend $800 - $1000 on a detector with more advanced pinpointing technology. Also, because I dig a lot, I've learned to repair the ground where I torturously labored for some time. That is really my only negative, again, referencing the market for this detector. The detector comes with some nice discriminating features. It has a manual discriminator that allows you to progressively eliminate certain objects. You can test this by moving the discriminator knob slowly, while you pass objects you want to eliminate over the search coil. Typically I have had success by simply starting in the `All Metal Mode', the default each time you turn it on, to get a feel for the area I am search and then hitting the Auto-Notch. The Notch feature allows you to selectively eliminate certain objects while still seeing others. Auto-Notch is preprogrammed to eliminate most junk. It still detects most coins except nickels but still detects smaller pieces of trash like foil. It does eliminate pesky pull tabs, bottle caps, tin and nails. The audio you hear is based on the signature it receives as the search coil passes over the object. The signatures are:Low Tones - Iron, Foil, Nickel and Gold RangeMedium Tone - Pull Tab, new penny, zinc, and GoldHigh Tone - Copper Pennies, Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar, Silver Dollar and Silver RangeAside from the tones, the detector has an LCD display that not only tells you the type of metal your object more than likely is, but also its depth. So far, the depth finder has not been off but you must keep in mind it what is displayed is NOT the depth the coin is buried, but you must include the distance from the search coil to the ground in your depth calculations. This has nothing to do with the detector, but something that has caught me a couple of times as I dug. If the target is displayed at 4 inches and I am holding the search coil 2 inches above the ground, then I should dig 2 inches, not 4.I would echo another review that this detector probably is not going to work for relic hunting as in my testing I held near the search coil a small rusted antique iron (the kind people might paint and use for a door stop today) and the detector gave a different signature over each pass (high, low and medium). I am sure this iron is `iron' and not a composite material. The detector just didn't handle it well. All in all, taken for its price and features, it doesn't nor is designed to compete against a Whites or Garrett metal detector. It is an excellent coin shooter. Great in parks or back yards. The coil is submersible but I have not tried beach combing yet. If this is your first venture into metal detecting, I would highly recommend this product for the price. If anything, it will get you the experience you need to truly appreciate the features of an $800.00 Whites or Garrett detector, and the rudimentary skills you will need to be successful and feel that you haven't sunk a lot of money into a hobby that turns out not to be as enjoyable as you thought.

5Bounty Hunter Tracker IV - No Experience Necessary
By Mike Harshe
I figured that any metal detector would find the '32 Chevy buried in my backyard, but I wanted to find coins, rings, and Civil War relics in my 5 acre woods. It took 5 minutes to assemble the Tracker IV and about 15 minutes to review the instruction manual. Round up a few coins, a gold ring, and some nails and run through the demonstration on page 5 of the manual. It will give you an idea of how different objects respond to the 3 detection modes.

I borrowed my wife's headphones (highly recommended) and headed for the woods. Within minutes I found beer cans, shotgun shells, nails. The detector will pinpoint an object close enough that you can dig it up with a few scoops of a garden trowel. On my second attempt I found a man's silver ring.

Tracker IV appears to be well constructed and a good value. I don't have any experience with other detectors, but I can't imagine that any are easier to use than this one. Tracker IV is a great choice for your kids to use, if they can get it away from you!

5Great way to start!
By Carolyn Mathews
When I started researching metal detectors before buying one for my husband, I was overwhelmed with all the reviews, ads, etc., I found on the internet. I printed out all the information that seemed to have a "voice of authority" behind it; it wasn't long before one brand/model seemed to take first place as the best choice for units under $300. Reviews from novices to experts concurred that the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV was a great buy as well as a great metal detector for novice to intermediate users. My husband is not someone who reads the instructions before using anything, but I showed him some of the printouts that warned against trying to use any metal detector without getting familiar with the instruction booklet first (because if you don't know what you're doing, you'll be frustrated and decide the detector doesn't work right). For once, he did spend time reading the instructions and then practicing with the detector as the directions advised. It wasn't long before he was out in the yard and up a mountain actually using his Bounty Hunter IV with success. I also bought him the Bounty Hunter earphones because I read that using earphones prolongs the battery life of the battery in the detector. Earphones also raise the user's chance of success by blocking noises that might cause some of the more subtle indicator sounds to be missed. We live in a windy, windy canyon, so the earphones were a must for blocking wind noise. So far my husband loves his Bounty Hunter Tracker IV, and the learning curve, according to him, was pretty short.

5Fun and Easy to Use
By A Customer
The Bounty Hunter was exactly what I was looking for. My 11 year old son and I wanted to expore metal detecting together. I didn't want to invest a large amount of money in something that was too high tech or that he would lose interest in. I didn't want to spend too little and get a cheap product. This item was priced right and so far has proven to be a quality item. It was easy to assemble (maybe 5 minutes), takes 2 standard 9 volt batteries and is lightweight enough for my 11 year old to handle with ease. The shaft adjusts in height so when I finally get my turn, I can adjust it to fit me.

We are having a ball so far with it. We haven't found any high dollar finds yet, but the neighborhood kids have gone with us the last few days and made it a fun treasure hunt. In our search of a couple vacant lots, we have found 17 cents, lots of nails, an old bottle cap, a saw blade and other misc items. We plan on taking this into the mountains soon, as it is waterproof so you can look for gold in the rivers. We can't wait!

5We love it
By A. Wollmann
We purchased two of these for our shop after initially purchasing a JDS unit (which we still have) It is very well constructed and quiet even at the highest setting. The noise level on high is not high frequency so it sounds more like white noise in the shop. The JDS unit put out a more irritating whining sound. The unit takes standard size 20 x 24 x 2 inch filters. It also has the option to add an internal 20 x 24 x 2 charcoal filter. The bag filter inside is washable. I can't see any down side except for the fact I wish you could turn off the remote feature and just turn it on with an ac switch. Its not cheap but is constructed so well that it really is a great buy.

3Good unit

This filter works very well I'm pleased with its performance.Replacement filters are not a standard size and thus difficult to find. And it would be nice if it could be converted to run on 230 volts.

5This filter works very well!!
By Delburt D
I purchased one of these right after after Jet started selling them. I have it hanging from the ceiling in my shop, from heavy screw eyes driven into the ceiling joists, which has a 12' overhead. I also have a Jet dust collection system and between the two units my shop stays very clean, all things being considered. I do work in my shop full time so I make a LOT of dust. To date I have never had to replace any of the filter elements. I simply blow them out and put them back in. Most of the time I run on the low speed which cleans the air very well, I do want to be able to hear my sound system!!!! My only complaint would be that the remote only works from the side which has the indicator panel on it. Not a major problem as long as you plan for that issue. I have never tried to wash the inner filter as the manual does not indicate that it is washable.

4Updated - Jet's spindle sander, with comparisons to Delta's
By RKM
*Skip to bottom of review for update*I've had a Delta BOSS spindle sander for ~5 years and it worked well until the motor burned out. Repairing it would cost almost as much as a new one, and even if repaired its longevity was questionable (other than that I've been pleased with its performance), so I looked for a replacement and settled on the Jet. I've used the Jet and it does the job intended. However, it has some areas in which it could be easily improved. Following are some comparisons between the Jet and the Delta.1) The Jet is slightly quieter than the Delta, but not a lot - neither is a loud tool.2) The Delta's round table is larger than the Jet's square one. The Jet's table is beefier (the Delta's never showed any tendency to flex).3) The Delta's base is plastic, while the Jet is all metal. The feet for the Delta are molded into its base, with non-skid rubber inserts attached - all four of the molded feet are cracked, though this never caused a problem. The Jet has non-slip feet as well, and given the construction I don't think they'll be cracking or breaking off.4) The Delta's mechanism is simple and looked robust enough. I've read that people have had problems with the nylon drive gear - I did not. However, the cover for the gears broke off at some point.5) The Delta's steel table inserts fit around the spindles well (one for each spindle), with a pattern cut into them to improve dust collection. Delta has modified the BOSS since, and I don't know if its inserts are still steel. There are fewer inserts (also steel) for the Jet (one size is used for multiple spindles). The table inserts in the Jet aren't flush with the cast iron table top, necessitating shimming them.6) The Delta has storage for all its accessories. The Jet has storage for some of its accessories. There's storage for the spindles and inserts, but no provision for storing the supplied wrenches required for changing the spindles. Also, there's no storage for the optional 3" spindle and insert. The Jet's insert holder slots are too narrow for the inserts to slip into (they can be forced). Some filing of the holder would correct this for the most part, but the mounting bolts will restrict the depth to which the insert can fit in the innermost slot. Some of the holes in the spindle holder are too small for the spindle to seat into completely.7) The Delta comes with the full range of spindles (up the 3"). The Jet comes with smaller sizes (down to 1/4"), but the 3" spindle is a costly add-on (and its insert is extra).8) The Delta is almost too tall while sitting on the benchtop (I'm 5' 9"). The Jet is ~3" taller, so it's too tall for benchtop use for me. I built it a rolling stand that puts it at a more comfortable height. This also solved the problem of lifting the Jet onto the bench - it weighs considerably more than the Delta.9) The Jet's spindles are ~1" longer than the Delta's, but given the Jet's tilting table feature, in normal (right angle) use the extra length is lost, and the capacities of these sanders are similar.10) The Delta's dust collection is efficient (when hooked up to a shop vacuum or dust collector - the bag is useless). The Jet is much more open underneath (between the table and the base, to accommodate the tilt feature), so dust collection suffers. I've experimented with some thin plastic sheeting to enclose this volume better). Both tools have odd-sized dust ports.11) The Jet has twice the horsepower of the Delta (1/2 versus 1/4), but I never bogged down the Delta (these are fairly aggressive sanders, so light pressure is the norm). The Delta's motor is an open design (i.e., dust can get in) with no built-in fan, whereas the Jet has a TEFC motor.12) The Jet costs ~$150 more than the Delta.Bottom line: The Jet is a more solidly built machine, and appears to be constructed for the long haul. It has some rough edges that, if corrected, would take it from "very good" to "excellent". Given the extra $150 cost compared to the Delta, Jet should make these corrections. Even as is I'd classify it as a "keeper". The Delta is a decent machine for the money, but my experience with the motor kept me from buying another like it. I own a number of Delta tools (stationary and benchtop), many 15 years old or more, and this is the first failure I've experienced with one.*Update 4/2007*I've used the Jet sander for 2 years and I'm still pleased with it - no mechanical problems whatsoever. The thin plastic sheeting mentioned above works fine for improving the dust collection so I have continued to use it.I considered trying to adapt the spindles and sleeves from the Delta to the Jet, primarily so I could use the Delta's 3" spindle. The Delta would fit on one of the Jet's smaller diameter solid metal spindles (the sleeve length difference has to be addressed). However, I couldn't get the sleeve off the Jet's spindle. I didn't want to cut it off, so I gave up and bought the 3" spindle and insert. The 3" size is just too useful to pass up. It's also overpriced and should be standard equipment. Oh well. With the 3" spindle and insert the storage problem became a real headache, so I removed the two shelves that came with the Jet and built two larger ones out of oak and mounted them where the metal shelves had been. The new shelves are the same length, but are slightly wider (they don't protrude any further out than the table top). As with the metal shelves, one side holds the spindles and the other the inserts. On the insert side I also made provision to hold the two wrenches. Metal angle brackets, bent to match the shape of the sander body, hold the new shelves in place. This is a vast improvement to the stock shelves.

5GREAT ADDITION TO A SMALL SHOP
By KRASSEL
I too want to thank all the contributors who took the time to write a review on this great machine. It definitly influenced my decision to buy the Jet JBOS5. The table on mine was perfect right out of the box and only required getting the shipping gunk off before it was ready to use. It is very quiet while running and has no noticeable vibration. It is heavy enough to not need clamping to the work table while in use. I use the smaller spindles more than the larger one's and have not had a problem with bending them as some of the reviewers have. I make a lot of Bandsaw box's and this tool makes sanding the inside of the drawer cavities a dream. Can't believe I spent the last few years sanding them by hand. The built in dust collection system seems to work ok, still end up with a little dust on the table but the majority of it goes out the hose. I made some inserts to use with the smaller spindles (plexiglas) but the ones that come with the machine are certainly adequate to the task. I haven't felt the need for the 3" spindle as I don't do much furniture work, but this machine has plenty of "ummph" to power a spindle of that size if necessary. I have reccommended it to several friends and would reccommend it to anyone. It definitly is a cut above the delta and ryobi offerings.UPDATE....Nov 2004....I've had this machine for over a year now and am still impressed with it's performance. Can't even estimate how many board feet of wood this sander has cleaned up. Anyone who has tried to sand out bandsaw blade marks on the inside of a box will come to love this thing. I recently purchased an extra set of spindles, so I can have two grit's available. Changing spindles is easier and faster than changing grit size on the spindles. Kind of a spendy way to go, but it has speeded up my production quite a bit. Still haven't bought the 3" but may do that soon. Got some "furniture" projects coming up and it will be very handy. Have had zero problems with this machine and I use it a lot. Still highly recommend it.October 2006..Yep another update..finally got the 3" drum and insert. Well worth the money, find myself using it a lot. Highly reccomend.

5It's a Sweetheart Deal
By Bob Feeser
This sander kicks. I got the first one, and for some reason, the motor was off center, so it was much closer to the edge of one of the rings. It must have been an assembly problem. It's brand new, so rather than fuss with it, I called Amazon, and they promptly sent a replacement. That is why I deal with Amazon. On to the new sander. This is a heavy, approx 80 pound, cast iron top, benchtop sander. The cast iron top is rock solid, smooth, straight, and even all the way across it's ground polished surface. I'm a critical nut, use a dial caliper to measure things, use the Incra table saw fence, which is accurate to within .002" inch. So when I talk about this Jet sander, keep that in mind. Right out of the box, I used the Bosch digital protractor (another highly recommended item) which measures angles in tenths of a degree. (Equal to 3600 dots in a circle), and the spindle was accurate to within 7/10ths of one degree at the most extreme angle, and within 1 or 2/10ths of a degree at the others. So you could say right out of the box it was not off by even one degree. The best you can expect to get for measuring an upright metal shaft, with an expandable thick rubber tube, designed to squash out to hold a circular sleeve of sandpaper. For all intents and purposes, that it dead on. :-) This does not pertain to the built in rule, you use to set the top to 90 degree, 45 degrees, or whatever tilting angle you may choose. After you perfectly set the top with any 90 degree square, it is advisable to loosen the setting screw, and fine adjust the pointer. See mention of this farther into the review. It would be a lot easier to simply say, this Jet Benchtop Oscillating Spindle Sander is perfectly dead on, but then again, perfect is a relative term. I hope your having as much fun reading this review, as I am writing it. :=) So what about the rest of the machine. I wouldn't bother buying anything more powerful. The 1/2HP induction motor found in the base, is a direct drive, with more than enough power to sand rock wood. I mated it on top of a Sears, very inexpensive, two shelf, red, metal, roll around cart. Lots of room for the sander, at a nice height. Also plenty of room, or extras, like the 3" optional drum and insert ring, the wrenches, and whatever amount of sanding tubes, you may need storage for. The lower shelf has even more storage. At the risk of sounding vain, the creme white Jet, with black and red accents, looks great on the matching red color stand. With the roll around wheels, it makes a lot of use for a little bit of dollars. It is Sears least expensive. Back to the sander. You will want to take out a square, and set the table top to exactly 90 degrees to the spindle, then loosen the holding screw to the pointer, and precisely point it to the 90 degree mark on the built in rule. In doing so, and moving it to the 45 degree mark on the rule, by tilting the table, it was a dead on 45 when measuring. So the rule is accurate, once set. The nitty gritty is that this sander is quiet, smooth, plenty of power for sanding edges, even on stacked hardwoods. It has multiple spindle sizes included. The little ones are not meant to lean on, (they go that fine) so if you are trying to remove stock quickly, choose the larger shaft sizes. I do recommend getting the optional 3" spindle, and insert ring, to maximize the smoothness and evenness of sanding larger surfaces.I look at this as a lifetime tool. No need to buy a much more expensive floor standing model. One note on cleaning the top. The manufacturer advises you to clean the cosmolene off of the top with kerosene, and a paper towel. Cast iron rusts just by looking at it, so they protect it for shipping. Anything like a solvent with totally eliminate any surface protection at all. In that condition, even the humidity in the air with start microscopic rusting. Not only does Jet advise you to clean it off with kerosene (which is an oil based product), they then advise you to wax the top. If I had to be critical of the unit, I would say the one disadvantage of a benchtop unit, is that you have to limit the table top size, to prevent tipping over when using larger stock. The Jet JBOS-5 has sufficient top surface to meet my needs, but ever since I installed a large side, and outfeed table on the table saw, I am sensitive to the advantages of larger outfeed tables. One could be built and added onto the benchtop model, and give you more surface than the floor models. All in all, with this kind of solid construction and performance, and price, this is the sweetheart deal. Highly recommended.

5Great Shaper!!
By A Customer
I recently purchased the Jet JWS-25Cs and could not be more happy with the product, pleanty of power!! Setup was easy, no surprises. Fence system is solid. Comes with 1/2 and 1/4 router bit collets. Spindle changes are relatevely easy. Unfortunately you need to open the rear access door to make spindle changes, I wish they designed it to be done from the side access panel to avoid, in my case, having to move the machine away from the wall to open the rear door. I have heard some comments about router bits not working well in shapers because router bits are designed to spin faster. I can tell you that I tried several router bit and they work just fine at the 10,000 rpm setting.

Works very well. Reversible motor, great hold downs. Thesekinds of machines will make you pee your pants if you don'tkeep perfect control of the wood you are working on. This onedoes very well. Changing the cutters are a pain or I would havegiven it 5 stars.

5An Excellent First Bike Choice
By A Customer
I had purchased the Radio Flyer All-Terrain Tricycle, but it was poorly constructed, and had to be returned. This bike was suggested as a replacement, and it is wonderful! My 4 year-old has no trouble stopping or steering (as he did trying another "big boy bike.") He loves to ride "super-time fast" and feels so proud of himself.

I strongly recommend this as a first time bike. The training wheels ride smoothly on the ground, providing as much security as a trike. The bell is fun, and the classic red looks can't be beat. The seat and handlebars are easily adjustable, and can accomodate a larger child (mine is 44 inches and growing...)

5Awesome Bike!
By M. Krantz
We helped my son save his money and helped him buy this bike nearly three years ago. The poor thing has been sorely abused and the original tires are nearly bald but the thing still is in good shape. I cannot think of another toy that has seen so much daily use. A great little bike!

5Freedom Express
By Park Mom
I just finished a three-mile loop on a bike trail with my 3 1/2 year old. He was riding his 12" Radio Flyer Bicycle with training wheels and I either had to walk as fast as I could or jog to keep up with him. It's the first time I've exercised with him without having to push a stroller or tricycle and we both had a great time. The bike is beautifully geared, very easy for him to pedal and brake, and everyone comments on how great it looks...no cartoon character tie-in, no bad race car graphics. It was a little expensive when the shipping was factored in, but I'm glad we went for a good quality bike.
