Professional Quality Printer

The Tektronix Phaser 850 DP by Xerox is a professional quality high performance solid ink laser printer.
Instead of using toner and fuser like most laser printers the 850DP uses solid nontoxic ink which comes in specially shaped cubes called "ColorStixs". The solid ink colorstixs are loaded into the top of the printer and can be loaded with the printer on or in the middle of a print job. Each color is shaped uniquely so that a color cannot be placed in the incorrect color well. It is easy as a stapler to reload. Safe and friendly, colorstixs cannot leak or spill. All access is from the front and top, no need to reach behind or rotate around.
The printer is network ready and can be used as a printer server. Installation through the network (connecting it to a LAN hub) or through direct connection to a workstation (using a parallel or USB cable) is very easy and can be fully completed within 15 minutes. The printer includes an installation CD-ROM which must be ran on every workstation that you wish to have access to the printer. The printer's install program, drivers, and administration programs are very stable and well designed so that they are very easy and straight forward even to very novice users.
The 850DP can automatically print double sided pages, labels, envelopes, transparencies, and on card stock. It includes a 200-sheet paper and/or transparency tray. Higher capacity trays are available directly from Xerox.
The printer's print quality is amazing. Up to 1200 dpi means razor sharp text and photo quality color automatically optimized for every element on your page. Thanks to the use of the solid ink technology it's output looks and feels exactly like a magazine page, especially when a high gloss or high brite copypaper is used. Several color correction controls are standard: Automatic: Adjusts colors of photos, graphics, and text automatically for the best color reproduction sRGB Display: Matches your computer monitor Vivid Color: Business presentations, charts, and graphs SWOP, Commercial, SNAP, Toyo, DIC, FujiProof, or Euroscale: Press simulations Black and White: Grayscale printing
It can print a fast 14 ppm (in Fast Color mode); 8 ppm (in Standard mode), Transparencies at 6 ppm (in Fast Color mode); 3.5 ppm (in Standard mode).
Xerox will provide free black ink for the lifetime of the printer! However, you must pay a small shipping charge.

Not for the Occasional User. Great Quality. Low Waste*. Impressive Photos. Have to Leave It On :-(

This is a professional printer, and is basically comparable to the Phaser 840 and Phaser 860. I chose this printer because instead of toner/ink they use solid ink. Basically you buy these cube shaped crayon that melt, and then distributed over paper to produces a superb, smudge free and waterproof prints. The ink is less toxic, in some cases soy based, and the consumables do not produce a lot of waste -more eco friendly.POSITIVES:* great quality prints. Make that superb when set to print photos.* great text printing, and very fast at the draft setting, which is still professionally acceptable for black and white* acceptable print speed at standard settings* double sided printing* works well for both MAC OS X (10.5) and Vista using driver downloads from Xerox* low-waste (see negatives) as inks do not come with metal and plastic pieces you have to discard.* When you purchase original ink blocks, they come with FREE black ink! how nice is that?* Network-able and single connection work just fine* ink is cheaper than inkjets and perhaps a tad less than laser* Though several sites try to sell repair manuals for this, you can get it free directly from Xerox at https://www.office.xerox.com/partners/products/Phaser850/Phaser850Series.html This allows you to repair your own machine.* Able to check print, with security time-out after each print* Able to keep accounting by user/person printing* With the optional second drawer, I don't have to constantly check the paper level like did with my HP Officejet.* Expandable RAM (about $9/64MB if you search online stores), and optional hard drive (about $90) but frankly, i have not spent the time to figure out how to do thatNEGATIVES:* Not very affordable if used in a low volume environment as melted and unused ink is discarded. To avoid this, you have to keep the machine ON all the time. The manual says, keep it at 999 hour time-out, which is the factory setting.* Noise level may be too high for some homes, just as print begins and paper is ejected. Otherwise you have the sound of a fan at all times* Manual feed takes only a single sheet of paper at a time (or envelop)* Long warm-up. It takes about 10-12 minutes for it to warm-up, if off. From idle it is about 3-4 minutes.* Printing a high-resolution picture at the photo setting (file size 4MB/12 Meg Pix) takes about 5 minutes* MAC driver is not as flexible as Vista who offers more tweaks, which other may find necessary, but I don't.SUMMARYThe perfect printer for a busy home office or a small (8-12 person) office.This printer is now only available in reconditioned or used state. Given second hand prices of $200-$500 for one, they are head and shoulders above very flimsy officejet, deskjets, and entry level lasers. If you are going to spend that kind of money for cheap new machine (many of which now force you to change all toners even when they are not exhausted, purely based on print count), then it is worth your while to consider one of these.If you are going to turn you printer on and off once every few days, this printer will not be economical for you -though print quality is still fantastic.

My eyes hurt

O my god, this printer is amassing. The color is very sharp and detailed on plane paper. This printer is in our school computer lab. They say the print speed is like 3.5 ppm on image resolution. But I would say it is about 4.5. It is the best printer I have ever used. It is a high mantance printer because you have you service tray, you will kneed to replace it every once and a wile, and the color sticks coast an arm and a leg but they last a very very long time. The only downside to this printer is the warm-up time. It takes about 15 min. But, there are upsides, like if you own a business, this is the printer because of the great out put and the blazing speed in normal color and b&w. This printer is amazing. It is well worth the money. I am 16 and I have ordered one for myself "after working for months" but I ordered it direct from okidata.
