4Good value for many features

I've been a consumer of Aiwa portable "walkman's" since 1981. Back then the cabinets were made of steel and the units were quite rugged but pricey. A few years ago I tried an Aiwa walkman but returned it because the volume was too weak.

This walkman is loud enough with very little distortion. It has good stereo separation and sufficient bass enhancement for a pleasing sound quality. I was surprised at the sensitivity of the FM tuner. I live in a rural area and can reliably pick up about three stations clearly. This walkman tuned in about double that number quite well.

The feature I most desired in this low-priced unit is the auto reverse. My only suggestion would be to add a button to change the direction of the tape. As it is now it is necessary to flip a direction switch which is a bit cumbersome in my opinion.

I am satisfied with this walkman and recommend it.

4books on tape listener

When I take my dogs for a walk I listen to books on tape so I ordered this personal cassette player because it said auto reverse. It is very light, easy to use and good sound, but not auto reverse.

I'm an avid books on tape listener and this is by far the best tape player I've found. With large FF and REW buttons as well as a stop button and HUGE play button, I can easily find my place on the tape without looking! I also love the snappy colors.

4Good Knives, Wrong Combination

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Grand Prix line is a more modern design than the Classic series, with a simple black handle. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, and a 3 ½ inch paring knife.

The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers three sizes of chef's knives, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 6 inch is a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.

As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick for most tasks.

This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. Judge for yourself.

5Excellent Starter Set

I grab these to knives first. This is the perfect starter set, as you can do most anything with these two knives. The larger chef knife is perfect for when cutting meat, vegetables, dicing herbs, and so much more. The smaller knife is perfect for when going after the smaller vegetables, or fine cuts. These knives are high quality, that can't be beat. They hold a blade very well, and have a good weight in your hand. If you like a pistol style grip these are the perfect knives for you. I honestly can't say enough about these high quality knives.

In 1998, Consumer Reports tested the Wusthof Trident Grand Prix knives & rated them "excellent in every way," describing them as being "the best set the testers had ever used" and stating that they're "the smoothest, most balanced knives we've ever used. Molded plastic handles are textured for better wet grip. Great for chef's blade grip. Heavier than most. Many different types available." Based on their high recommendation of these knives, I purchased a 7-pc. block set. I'm very happy with them.

However, when it comes to sharpening steels, I have found very little difference. As long as you buy a high end steel, you really won't go wrong. Therefore, I shop for this item on price, and Henckels has a price advantage. Unless you want a matching set, shop on price, and look to Henckels.

5An Attractive, Practical Steel to Complement Beautiful Culinar Knives.

Wusthof makes 2 models of sharpening steels to match their Culinar knives. Both are 9-inch (23 cm) steels with the distinctive Culinar brushed 18/10 stainless handle. The other model (4459) has a stainless steel sharpening rod. This model (4469) has a diamond sharpening rod: Industrial diamonds are embedded in a stainless steel rod. I suppose they are ground diamonds, as the surface of the steel is slightly abrasive. Diamond steels have more sharpening effect than stainless steels and may postpone the need to re-grind your knife edge. The handle on this steel is 4 ½ inches (11.5 cm) long including the finger guard at the top of the handle. The sharpening rod is flat and oval, in contrast to the usual round shape. The rod is slightly over ½ inch (14mm) wide and 5mm thick at its thickest point. I don't find the oval shape any more difficult to use than round steels, and it requires fewer passes due to more surface contact with the knife edge. The rod is the same matte silver color as the Culinar handles. This Diamond Sharpening Steel isn't cheap, but it's a sturdy, attractive, accessory for the beautiful Culinar knives.It is recommended that cooks steel their knives every time they are used. Steeling realigns the tiny teeth on your knife edge that go askew from normal use, dulling the blade somewhat. So steeling does sharpen the blade in the sense that it cleans up the edge, but it does not grind the blade. Knife blades must be re-ground every 6 months to 2 years, depending on the material of the blade and how often you use it. Chefs typically regrind their blades once a year using either a sharpening stone, a manual knife sharpener, or an electric sharpener. You can also have knives professionally sharpened if you're not in the possession of a sharpener or not confident in your skills. To steel the blade, hold the sharpening steel in one hand and the knife in the other. Place the blade at a 20-25 degree angle to the steel. And draw the blade across the steel in an arching motion, starting at the base of the blade, applying light, even pressure. (Well, that's difficult to picture, but most knife packages and many web sites have illustrations.) Steel the knife 6-8 times (or fewer if the rod is oval). Don't steel the same side more than once in succession. If angle is much less than 20 degrees, it will scratch your knife and won't steel properly. Not a big deal, but try to avoid it.

5Diamonds and Culinars

When one speaks of "sharpening" a knife, one may be referring to either of two things.One may be referring to what is also called "honing", which is intended to realign the edge of the knife, maintaining the sharpness without removing metal. Typically this is done with a rod of somewhat harder steel - sometimes called a sharpening steel or iron. Many chefs hone their knives on every use.Alternatively, one may be referring to actually grinding away a minute amount of the surface of the edge of the knife, restoring its sharpness when honing no longer does the trick. A "sharpening stone" made of alumina - sapphire grit - is normally used for this. This type of sharpening normally only needs to be done at long intervals - months or years, depending on use.The Wusthof Culinar diamond sharpener seems to act more like a sharpening stone than like a normal sharpening steel - not surprising, since its diamond grit is even harder than the alumina used in sharpening stones. The difference is far more than the mere difference in looks that one of the other reviewers suggests.Why did Wusthof decide to provide what is essentially a premium sharpening stone in the shape of a sharpening steel? I think it goes back to their original Culinar knives. Those original Culinar knives had a different blade composition than most Wusthof knives: the alloy included tungsten in addition to Wusthof's normal chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. I have a few of these older Culinar knives, and the tungsten in their blades allows them to hold an even sharper edge, and keep that edge through a longer period of use. However, the added hardness of the tungsten blade alloy makes honing those knives less effective, so they need to be actually sharpened more often. This diamond sharpener makes that convenient to do.The more recent Culinar knives I have purchased no longer have tungsten in their blade alloys. Perhaps Wusthof got complaints about the eventual dulling of the tungsten alloy blades from people who did not realize they also needed the diamond sharpener. On the other hand, having a diamond sharpener in the shape of a normal steel was evidently sufficiently convenient that Wusthof not only kept the diamond sharpener in their Culinar lineup, but also make a started making a black handled version that matches their other lines of knives.

The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).

This particular model, the bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy.

I highly recommend the Wusthof 9" bread knife.

5best bread knife ever

I make a type of thick-crust bread that required a long period of sawing with any other serrated blade. I have other Wusthof Culinar series knives, which are exceptional and this is no exception. It cuts through my thick-crusted bread in a single stroke. Highly recommend this and other members of the Wusthof Culinar line.

5A great knife for slicing bread!

I purchased this knife a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it's performance. I love to make homemade breads and usually use an electric knife to cut them. I finally decided to try a good quality bread knife - this one by Wusthof. It is soooo sharp! It cuts through the bread, crust and all, with no hesitation. All it takes is a gentle sawing motion to cut. Very little pressure needs to be applied because it is amazingly sharp. It works much better than my electric knife and I can use the Wusthof right at the table.I even used it to score an artisan bread crust before baking and it worked very well for that too.I can't imagine any bread knife I would be more pleased with.

5Best knife ever!!

This is, by far, the best kitchen knife I have ever used. The quality is exceptional. This is definately a knife that I will use for the rest of my life and probably pass on to my children, it is that good. I had a hard time with the purchase because of the cost, but I am very glad that I finally purchased it. I since have purchased the paring knife and plan to own the whole collection one day. You will not be disappointed with this product.Update: 6 years later and this knife cuts like the day I purchased it. I have purchased several more Wusthof products over the years, probably the best brand of knife I have ever used. Worth the money.

5Wustof is a keepsake....

I have a preference for the Wustof 8" chef knife. As a chef, the sharper your knife, the safer.(these knives hold up well to daily steeling) I've had my knife profesionally sharpened only twice.(buy a steel, they are worth the money alone in sharpening.) And have cut my fingers a couple of times (never needed stiches though). If you are a petite woman,as I am, please only consider the 8". You can use it from cleaning meat to slicing and serving cake.(please sanitize..) I've had my knife now for 7 years,and used it in a commercial resturant setting every day without a problem, except the servers keep taking it to cut bread:)
