5A fine Dolby Digital Receiver
By Simon Jessey
The STR-DE1075 is an excellent receiver. It packs a considerable punch for the money. One glance at the connection panel at the rear will confirm that you can pretty much hook up anything with it.

Setting up is easy, particularly if you have it hooked up to a monitor or TV, because the on-screen display is very good. Setup can be done via the clearly laid-out front panel, or from the absolutely dreadful remote control. You can specify the size of each speaker, the distance from the listener and other parameters.

The system is designed around a 6.1 Dolby Digital processor. This means that it can handle the rear surround effects channel that has begun to be added to movies recently. A variety of DSP options are available for those people who have awkward speaker placement or for those who just like to fiddle around.

I have just two complaints about the unit. The user guide .... It helps you setup the system but little else. When I spend hundreds of dollars on something, I expect a clear and comprehensive user guide. Many of the receivers facilities are practically ignored and there is no mention whatsoever of the remote control - my other complaint. It is overcomplicated and unattractive.

I must disagree on one point with one of the other reviewers. It is much better, I feel, to use the remote control to go through the setup routine. This allows you to sit in the listening position while you setup the speakers.

As far as sound quality is concerned, I doubt you will find a finer system in this price range. It has more than enough power to cope with most home-based setups and in two-channel mode, it sounds as good as most sub $500 amplifiers.

Highly recommended.

3Sony STR-DE 1075 is Good But ..
By A Customer
The Sony STR 1075 has 6.1 and a host of other features. But, many movies and DVDs are not even in 5.1. The receiver has excellent connectivity options, and automated detection of type of signal. The electronics are sound. For a sophisticated electronic device, I find the user manual very weak. It barely covers the basics, and is not well written. Also, Sony has the idea that crowding the remote with buttons is good. It's not. Many of the buttons are set-up related and should be under a flip-top, not comingled with all the "every day" buttons.

5Excellent Performance Per Dollar
By Mad Dog
If your goal is to get good sound for your home theater without dropping big bucks, take a look at this unit. Granted, a subwoofer of this size with only 50 watts cannot compete with a big system, but if you want deep bass, be prepared to pay a whole lot more. It sounded to me like this system put out a decent level and taughtness of bass down to about 50 Hz and could play fairly dynamically up to 90 or 95 dB. Above that level, the system sounded compressed and the smoothness of the midrange went away. But at a reasonable volume level, the mids are well reproduced and smooth. The controls have adequate sensitivity to allow you to set equalization and surround effects to match your taste for a wide variety of movie soundtracks. This is a bargain.

5THIS SYSTEM ROCKS!!
By Tarek Halaby
As I said in the title "THIS SYSTEM ROCKS".If your room is small go with this Sony. I looked at the Kenwood, to big for my room. Now you can watch your dvds to there fullest (audio wise)when you insert a dvd that has the DTS AUDIO FUNCTION you feel like your right in the movie. Before you start watching a movie and you have this system check out the audio menu and see if there is a DTS AUDIO TRACK and if there is USE IT DON'T ABUSE. I would have like to give it 10stars but Amazon went only up to five

5This drummer thinks it's cool
By J
I'm a drummer in a 5-piece band that plays 2 or 3 times a month. I recently had the opportunity to try out the DD55 and was very impressed. Though I'm not ready to show up at a gig without my conventional set, the DD55 would be great for practicing with headphones or for taking to a rehearsal when I don't want to lug my set. It has a nice feel to it, the sound is good, there are lots of options, and it's just plain fun. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like some of the electronic drums do.

53 reasons I like this drum set
By a novice drummer
1) Perfect for practice. As a non-drummer, buying a full acoustic or digital drumset is too much of a commitment. This little digital set gives a good simulation of the feel of a full kit (with some limitations) for learning new rhythms. Someday I'll buy a full kit but for now this guy will do.

2) Jamming. Sitting around with some friends and some guitars, it is really nice to pull out some backing drum sounds quickly and painlessly. The hand drum sounds are excellent as well for this.

3) Recording MIDI. This guy goes MIDI out to the computer for recording MIDI events and playing them back with the sound card's drumset or anything else you want. As a MIDI drum controller it is very handy. I have also recorded the on-board drum sounds (run through a guitar amp with mild distortion and reverb) and the results were pretty cool.

5For Intermediate Drummers:
By A Customer
I purchased this product about a month ago and I am very pleased with it. The features are amazing and I love the fine tuning details. I've read other reviews that only comment on bad sound quality, but I consider the sound quality to be amazing. Although you can't expect much out of the unit's speakers, headphones or other external sound systems (such as amps) make the sound quality amazing (the speakers are great for practicing though). I've also read that people are unhappy with the low volume of the crash speakers. I addressed this problem by lowering the volume of all the pads except the cymbals, and then just raise the main volume. Many people think that this kit would not be good for a stand alone performance kit. I whole-heartedly agree. That's why I made a set up with my real hi-hat, and my bass drum, and put the dd-55 in the middle. I've played in two concerts like this and it has been a hit. I changed the hi-hat pad into a china cymbal (or a ride bell). I put a splash on the hi-hat pedal and a cowbell (or anything else you want) on the bass pedal. This setup worked great. I also figured out a way to rig the bass pedal so you could hit it with a real bass pedal. In one of the songs, I threw away my sticks and started to play the bongos! Everyone loved it! I'm glad Yamaha made such an affordable proffesional quality drum pad set and I'm sad when I see that most people can't use it to it's fullest potencial!

3"Sony Style?" More like "Doggy Style."
By Tony Ren
I bought into the hype machine that Sony was running up on these headphones too. It was when I saw a beautifully designed Sony website (with pretty Flash animations) entirely devoted to these W.EAR 'phones that I decided that I simply HAD TO get them. "They even came with replaceable caps," I thought. "How cool is THAT?" After I ordered it, I anxiously awaited what I thought would be the next generation of portable headphone design. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that the hype was hardly justified. I returned them within just a couple days worth of testing. The fact is, while Sony may want you to believe that their stylish W.EAR 'phones are comfortable, I found them to be anything BUT. The earpieces are held together by a spring-loaded mechanism, allowing you to adjust the size and theoretically fit any ear. The problem with this idea, though, is that the springs are entirely too strong and continually press against your ear... I had a painful reddish branding on the top of my ears within the first day of usage. If there were a lock of some sort to stop the force of the spring, maybe I wouldn't be complaining about the pain. The other problem with the spring-loaded earpiece is that it's really small and it only grabs onto the TOP of your ear. And because the earphones are so heavy (much heavier than your average pair of in-ear 'buds), they tend to drag your ears down, increasing the distance between the ear and the speakers, thereby decreasing the sound quality. These 'phones are actually quite nice sounding -- that's assuming you cup them to your ears with your hands to keep them in place for any amount of time. And if you're buying these 'phones for the style and look, you may be in for a shock when you find out how awkward and bulky they are. They're much larger than I had imagined. They make you look like you attached two jumbo-size snails to your ears, and the aforementioned "floppiness" effect caused by the weight dragging your ears down certainly doesn't help matters. All in all, I wouldn't go for a jog wearing these 'phones despite what Sony may lead you to believe -- unless you find looking like a basset hound with long flappy ears to be a style statement. Maybe someday the clip-on style will be popular in the portable headphone category, but not before the multitude of design flaws are addressed.

3Not worth the price
By A Customer
I brought my pair of earphones some years back. It was fine for the first 2 years. I realised that the wire that connect the left to the right would work itself loose as time passes. Soon, the ear phone can only work on the left side.

But I thought this was due to normal wear and tear so i brought a newer model from sony recently. the same time happened but this time the right one was ok. And this is only like in 6 months.

I suggest thinking carefully if buying similar types of ear phones. not just sony but other brands too.

5Best set of headphones I ever bought
By A. Prichard
I bought a set of these 8/10 years ago when they were the newest model and they were great. The cord is just the right length that you can use them comfortably on just about anything but a TV. The sound quality was great right up to the day I broke them. And best of all they're WAY durable. I'm murder on headphones since mine go everywhere with me. In the time I've had these I've gone through 2 dozen or more spare sets (one of which was also a Sony) that were only used when I couldn't find these, and they only just broke a few weeks ago. I've been hunting for another set of these specifically since then.

5Great Mid-level Unit With Outstanding Sound & Quality!
By TReno
This is great sounding system. If you have a large living room installation, it isn't right for you, however. Get the next system up from Sony with the powered sub-woofer. That said, if you are going to be using this system in an average size den or entertainment room (like, say 12'x15' or 15'x15') or bedroom, it is perfect!

The system has worked flawlessly for me. Installation was the easiest I have ever done, thanks to Sony's making all connections color-coded. The remote is easy to use and the DVD player has presented no problems. I had a speaker that didn't sound right to me, I call Sony Support, and they sent me a replacement speaker and a call tag for the suspect one, all by next day air!!

4Awesome Sound!!!!
By D S
This home theater really makes you feel like you're in the real movie theater, only without having to leave the house! The Dolby 5.1 sound rumbled through the whole house (even got the dog excited). You'll need to pick up extra cables to hook it up to your satellite system or VCR, and if you have both, get splitters to hook up the TV's audio out to go through the DVD as well (there are only enough ins & outs for two components). Also, if you are mounting your speakers, you'll need two pairs of mounting brackets. The only reason I rated this a 4 instead of 5 was the extra running around I had to do to get the cables and ordering the brackets. Otherwise the system itself sounds great!!

1Highly Overrated
By Steve C
1. To call the remote control unit finicky would be an understatement of note. The buttons are extremely poorly arranged and many are almost too small to press. Furthermore, the buttons are slow to respond requiring a second or third press (you may think you are pressing a button but in fact unless pressed extremely hard, your key-press is not being registered by the unit). Considering that 90 - 100 % of the time the unit will most likely be operated via remote, this is a major drawback and is reason alone to give this system a miss. The range (when used at angles) at which the unit will accept infra-red signal from the remote is also the poorest I have experienced in a remote-controlled appliance.

2. The audio has exceptional clarity with very low levels of distortion but the DVD audio is flat, empty and lacks volume. There is virtually no way to distinguish between the many sound fields which can be selected as they all sound very much the same. In fact the DVD audio on this system could be termed a complete failure. The system fails to deliver a surround sound effect on any settings irrespective of the speaker system layout out and setup being 100% correct. The DVD audio has none of the rich, full cinema sound found in comparable systems.

3. DVD operational features are missing. There is no zoom feature on this system which should be standard on DVD systems. Also, the back/forward scan has only two speeds. The first speed is too slow and the second is too fast to move to the required scene.

4. Upon closing the DVD tray after watching the third DVD, the front panel on the tray came loose. Further inspection showed that this wedge was stuck on with a form of double-sided adhesive tape. This is unacceptable build quality on the part of SONY which I have never before experienced with home entertainment equipment.

At this point I returned the system for a refund.

5Nice picture, nice sound, but...
By Ken
My previous TV, a 25-incher, conked out two days before Thanksgiving. After three days of furious research, I ventured out to my "local" electronics store (8 miles away!) at 8 am the Friday morning after Thanksgiving. I had already decided on a Sony 27" flat-screen and didn't need PIP, so the KV27FS13 was the one. It was rather difficult to judge the quality of the picture in the store; I couldn't get more than five feet away from the set, arrayed as they were down narrow aisles. But the price was right, and I've had a good experience with my Sony flat-screen computer monitor. The punchline: The salesman asked," How many do you want? We have 19 in stock." Ooh. (...)One for every bedroom. As if.

With bungee cords, the box barely fit in the trunk of my Caprice, but I got it home and in the door, courtesy of my trusty handcart.Getting it up on the TV stand with no help proved harder. At 100 pounds and with few right angles for my hands to get a purchase on, it's a big'un. I'm glad I got the in-home repair plan, 'cause I ain't movin' that thing again till it's ready to go to that home theater in the sky.

But enough of all that. You want to know about the picture. Well, it's flat, and there is less glare, but it's a picture. The ugly little secret no one will admit is that picture quality is dependent on many things, none having to do with the flatness of one's TV screen.

This has been brought brutally home to me during the time I've had the set. On the stations with high quality signals, the picture is fantastically bright and clear. I can see the weave in fabrics, the blemishes, laughlines and stretchmarks on actors' skins, the veins on leaves and petals, the scratches and nicks in football players' helmets. Watching certain cable channels, old family videos or clapped-out video-store rentals, however, is an exercise in frustration. I can only compare the experience to trying to read fine print without my bifocals. Our local peacock-network affiliate has multiple ghosts and scratchy sound, as it has for the last three years.

Around back, it's got more plugs and outlets than my stereo receiver. From the looks of them, you could hook up enough speakers to start a second Northridge quake. The cable connection worked, and that's all I cared about.

A few minor quibbles. There's no flat surface on top to rest the cable guide and TV listings. Why bother putting volume, channel, and on-off controls along the top front edge of the cabinet? And the color of that cabinet can best be described as stained-with-a-few-years-worth-of-kitchen-grease-silver. Sony, please. Either make it bright silver or paint it black.

Once you OPEN AND READ THE MANUAL, this TV's onscreen menus are a joy to use. And I have a Sony VCR, so I can use its remote and the TV's remote almost interchangeably. Very nice.

Moms 'n' Dads who use TV as an electronic babysitter will be happy to know that through the use of this Sony's password-prompted parental controls, their progeny can be blocked from seeing anything but G-rated fare, so hopefully they will grow up be model students and upstanding citizens and not stand around smoking and spitting and making noise in front of my house. We shall see.

Watching old CinemaScope movies that have been letterboxed is a much more pleasant experience than on my old 1989 25" bubble-screen. If you do a lot of that, you might want to spring for a 32" flat-screen, but invite some strong friends over for pizza and beer the day you bring it home. It's close to 200 pounds (Yes, I asked while I was at the store.)

Sound? It's head-and-shoulders above that coming from my old TV, whose two integral "stereo" speakers were partially blocked by the housing. I've already tried hooking the TV up to my stereo system using both the back and front audio ports, and the sound is phenomenal. I got a pretty good idea of what surround sound would be like if I ever went that route. Again, the sound is best on newer shows that were in stereo to begin with. Old movies and TV shows(my favorite kind) didn't have clear-as-a-bell sound to begin with, and there's not much improvement in 1950's audio even on a 2001 flat-screen stereo set.

So there you are, folks. If you're going to buy a Wega or any other flat-screen TV, buy it. Wonderful picture, wonderful sound under ideal conditions. But don't expect it to be a cure-all for weak output from the aforementioned sources. If anything, the high-quality display and the relative power of the speakers will exacerbate the flaws in these sources. As we used to say in the bad old days of DOS and the bad new days of HTML, "Garbage in, garbage out."

5Great quality at a reasonable price
By A Customer
Before I made the decision to buy this product, I read a variety of consumer reviews, including Consumer Reports. The reviews gave this product high marks. (Consumer Reports rated this among the top TVs in its category). I was looking for a reliable flat screen TV that would provide excellent picture and sound quality at a reasonable price.

With the Sony KV27FS13 I was not disappointed. After getting some help to get it in place (it is heavy), the connections and setup instructions were a breeze. I am very pleased with the variety of connection options. The S-Video input allowed me to connect my satellite receiver. I can't believe the clear, sharp images. What a difference!

The reviews I read also said that video component input was the way to go to connect a DVD player. I used this connection to hook up my DVD player. The picture quality is superb! I was surprised at the clarity of the sound too. It is the closest thing to watching movies in a theater that you can experience without actually being in a theater.

All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase. I would highly recommend this Sony Wega TV to anyone who is looking for great quality at a reasonable price.

5Excellent flat-screen TV
By L. Hower
Having read a number of glowing reviews, I was not disappointed by my new Sony Wega - this TV is awesome. I compared a number of 27" flat screen TVs from Toshiba, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, & Sony. Of the five, I found the Sony to have the clearest and most vibrant picture. Also, only the Sony and the Samsung have the 16:9 picture modes to display widescreen films with the highest resolution. Digital cable (thru composite video input) looks significantly sharper and more brighter than my old TV and DVDs w/ component video input look stellar. I also have PS2 and games look awesome on the Wega.
