Outstanding UPS -- with Expandable Battery Capacity!

This product is woefully under-appreciated, and often overshadowed by APC's "non-XL" Smart-UPS models. (For example, the popular Smart-UPS 1500VA, model SUA1500.) The non-XL Smart-UPS models are great products, but they lack one key feature of the XLs: expandable battery capacity.Said expandability allows one to daisy-chain up to 10 (!!!) external battery packs -- model SUA24XLBP, product name "Battery Pack for Smart-ups 24v Black" -- providing an amazing amount of potential runtime!Beyond the expandable battery capacity, the Smart-UPS XL series has all of the same features -- and the same outstanding power filtering/protection -- as the non-XL Smart-UPS models. That includes "line-interactive" operation, which provides true Sine Wave output -- and virtually no delay when switching to backup power. Another notable feature: the Smart-UPS XL series can be used when running on power provided by a backup generator. Inexpensive UPS models cannot!And finally, there is an important thing to know relative to the load capacity of the Smart-UPS XL 1000VA. While this product is rated as providing 1,000 VA (volt-amps) of output power, the "real" capacity is 800 Watts. By comparison, the non-XL-series Smart-UPS 1500VA has a capacity of 980 Watts. The point? The Smart-UPS 1500VA does not have 50% more load capacity as you might expect. And the Smart-UPS XL 1000VA is darn close!The bottom line? You cannot get better power protection -- or more expandability -- without paying significantly more!

Simply outstanding; use it to back up saltwater reef aquarium

This UPS is everything you'd want it to be. I use it for backing up my saltwater reef aquarium. It has a pure sine wave power output, so I have no issues with my reef equipment: pumps, lights, heaters, fans, etc. I bought both the UPS unit which contains batteries, and an additional battery pack, which is also superb. The battery pack simply plugs into the main UPS with one plug, that's it.I never thought I'd use the software, which I feel high-end computer users would use and I know that telecommunications companies use (my former career), but son-of-a-gun, I use it. It's so easy to install on the laptop, then I just connect the UPS to the laptop with an included USB cable, the open the software and it tells me the quantity and duration of power outages, and detailed info on battery life, charge time, etc. It also lets you set parameters such as how many of the extra batteries (if any) you have attached, which is very important in order to understand how much time your equipment can keep running while the power is out. There are plenty of other parameters that can be adjusted, such as alarms, and any type of special protocols the user wants to specify, such as setting the point during a power outage (UPS in use) that the UPS does a soft shut down of it's own components/battery in order to save the battery from being completely drained.It's a great product and I highly recommend it for this VERY alternate use!

Add external battery for OUTSTANDING hold up time - works great

This unit works well, of course. What really sets it apart from lesser brands is that you can buy an external battery for it which increases the hold up time at max load from a few minutes to well over half an hour. APC has a "hold up time" chart on their web site that shows hold up time vs load for the base unit, with one external battery, and with two external batteries. Amazon didn't carry the external battery, so we bought that directly from APC. We really needed the hold up time, so the ability to connect an external battery was required. Works exactly as we hoped.

Stop the presses!

I have used various stones for sharpening knives for (too) many years. In fact, I have reviewed two of them here on Amazon.com. I stand by my positive reviews of the stones, but this 4x10 diamond stone takes it all to a new level. I wanted to try the latest in whetstones, and this one caught my eye because it is LARGE, and has two grits built in. It is also very expensive.

That being said, using this tool will leave you speechless. It is that good. First of all, it is large enough to handle anything from a penknife to a 10" slicer with full coverage in a single stroke. Every whetstone should be this size. It is also thin, and isn't consumed during sharpening. The non slip pad provided with the stone works like a charm. Water is the only lubricant used, and cleanup is a snap.

Don't be fooled by the "fine" and "extra fine" rating of it's surfaces. The fine side will fix a badly worn kitchen edge in a few strokes. My guess is that the knife will also be better than new when you are done. The extra fine side will turn good steel into a razor in just a few more strokes. After years of taking time and care to acheive a perfect edge with natural and man made stones, this was an epiphany. The job was so easy, and the results so fantastic, that I went on a sharpening binge and turned over 15 well used knives into razors in little more than 30 minutes.

I also bought the Global sharpening guides for a couple of bucks. They are not needed for small knives, or for an experienced pro, but they make the fine edge look very uniform on longer blades. They give the "factory" look with the custom edge.

This is an incredible tool. By the way, when you are done, you just rinse it and put it away. I doesn't get any better than this!

planes & chisel sharpening

I purchased this item to sharpen woodworking planes and chisels. Good quality item. Works just as advertised. The larger size allows me to use a Veritas roller jig to keep the blade angle steady (although the jig is not worth the money for other reasons). Water wash off and easy cleaning. The plastic base is worth the extra money IMHO, but the antistick plastic mat works pretty well.

I also used the "scary sharp" system to put a razor sharp edge on the blades. This is a automotive sandpaper on flat plate glass. The DMT fine whetstone is about a 15 micron equivalent where the "sandpaper" goes down to 0.5 micron. The chisel edge shines like a mirror.

My only disappointment was in flattening the backs of old chisels. A coarser grade of diamond is needed for this higher metal removal technique. I tried coarse grade sandpaper, but it wore out quickly. The finer sandpaper grades do not because they only recieve 5-10 strokes after the diamond stone.

For knives and general sharpening utensils, this diamond plate is great. For woodworking, I would buy the coarse / x-fine combination whetstone. Use the coarse side for the one time flattening and the fine or x-fine side for the intermediate surface grinding. Keep one 9"x12" glass plate of really fine micron sandpaper for the final polish.

Great stone

I researched quite a bit before buying a stone & a steel and I am glad I did.Oil Stones? forget em they are messy and not nearly as good as the Japanese water stones they wear down and they are slow.Have a hardness of around 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale and on good knives that have a Rockwell hardness 56-60 and up to 66 they just dont cut it.Water stones? these are good do a fine job, need to be soaked in water for a few mins, no mess but a good quality Japanese water stone will cost just as much if not more as this diamond stone and most are single grit, they also wear down rather quickly and become useless until you flatten them back out and what do you flatten them with? A big Diamond stone! or Aluminum oxide sand paper like maybe 120-220 grit glued to a piece of glass, which BTW makes a fairly decent sharpening stone on its own (in finer grits 800-2000) that are better than the oil stones.These are made of Aluminum Oxide in a resin bond, aluminum oxide has a hardness of 9.2 (Mohs) these work better on good knives. These also need to be dried before storing them or they will deteriorate much quicker.Ceramic Stones? These are good, dont need to be soaked and wont wear out as fast as regular water stones as they are in a "ceramic bond" instead of resin, these are either aluminum oxide or silicon carbide, the carbide is slightly harder at 9.5These stones will still wear down just not as fast as the regular resin bond water stones.Both resin bond and ceramic water stones rarely if ever come larger than 8X3" (I have yet to see one, if they exist they would be even more expensive).This is the only non-diamond stone I would recommend and even then just for a super fine 5000-8000 grit to hone & polish the blade.Diamond stones? Well this is the only way to go as far as im concerned, no mess at all and if you use water on it the water fills in the pockets and the blade just glides over the stone and stays constantly lubed and cleaned.These stones cut faster than any other stone have a hardness of 10 (Mohs) and stay flat these are perfect for good steel knives especially the 60-66 (Rockwell) hardness.The 2 best features of these stones are they stay flat and they are 10X4" which you just cant beat, it gives you nice long easy strokes.Properly taken care of by the average home kitchen user just sharpening his/her small quiver of knives and in between using a fine steel this stone should last decades.Using a fine steel everytime you use your knife you should only need to use your stone just a few times a year.I would suggest this stone DMT 4"X10" Extra Fine & Fine with the Duobase holder which makes it easier to use, then a fine steel like the "F. Dick 11" Multicut Sharpening Steel" which I got here at Amazon also, using this steel makes a HUGE difference and keeps my knife razor sharp.If you want the perfect polished razor sharp edge also get a Global Ceramic Whetstone, Fine Grit (5000grit) then finish it off with a "Leather Strop" glued to a wooden paddle with a bit of very fine metal polish like white jewelers rouge or flitz and you will have a truly razor sharp and long lasting edge.

Yet another great APC product

I own many APC UPSes, from the relatively high end (i.e., like this one) to the relatively 'normal' levels. All seem incredibly well built. Before buying a UPS understand why APC has these various offerings, and try to understand which you might need. I wouldn't want my more critical servers ideally on anything below the Smart UPS series (they tend to have a pure sine wave output, along with a much more tightly regulated output). The Backup Pro series is a minor step down from the Smart UPS, in that it sacrifices pure sine wave output. The Backup series (non-pro) still has a very nicely regulated output, but is not quite as tightly controlled as the Pro series (nor of course does it have pure sine wave output).

APC sells serious stuff, at all levels, for very real reasons.

Heavy iron

Does exactly what it's supposed to do, I've used a lot of APC products for work server farms. This purchase was for home use and it was a great buy for the power. The only downside is the weight, which is quite heafty, but is not a problem unless you have to move it; which isn't very often.

exelent lightning protection

this battery backup is defanantly worth the money and have by far paid for themselvs. i have 4 of these units. one on my tv, one on my computer, and one on my audio equiptment, then the other running various electronics like cellphone charger, lamps, clocks, cordless phone and such. recently we had a huge thunderstorm and lighting hit a utility pole just down the road and i heard this loud snap from all the outlets then all the lights went out. i thought for shure everything was fried. but with great supprize everything connected to these units were working flawlesly. my $1500 computer never skipped a beat and my $5000 entertainmend system never had one problem. the run time on these are exelent i had about an hour on my computer and plenty of time to watch a full movie on my 56" tv with my surround sound. later i checked out where the lightning hit the pole, it literaly blew the transformer off the pole. i most defanantly reccomend these units to others. something else i wanted to add is these units work well off of my portable 4000 watt generac generator, though you may have to adjust the sensitivity to medium but they will work well.

NOT FLAT

this stone was not flat. when i put it on a glass surface, one corner sticks up. that makes it useless for sharpening, which bad because this is a 'sharpening stone' and has no other function. it should at least be manufactured in such a way that it does what its made to do...UPDATE - I did get a replacement from Amazon and have been using the two sided stones (extra course/course + fine/extra fine) with excellent results. I see no reason to try any other brands or sharpening systems. I suggest you confirm that you get a 'flat' stone by putting it on a glass table to make sure it sits flush on all corners. Once you confirm that it is indeed a flat surface, then its a great tool.

DuoSharp means "WOW"

I bought this sharpening stone to obtain a "like new" edge on my worn edge chisels. I tried my wet stone electric grinder; however, I was not happy with the results. With my new DuoSharp, I obtained the edge on my 2" chisel within a short time (it was very dull!). I plan on buying the Duosharp fine and very fine sharening stone soon. Thanks DMT for such a fine product.

Best bench stones ever.

DMT products are all top-notch and this is one of their best. Extra-Coarse takes material off so fast you need to be careful not to overdo it. Great for major reshaping of blades or starting fresh on a badly knicked edge. Buy the base and the Extra-Fine/Fine stone as well and you can sharpen all kinds of stuff.

It Buzzes

After less than two weeks of operation, the unit began to buzz very annoyingly. (Anyone remember what a 60 cycle hum sounds like? It was like that.) The only way to get the buzzing to stop was to physical unplug it from the wall. I called APC support an was told these units "can have an audible hum" and that any replacement unit would probably give me the same problem.I returned the unit today, as the noise was driving me crazy. Note: You have to contact a human at [...] to do so as their online return system does not work if you got stuff via Amazon. Let's see if I get the refund.I'm giving it two stars, rather than just one, because it did at least work with my computer, which is more than I can say for the last one.

I got 1 of these for each of our 2 servers. They outlasted the 1st pair of servers. Using the software, when there's a power outage, it sends you an email with the time and another email when power returns. These units both expired within a few weeks of each other. NOTE: When the warning starts beeping and the light says to replace the battery, do it! I waited 2-3 weeks and the one battery swelled up and wedged inside the case so I can't replace just the battery. The swelling comes from trying to charge a dead battery. It's $160 for battery replacement and $360 for whole new unit. I think the "smart" alludes to the emails and if I remember right, it selectively shuts down your server so it doesn't just stop when the battery runs out in a power failure. If you don't want those features, a 1000VA with 600w by APC is $130. But that means if you're not around during the power failure when the battery runs out, you now have another sudden power failure, so what's the point of the battery? I've been told another advantage of a UPS is that they are better at protecting against surges. Power strips are less effective by way of their design.

APC- Battery Backup

I have had other APC battery backup's in the past, and the only negative comment about the product is the size and space required for the unit. Given our power failures, brown out, and the high wind and storms in our area the APC does an excellent job. I have not only my desktop PC, but my scanner, printer and digital camera on the system and it has saved my equipment numerous time for the power surges and failures.

Great to sharpen handplanes and chisels

I've been using this stone as one of many to sharpen my chisels and handplanes. I've found that they remove material quickly and they take longe r to clog probably because of the small holes they have. I'm pretty happy with this stone and would definitely buy again.

As a hard core "conventional stone" user for the last 30 years, I was amazed at the ease, simplicity and accuracy of this diamond benchstone. No more oil mess for me! Sharpening requires a lot less strokes than conventional stones and fewer grits to deliver a finer edge. Several strokes per side should do it! I still recommend the leather strop to finish.

Great Telcom Rack

I bought this for my home. This is my first rack purchase. Prior to this, I've never rackmounted my server or network hardware, but I wanted to start doing so because it's more compact and cleaner looking.Currently, I have 3x3U center mounted servers at the bottom, then all my networking equipment about half way up. This includes a managed gigabit switch, a wire management insert, a 2U pfsense router/firewall, then 2 shelves for a cable modem and the wireless access point. I also have a 1U PDU.This leaves me plenty of room to expand, of course. The rack, as I have it loaded, is plenty sturdy. Having the servers at the bottom helps keep the main weight low, which keeps it steady. There is next to no risk of it falling over in this configuration. If this is used in a real telcom location, there are also holes to bolt it to the floor, but I did not have this ability in my current living situation, and it wasn't necessary to do so, either.I'd recommend this for the home for a low-cost rack mounting solution. Same with an office setting. If necessary in the future, I can always buy a second one and make it into a 4-post rack, as well.

Nice rack!

Other reviews have pretty much covered it. Good, solid rack. Nice finish. It is aluminum so surprisingly light. I have it set on concrete floor which is not smooth. I have it loaded at the top with a 1U TOR switch and a rackmount power strip/surge supressor. Slightly above waist level I have installed a shelf and placed a flatscreen monitor on the shelf. A couple of inches below that (approx 45" off the floor) I have a server on rails (which I'm using for my keyboard tray :-) and directly underneath that another 1U switch. Finally, sitting on the base I have a couple of PCs. The rack wobbles due to the rough floor, but it exhibits adequate stability. I highly recommend this for SMB or home. And, as others have stated, the pack of screws taht comes with it is handy, especially rackmount screws that I've used on job sites did not fit well.

Great rack for the price

This is a great rack for the price especially with the free amazon shipping. It was very easy to put together. As there are only 6 bolts on each side holding it together there is some wiggle room back and forth if you push but once you have weight on the rack it doesn't move. I put almost 150 lbs of network equipment and servers on the rack with no problems. What I found really nice was all the extra mounting screws they gave you in the kit. I see myself buying another one once I have the need.

Good Buy

I have, for the past ten or so years, been a professional writer with over fifty short stories published, and two novels. When I saw this typewriter on Amazon.Com, I was shocked to see such a wonderful model going for such a small price. Daisy Wheel typewriters provide a long life, durability, and good quality production. Not to mention that it came with free shipping. And on a ten pound item, you will pay more than you would like for shipping and handling. This has several features that save a lot of time, and a lot of repeating, frustrating motions. The only thing better than the great deal our friends at amazon have given us is this: With a high Yeild Nylon Ribbon, it flows like a stretch of silk. I am currently half way through my next book, coming to about four-hundred pages as of now, and I am still on the same ribbon I started with. One High-Yeild ribbon is good for about 80,000 characters. If you are a student, this is a nice buy, and cheaper than buying a computer and a printer. If you are a writer like me, then you might hit it big on this one. In closing, you should grab these up, because the free shipping won't last forever, and I know all of my friends will want one. So, here's to you, Amazon, for this great model at an affordable price.

Nice Typewriter for the Average Person

I am a very nostalgic person...thought my daughter would get a kick out of using a typewriter like the one I learned on in the 70's. Well, I bought this one for her and she loves it. Of course, it is very different typing on this as compared to a pc. It is also different than typing on a more expensive or more professional daisy wheel. For the price, it is a good typewriter and a good value.

Good Typewriter

I need a typewriter because I do a lot of work with NYC agencies that still use paper forms. As someone who has never used a typewriter in their life, I found this typewriter easy to use.The typewriter is small, light and manages to fit into the corner of my office without being obtrusive. Despite it's small footprint, it types well and does not come across as flimsy or cheap. The buttons on the keyboard are easy to press and spring back nicely. The clicking is heavy and may be too loud for some people. I personally find the clicking sound very satisfying.I really like the white-out function. I am prone to make typos and the white-out does a really good job in erasing the errors I make. There is a guide built in to the typewriter that helps me type on the lines. I now use this typewriter to type out stuff on envelopes, checks, etc. I find it very easy to use it for quick, small typing jobs.

Great, but overpriced

The idea of a multifunction printer, scaner, fax, etc., is a good idea, but this implementation is cludgy and overpriced. To start, the base model does not include fax capabilities, which you must add later for an additional cost.

All in all, the Brother MFC-8820DN is a much better value (around $600) and has everything included.

Great WorkGroup MFP, wish they still made them like this!

I bought my HP 4100 MFP in June 2003. This is a small office, with 4 people printing on it every day; many jobs hundreds of pages each. Never jammed. Always dependable. Envelope feeder flawless! Plus scanning and faxing in and out. It finally died today. Over the years, maybe $400 in maintenance and repair costs. A great value! Just bought another, and will reuse the fax module, envelope feeder and extra paper trays.
