4Tim Robertson MyMac.com Review
By Tim E Robertson
My first impression upon seeing the 2100 series speaker from Altec Lansing was "sweet!" Yes, I like the look of these speakers, but looks are but one of the many important factors into making your decision on what speakers to buy.

Sounds quality, I hope, is the number one factor. In that regard, the 2100's sound great. While not as loud as the ... Monsoon PlanarMedia 9 speakers, they do have about the same clarity of sound. That is to say, very good in both audio reproduction and imaging.

The 2100 series are a three-piece speaker system, consisting of two satellite speakers, and one powered sub-woofer. Like most other computer speaker systems, this one also has a remote control (wired) that has a Mute button, as well as two volume controls. Nice, but what I especially enjoyed was the metal stand the remote control rests on. This may seem a small thing, but not after you have had to deal with the remotes on most other computer speakers, which usually lay on the desk. The remote stand shows forethought on Altec Lansing's part.

The satellite speakers are very small, half the size of the Monsoon speakers reviewed a few weeks ago. If you have a cluttered desk, and a pair of large flat-panel speakers would have a hard time finding a home on your desk, take a look at these. Each speaker is set into a metal stand, making them harder to accidentally move. Even with the metal stand, the speakers are still tiny.

They say good things come in small packages. This is proven true here, as I was really impressed with the sound quality of the two desktop speakers. The sub-woofer is equally great sounding, but is anything but small.

The sub-woofer sports not one, but two 4" speakers, which do a respectable job of reproducing low base sounds. The sub is made from sturdy, well-crafted wood. They are also ported, meaning better bass response.

Obviously, ... speakers are not going to rival a home entertainment system in pure volume, clarity or base, but the sound level the average computer user will listen to the 2100's at will not be disappointed.

Specs:Power: 35W RMS ‹ 50 WATTS total peek power. (Look for distortion when pushing anything close to their peek.)Front Speakers: 5.5W/Channel at 4 ohms.Subwoofer: 17.5W at 4 ohms.

Overall impression: I like these speakers! If I were doing a head-to-head comparison with the aforementioned Monsoon's, I would have to give the Monsoon speakers a slight edge in sound quality. In workmanship, the winner would be the Altec Lansing 2100.

A good value speaker that sounds more expensive than they are. A true audiophile will want to look elsewhere, and spend more money. For the average computer user who wants better sound than the built-in speakers on your computer, these will make you smile.

MacMice Rating: 4 out of 5

4very nice. Volume control is annoying
By B. Hoogerbrugge
The 2100's replaced an old set of Altec Lansing speakers I've had for years. These new ones are much nicer to look at, and provide plenty of clean sound for gaming and music. The tweeters have almost zero mid-range though, and the subwoofer doesn't provide much either, so you end up with a lot of highs and lows. The tweeters are very lightweight, and I find myself knocking them down now and then as I move things around on my desk--no big deal.

On the downside, the speakers come with a clunky wired remote for power and volume control. This adds extra wires coming from your desktop, and the volume control is NOT rotary, which I dislike. The rotary control is the most intuitive for volume, and you can tell at a glance what your volume setting is. Instead, we get two buttons for the volume, which provide NO visual feedback as to what the current volume is, nor what the min/max volume is. Additionally, if you turn the power off to the speakers, they RESET themselves to the minimum volume. Every time I turn the computer on, I have to crank the volume up 15 notches or so. If you leave the power on to the speakers at all times, you won't find this to be a problem. One final gripe is about the bass control--it is located on the back of the subwoofer, quite out of reach.

If you are in the habit of leaving the power on regularly, you will have no problem with these speakers and you'll enjoy the cool look and pretty sound. Otherwise, if you are as picky as I am, and are willing to settle with some less "cool" looking speakers, you might think about heading toward something else.

2Not Designed With Me In Mind
By TOL
So, first, let me get this out of the way: These speakers sound great. The bass is powerful and punchy while the small and very attractive speakers deliver a crisp high end. Mid-range does suffer a bit in larger spaces, but probably only to the very discerning listener. I replaced my clunky Yamaha YST-MS50 system with this one and, as far as the sound goes, I find the 2100's to be very comparable.

OK, so why give it 2 stars? Well, it has everything to do with the design of these things. Altec Lansing has successfully taken a potentially great product and ruined it with terrible controls. The remote, in my opinion, is completely useless. It features a power button and two volume buttons. Now, assuming you have the speakers plugged into the same outlet strip as your computer, most users will shut the speaker system down with the computer system. This makes sense to me. The problem is that whenever you bring power back to the system, you must manually turn on the power button on the remote and re-adjust the volume to a normal level. The default for this system is for it to be OFF and at VERY low volume. The only workaround to this is to keep the speakers powered on all the time. But this, to me, makes very little sense. When I turn my computer on, I expect to hear sound. Well, you don't with the 2100's.

My second gripe has to do with the fact that this system has no headphone jack. This is a major inconvenience when using the computer late at night.

My third gripe has to do with the fact that you have no idea what volume you are listening to. The remote, as I said, features two volume buttons but with no visual display telling you where you are at. This just goes against my natural tendency to want to know what volume I am listening to relative to the system's capabilities.

My last gripe has to do with the design of the speakers. I have no complaint with the subwoofer as it is very slim, compact, and well protected. However, the satellites have fully exposed speaker cones that are barely protected by only a thin vertical strip of metal. I had to move these speakers well above ear-level in order to keep them away from the stray hands of my young child.

So, overall, the system is great sounding, attractive, and completely user-unfriendly. Just not enough, in my opinion.....

5HD580 against the Grado
By InverseIQ
Firstly, I want to mention that this is the 7th headphone I have purchased. I have/had the Grado RS1, 325i, Westone UM2, Grado SR80, SR60 and Sennheiser HD497. For this revew, I am basically going to compare it to the Westone UM2, Grado 325i and Grado RS1.!. The Comfort: The comfort level of this headphone is outstanding. For short durations of up to 2 hours, it is second to the Westone UM2 (IEM). But since I find wearing an IEM without custom ear mould not comfortable more than 2 hours, the HD580 is the winner here. Coming from the Grado, I find the circum aural (covering the entire ear) design of the Sennheiser a welcome change. The headphones was once (when it was released) regarded as on of the most comfortable headphones, so you really cannot go wrong with this one.2. Construction: Overall.. Excellent construction. Though my plastic Grill is not cosmetically perfect, it made of a hard plastic and will withstand daily strenuous use. The headphones feels very sturdily build and backed up by Sennheisers 5 year warrantee if purchased from an authorized dealer, you can have a very pleasing usage for many many years to come.3. Sound :-)..: THE MOST IMPORTANT CATEGORY: I am going to divide this into sub-points:(a) For Slow Rock like U2, Scorpions, Rainbow, Pearl Jam, Morphine, Little River Band, Eagles etc, it really boils down to your personal preference. Though I would say that most people the Grado RS1 will easily outperform the HD580, it should be noted that the RS1 is $550 more expensive. Having said that, I can still imagine many people preferring the Sennheiser sound signature. If you haven't ever listened to a Grado or a high end Sennheiser, Byerdynamic, AKG etc before and if you are coming from a Bose or other low quality headphones, you can be assured that the HD580 will blow you off right of your feet. I am a fairly critical listener and have spend more than $2500 on headphone related gear and I can assure you that for $150, I would doubt if the HD580 has any serious rivals.I hate pop music, but I can imagine that it will fit in this section.(b) For Metal & Hard Rock: Seriously, if this is your category of primary interest, then you really really ought to get yourself a Grado instead. I have read many folks claim that they are very satisfied with the Sennheiser performing Metal and Hard Rock.... With all sincerity I can assure you that those are mostly folks have not owned a higher Grado or very rare people with very rare kind of music taste. Personally, I cannot stand the HD580 playing Metal, not even for one song.. may be I because I have been thoroughly spoiled by the Grados :-(.... :-). Again, if you have not owned any of the above mentioned high end headphones, you may be happy with the HD580... but if you really want real adrenalin flow for this genre of music, you have to get a Grado.(c) Classical - Yanni, Mozart, Beethoven etc...: This is the definitive category that the Sennheisers have been made for. The HD580 makes even the $700 Grado RS1 sound like a joke. I never imagined that I liked classical so much before this HD580. Man.. I can go on and on how well the HD580 performs in this genre... its simply almost perfect, probably beaten by only the HD600 or the HD650. Without dispute, Classical is Sennheisers home ground that I doubt if any other brand dare challenge.(d) Drivability: Although the HD580 can be driven to satisfactory volume using mediocre devices like PC soundcard etc. for this kind of high end headphones should be considering some sort of headphone amplification. After all you want to get the best out of your high end headphone.OVERALL: The HD580 should satisfy almost any audiophile, but its far from being perfect. As I mentioned above, its strengths comes with some weakness too. When stacked against with the Grado SR325i, I would be 50-45, that is 55% inclining towards the 325i. This is also considering that the 325i costs $300, almost double of the HD580. This could completely change if you listen more to Classical. For a Classical fan, the HD580 is a hands down winnerWhen stacked up against the Grado RS1, for me it is a 80-20. That is 80% inclined towards the Grado RS1, despite its $700 price tag... The wooden RS1 is simply too musical and in all genre except Pure-Classical, the RS1 beats the HD580 by a fairly large margin. When stacked up against the Westone UM2: :-) Well, there is no comparing an IEM with a full sized can. An IEM will find it really hard to outperform a full sized can.In conclusion, this a Headphone that deserves 5 starts without exception... particularly when considering it costs only $150 or so. IF you listen to lots of music, your ears will thank you for getting this.

5I Didn't Know Music Sounded This Good
By John J. Robinson
I had a pair of Fostex T20 Headphones that I used for playing video games and listening to DVDs late at night. They sounded really good too. The only problem is that the were really uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of having them on.So I decided to try the open air type headphones. My father got an Alien-Ware computer that came with the Sennheiser 570s. I had tried them on and thought they sounded good, so I eventually bought a pair at the high end electronic shop here in town. But after paying 80 bucks I decided they didn't sound much better than my Fostex headphones and eventually returned them.So I did some online technical research and discovered the 580s actually had technical specs that were well beyond that of the Fostex or 570s. You can look it up yourself on Sennheisers website. Then I started reading review after review after review of these 580s that were all just absolutely glowing. This many people can't be wrong, so I bought a pair online.Let me just say that I didn't know music sounded this way! WOW!! I can hear each pluck of the guitar! Every single thump of a drum... its hard to describe. I feel like I am standing on stage with the musicians while they are playing in front of millions. You can pont to exactly where every single musical instrument is located in space. And the beauty of the human voice has never been so magnified before to my ears! These headphones were worth every red cent that I paid and then some. What price can be put on the true crystal clear reproduction of music? I have never heard it this good on ANY system.

5best buy in terms of quality/price
By H. Wang
Yeah, there are better headphones in terms of quality in this universe, but sold at the cost of your arm and leg. The HD580 really shines when you get audiophile quality sound at a bit over $100 (I bought mine at $130).The phone delivers silky and solid feeling sound in all frequency ranges I can hear. Listening music from this headphone could become an addiction. The con side? I found almost all computer sound cards should be thrown into junk yard since the headphone reveals all kinds of weekness (dullness, flatness, etc.) in the sound decoding and amplification. In other words, if you mainly use computer sound card for your music, don't bother buying this headphone. It will ruin your feeling. A $10 headphone is a right match. The headphone has no trouble driving my portable CD player (I use a SONY D345 which is a very old model) since the player delievers ample power. Nowadays portable CD players delivers less power to headphone so it may sound weak on these CD players. But don't blame HD580, just blame these manufacturers - deliever a CD player with better sound and power!Another issue is the headphone enclosure gives plastic feeling which does not really suit its quality sound. I wish Sennheiser could design a better looking one. But hey, a headphone's most important task is to deliever quality sound, and HD580 certainly delievers 5 stars. The final issue may be this headphone may be liable for thefts due to its popularity. My HD580 was stolen some months ago - someone might really like this and took it for free without my consent. I am looking for HD595 which is the supposedly next version from Sennheiser. But really miss HD580.

4Wonderful Item
By elamcrosley14
I recently purchased the Compaq Ipaq 3870 for personal organization purposes. I also have a Samsung Infuse android, which I purchased just last November, and honestly, so far I am enjoying the almost ancient Ipaq 3870 far more than the android. Being a teenager, I always wanted one of these as a little kid. My mother had a Palm Zire21, and I always admired that thing. I bought my 3870 really just for the heck of it, but never guessed that it would be as useful as it is. I like the fact that it is very similar to a pc interface, and the speed is amazing. I would deffinately suggest purchasing one if you are considering it. I think you will be truly amazed. It is a wonderful piece of equipment for the price, and I would take it over some $500-$700 android anyday.

3Not exactly what I ordered
By judge
I ordered the cartridges here because the price was so much less (about a third) than the rest. I should have known there was a reason, but the picture showed a new box just like I had purchased from other places in the past, also the ad said new & the seller had good ratings. When I received the boxes they were generic & had a label stuck on them, written on the label in ink was AL100TD,not AL110TD as pictured in the ad, also printed on one of the cartridges itself it said that it was a starter cartridge & would not last but approximately a third of the time,(sound familiar?), that a full replacement cartridge would. While these seem to work just fine in the copier if they weren't a new full size replacement then the customer deserves to know. As usual you get what you pay for.

2Didn't work as I expected
By Freddy Garrido
This is supposed to be an authentic Sharp toner. In order to make it work I have to keep shaking it regularly. Some how the printer read as an empty toner. I didn't have that kind of problem with previous toners. If someone can explain the reason for this thing to happens I would appreciate it. Thank you.

5Turns heads while pleasing your own
By Jacob A. Boxer
Sometimes, when I'm walking around and I see people with CD players, I just have to wonder how they manage.

The most amazing thing about this device is the size. Not just the size of the iPod itself, which is a lot less than half the size of other MP3 players that hold the same amount, but the amount of space it saves you in terms of CDs. Have you ever seen one of those CD towers with around 60-70 CDs in them? You know, the ones that are as tall as a bookshelf? How would you like to carry that around in your backpack at school or in your pocket on the street? I think carrying this thing around, which happens to be the size of a deck of cards and holds even more than those CD towers, is slightly preferrable.

The next best thing about the iPod is the batteries. This thing goes for 8-10 hours without quitting. That is the same amount of time as a CD player, and twice as long as other multi-GB mp3 players. In addition to that, you never need to buy batteries again. Just plug the iPod into the wall at night and you've got another 10 hours of music when you wake up. That'll work even if you only sleep for 3 hours a night like me! So this thing is saving both space and money (batteries)!

The third thing about this is how well it turns heads. Sometimes I try to hide this thing when I take it out, because strangers will literally come up to me and ask me "is that an iPod?" and want to play with the buttons and stuff. Sometimes, it gets a little annoying. In these cases, the size comes in handy because its very easy to hide while you are using it. But if your in the mood to turn some heads, just put this thing on your lap and play.

There are tons of other great things about this. The interface is beautiful... sometimes, I just stare at the screen while a song is playing, or turn on the backlight for fun. It takes 10 minutes to fill the entire thing, meaning that if you ever get tired of the songs you put on it, you can have them replaced in the snap of a finger.

But it all comes down to this; when you buy this, you will never need another music player again. If you have a Mac, go buy this. The money you save on batteries and future music players will more than make up for the ... price tag.

5Using iPod with Windows

Works like a champ with Windows using XPlay software..., but you'll have to buy a firewire card for your PC. Some apparently work better than others- recommend you check out the mediafour site for notes on the cards they recommend as working before you buy one.

5iPod is best
By Andrew R.M. Steele
This review is for Windows users. With the use of XPlay I was able to finally purchase the state of the art in portable music - the i-Pod. Prior to this purchase I had paid around $400 for a Neo Jukebox which, though its HD is much larger, is clunkier, never worked correctly, was replaced, and then went bad again. The i-Pod arrived this afternoon. After allowing enough time to charge the battery, I downloaded 233 tunes from my WIN98 OS computer to the unit in 10 minutes! All work seamlessly. The i-Pod is a joy of design and handling. I highly recommend its purchase for any user of Windows; just don't forget to download XPlay as the cross platform application. Great. Great. Great.

4Lousy quality AND customer service
By A Customer
I bought this pool last summer, followed all directions, kept the pool in sparkling condition, but when I went to use it this year, it has sprung three leaks so far! I contacted Intex, and they said, "We can't guarantee that the vinyl won't crack or split when it's exposed to sunlight"!!!! Oh, I didn't realize that I was supposed to set up this pool inside! Give me a break! I will NEVER purchase another Intex product if this is the kind of quality and customer service they provide. BUYER BEWARE. . . .

5Great purchase for the price
By A Customer
We have only had the pool for 3 days, but so far we LOVE it. It was very easy to set up! This pool was a great price because it comes with a ladder, filter, tarp for the ground, pool cover, skimmer and vacuum for the pool. Even though the 10' pool is much less expensive, I don't think it comes with all of these extras. We're looking forward to using the pool a lot this summer. I will be able to lay on a raft while by kids swim. It will also be a great way to teach my 3 & 5 year old to swim as they will still be able to touch the ground and not be so intimidated. I'm looking forward to a fun summer.

5Great if you do not want the expense of a above ground pool!
By Mother of 3
We are on are 2nd easy set 15 foot pool. Our other pool lasted two seasons and then the top ring had some leaks. This has been a great purchase for our now 4 and 7 year olds. Be sure and keep an extra filter on hand and soak in bleach water when not in use and run the pump 24 hours a day in order to keep the water maintained. You need to check the chlorine daily and add chemicals; we use a local pool store to give me directions on how to keep the water clear and safe.I would recommend this pool to everyone. The only draw back . . . Being the 3rd year in putting up, it takes about 2 hours and some sand in order to get it level. If you do not get it level and you have active children, the top ring will flip over and cause a huge waterfall effect. Take the time to level.

5a firey wonder
By rebecca reed
This is an amazing puzzle. The detail and specifics to this puzzle will wonder the mind. It doesn't matter how many times you look at this puzzle or how long you look at it you'll never see the same thing twice. There are so many different ways to look at this amazing puzzle. The creator paid extreme attention to detail and the idea of the old century dragons and the idea that they were the ultimate warriors...You can see everything from castles to soldiers, to many smaller dragons on the inside of this puzzle. If you love dragons or mystical creatures this puzzle is a must have.

5Great puzzle!
By Meggers
This puzzle was great and looks wonderful once it is put together. It really is a challenge but it is so worth it at the end. I am now planning on buying the "Ice" dragon puzzle as well.Edit- 09/10/2008- Don't try and find a frame for this one, it is just too expensive. Instead I bought a 30x40 piece of thin plywood, glued black vinyl over it and then glued the puzzle on to the vinyl. I spent about 30 bucks (including the special hanging attachment I had to buy) instead of the 300 that Michaels wanted to charge me.

5Definately a winner in my book
By S. Thomas
There were dimensions on the box, however finding a frame large enough to fit around it proved to be more difficult than the puzzle itself. Aside from the special ordered 30 x 40 frame, this was challenging but not impossible puzzle. When it was finished, I think we had as much fun looking at all the hidden little details as we did putting it together. VERY large and space consuming, but worth it very much when you see the end result.
