5Lots of fun!
By A Customer
My husband and I bought this for our 2 1/2-year-old daughter and she absolutely loves it! She plays in it every day. We liked the idea of natural look so it would not stand out like a sore thumb in the backyard. It is big enough to hold my daughter and two of her friends. She also has a 6-year-old cousin who loves to play in it. They play for hours in it. The sides have little blocks on the corners for the kids to sit while in the sandbox and they are sturdy enough for an adult to sit on. The cover is high and rounded at the top so we are able to store all of her sand toys in the box. We are very happy with this purchase and would recommend this Step 2 product to anyone looking for a sandbox for young children.

5Safe Sand
By 20YrTrader
Great sand pit! However buy safe sand. There are 4 grades of sand(Fill, plaster, masonary, and Play) and only one grade is suitable for children's sand boxes:play sand. It should be silica free (depending on the state you live in) and is often sterilized. For this reason it is more expensive than the fill sand that is sold in the hardware store.

Crystalline silica, a colorless mineral, also called quartz, is an ingredient in sand, exposure to crystalline silica dust can cause lung diseases such as silicosis, inhaling airborne crystalline silica dust also has been associated with other diseases such as tuberculosis and lung cancer.

5Great sand box - be careful about buying sand!
By DonnaC
I want to thank M. Beatrice for planting the seed in my mind about "safe" play sand. I read the review, bought this sand box for my one-year old daughter and went to Home Depot to buy Play Sand. The label said it was specifically for use in sandboxes and washed, filtered, etc., so I bought four bags. When I was unloading it at home, the red warning label caught my eye "Warning: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer". I couldn't believe it, so checked the sand manufacturer's website [...] and sure enough, it's silica sand, known to cause cancer. Good grief and it's legal to sell this stuff for children's sand boxes?Yes, it's cheap, less than $20 for 200 lbs. But what price do we put on our kid's health? Back it goes and I begin my search for exorbitantly priced "safe sand". (For ideas, type in "safe play sand" in your search engine.) But who cares? At least I won't have to worry about my daughter spending hours playing in a toxic pit! Thanks again, M. Beatrice....

5Outstanding stereo receiver.
By D. R. Schryer
Despite the current fad for multi-channel audio/video receivers, the majority of people still listen to music with two speakers and only need a two-channel stereo receiver to drive them. I'm one such person and -- as a fanatic audiophile -- this is the receiver I use. It is a superb receiver in all respects. Some people may think that they need more than this receiver's rated power of 80 watts per channel, but Yamaha's power ratings are extremely conservative and this receiver will drive virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which I don't recommend doing). More important than it's ample power is its very low distortion. It's difficult to find any brand of receiver with as low distortion as this Yamaha. In addition to robust power and ultra-low distortion the RX-596 has a full complement of controls, plus an easy to use remote. But as a fanatic audiophile the feature I particularly appreciate is a button which sends the signal from my CD player directly to the amplifier -- bypassing the preamp circuitry, which is not needed when playing CDs -- for the lowest distortion and best signal to noise ratio. There are plenty of less expensive stereo receivers available but none with the performance and quality of this quite reasonably priced Yamaha.

Cheap Yamaha P80 88-Key Graded Hammer Effect Digital Piano

Yamaha P80 88-Key Graded Hammer Effect Digital PianoBuy Yamaha P80 88-Key Graded Hammer Effect Digital Piano

Yamaha P80 88-Key Graded Hammer Effect Digital Piano Product Description:

  • Great keyboard for home and stage performers
  • Graded hammer effect sounds just like a piano
  • PC interface for computer connectivity
  • Two-track sequencer for composing
  • Ultra-slim and lightweight design

Product Description

Whether you're practicing at home, playing with the band, or doing a live solo performance, the Yamaha P80 88-Key Graded Hammer Effect Digital Piano offers the features you need. The P80 boasts superb acoustic and electric piano voices, along with a number of other essential instruments such as organs, bass, and even strings. Thanks to the "graded hammer effects" on this keyboard, the action is as close to that real thing as you can get. Leave it to Yamaha, a world leader in acoustic pianos, to develop a keyboard with action that's virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Just as on a traditional acoustic piano, the keys of the lower notes have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. The keyboard's sensitivity can even be adjusted to match your playing style.

4Best compromise
By Tom Rose
When I needed something portable for silent practice of classical techniques and repertoire my choice was the Yamaha P80. It is the best compromise. The sound is near enough to a real piano, the action is close enough that skills transfer, it is easily portable, and the built in speakers mean that it is usable just as it is, as a self contained unit, with no extras. Compared to the offerings from other makers it was the long sustain of the Yamaha sound that made it stand out for me. Looking at the other features: 64 note polyphony makes the pedal usable even for things like long glissandos - in fact it is better than Yamaha's own Silent System Grand pianos which offer only 32. Then factor in the price and I could not see the point of paying more for any of the pianos "higher up" Yamaha's range which sounded at best marginally better, and felt exactly the same to play. The other extras - other instruments, built in metronome and recorder, MIDI output are just icing, though for some they will be key features. However, the advertiser's claims that the sound and feel are identical to an acoustic piano are way over the top. The sound is always recognisably electronic, and becomes more so as you hear more of it during hours of practice. It is especially so when you play staccato, sforzando, or with pedal. And the action is quite unique, better than an organ or early electric piano, but still unlike an acoustic piano. Despite the weighted keys there is no sensation of a "bite-point" at which the hammers are launched, and there is always an unnatural, slightly springy feel to the return of the notes. So it is not quite what Yamaha claim, but it is is still a useful practice instrument for the traditional pianist and emulates enough of a real piano that what you learn on the P80 you can play on an acoustic.I chose the P80 as a "silent practice" tool but if you are not a traditional pianist, and are buying this as an instrument in its own right, perhaps for gigging with a rock or jazz band, or for schmoozing at wedding receptions, then I don't think you'll be disappointed either.

5Yamaha P-80 Digital Keyboard
By scuba08801
Great digital keyboard for beginners or teachers. Weighted keys add a realistic feel and provide finger strengthening. Full sized, with 88 keys, from low A to high C. Control Panel allows adjustment of volume, metronome, demos, record & playback, voice/variation, effects and reverb. Keyboard can connected directly to MAC or IBM/PC compatible computers via the MIDI IN/OUT connectors and a MIDI interface...

5terrific supplemental instrument
By Big Jack
great practice instrument esp if you live in an apartment or need off-hour practicing. Outstanding simulation of a weighted keyboard. A little heavy to be a true portable (probably around 40 lbs, maybe double that with a rolling hardcover case), but a terrific instrument for practice and most uses. IMHO as good as, or better, than many of the Roland or Korg units which are priced much higher. (I am not a Yamaha employee when I say this.)

5Amazingly feature-packed trunk tracking scanner
By hyperbolium
Given that this is my first scanner, some of my enthusiasm for its features and ease-of-use might simply be naivete. On the other hand, having a fairly deep technical background, I think my appreciation of this unit's abilities and organization are mostly based on Uniden's exceptional design. Over and over I find that this unit operates just as I'd like it to, showing that it's the clear result of several generations of refined scanner design.

The BC-780XLT provides both traditional frequency scanning, as well as trunk-tracking. Traditional scanning lets you program frequencies into memory banks, and then scan through them looking for active signals. You can also search ranges by programming the low and high endpoints, and having the scanner search between them for active frequencies. With 10 banks of 50 frequencies each, the BC-780XLT provides reasonable room for even the most crowded airwaves. (And, as discussed further below, the ability to upload and download the scanner from a computer extends this ability significantly.) Individual banks can be turned on and off, and individual channels can be explicitly locked out, allowing you to finely tailor your scan.

Where this unit differs from traditional scanners is in its ability to track trunked systems. In such systems a small set of frequencies is shared by many different organizations (e.g., police, fire, public works), and rather than assigning fixed frequencies to specific units, the frequencies are assigned dynamically as needed. The result is that a single conversation may hop between frequencies as it progresses. Tracking this with a traditional scanner is nearly impossible, as a single frequency will play host to parts of different conversations, and a single conversation is strewn across multiple frequencies. The trunk-tracking scanner is able to use the information on the system's control channel to follow the conversation, just like the radios of the participants. The result is that you follow a single conversation, rather than just a single frequency.

Uniden offers several models of trunk-tracking scanner, including the lower-priced 895, and the handheld 245. The 895 is limited to tracking either trunked systems or traditional frequencies at any one time. The 780 (and 245), on the other hand, can intermingle trunk and regular frequencies within a single memory bank, and be set to scan through both of them, or between banks which contain any combination of trunked and standard frequencies.

For me, where the 780 really excels is in its alphanumeric display. In addition to having an alpha tag for each channel, you are able to set up scan lists of talk group IDs. Talk group IDs represent a logical channel (rather than a single frequency), such as the police department's dispatch channels ("Dispatch 1" "Dispatch 2"). When following a trunked system, the scanner tracks talk groups, rather than individual frequencies, and the labeling will show you an alpha tag for the talk group (e.g., "Tactical 1"), rather than just he Motorola or EDACS ID number. This makes it much easier to know who you're listening to.

Public trunked systems are well documented (either on the Web, or in publications such as "Police Call"), but for those that simply appear out of thin air (you might stumble on a system's control channel while searching frequency ranges, for example), the 780 will also help you find the full set of frequencies. Once you have found the control channel in a Motorola system, you can use a "control channel only" mode to ferret out the rest of the system's frequencies.

The 780 has a serial port through which the unit can be programmed or driven by computer. There are numerous software packages for accomplishing this, available through the many on-line 780 discussion groups and websites. It's a good thing, too, as 500 channels, plus 10 trunk scan lists of 100 group IDs each (1000 total) would be nearly impossible to program through the scanner's front console. By keeping separate frequency files on your computer, you can easily download different sets of parameters (i.e., should you have more than 500 frequencies you want to keep track of).

The front console and menu system are reasonably easy to understand, given the complex function available in this receiver. A novice user can get up and running with traditional frequency scanning very quickly, and the unit come with introductory frequency guides. Getting a trunked system programmed is a bit more work, but still not too complicated. The manual has most of the operational detail you'll need, though it's not always well organized as a reference (e.g., items mentioned in passing in one section may not be repeated elsewhere where you might go looking for it). The manual also contains a few mistakes. The numerous on-line discussion groups can help out if you get stuck.

The reception with the included whip antenna is excellent in dense, urban areas. Where stations are weaker, obviously, an external antenna will be needed. The sound quality out of the bottom firing speaker is very listenable, though an external speaker (for which a connection is included) would improve the audio quality. The unit comes with both a wall-wart 120v adapter, as well as power cords for connection to a car battery and a car's cigarette lighter. Reports of mobile usage have been very positive.

Overall this has been a great purchase. I picked the 780 over the 895 primarily for the 780's sophisticated alpha tagging system, and secondarily for its ability to track trunked and non-trunked systems at the same time. Both features have turned out to be essential to my enjoyment. Hopefully Uniden will get all of these features into a handheld unit!

5The best scanner by far!
By Ashley Rohde
This scanner is by far one of the best ever! The receive is very sensitive. The display is large and easy to read. The back light can be set to off/med/high. The 780 also does a great job at following the trunked systems. You can also create your own text tags for channels or talkgroups. The WX alert is the best I ever seen on a scanner. You can enter the exact FIPS code for your County. By entering the FIPS codes eliminate false alerts. Great radio for the all around user. Did I mention it also has a computer interface? That is right you can control it with your computer (software is aftermarket, there is some "freeware" on the web).

5Excellent tradeoff between size/weight and sound quality
By Mark Colan
As a frequent traveller, a criteria in whether to bring something is if the function justifies the space and weight. These small speakers in a compact and light package with their excellent sound are likely to come on every future overnight trip.

Now of course it isn't going to sound like a nice home stereo or even a boom box. But it can play loud enough, I suspect, to evoke complaints from your neighbors in the hotel. The high end is nice and crisp, and gives a dispersed sound that seems much wider than the width of the speaker, perhaps thru DSP. The midrange and bass are adequate, not quite in balance with the high end, but pleasant sounding. The bass goes audibly low, though of course with this power it's not going to shake your room. Unlike headphones (the only viable alternative) I could listen to these for hours, though quality headphones can sound better. I play music and movies on the computer thru the speakers and they are very good for this purpose.

The AC adaptor deserves special mention. Smallest and lightest one I've ever seen with this power capacity (9V 1000mA), obviously does not have a transformer. The prongs swing down when not in use, handy for packing. And it works for 100-240v, which is all you'll need. You will need a plug converter when using this in locales that use other than US plug style, but not a transformer. Also takes 4 AA batteries (I recommend rechargeables).

I bought a unit like this from Sony about 3 years ago, I think it's called the SRS-T1. That one includes a heavy transformer that only works in the US and does not have as rich midrange or bass, also has half the output power. The SRS-T77 is a huge improvement sonically, in weight, and in flexibility.

4Good Sound Relative to the Size and Design
By D. Pritchard
Tonight I bought a set of the SRS-T77 speakers after seeing them online. They caught my interest as I am preparing for a vacation trip where I am carrying along a camcorder, laptop, and MP3 player and thought a little extra boost in sound for all of these devices would be nice; this is particularly true for the laptop when watching DVDs from a sufficient distance away that the built-in speakers are too weak...

In a word, I was pretty surprised at the sound volume that these speakers put out with only 4 AA batteries powering them, and supposedly able to do so for up to 24 hours. I suspect the length of battery life will vary considerably with the volume. In any case, they have pleasing sound for their size but deep bass isn't their forté, being rather clipped off and flat. Again, I wasn't surprised since they are rated only at 100Hz on the low end. What I particularly like is the all-in-one folding design that will pack and travel very well. I'll leave the compact 9v adapter behind and just rely on rechargeable AAs, since I must take them along for other devices also.

If the Sonic Blue SI-5 speakers sound as good or better than these, then I'd say they are a better buy since the Sonys are rather pricey. But, with time being short and these being available, they were my best option. When I want the best sound for listening, I'll opt for my Koss Plug in-ear headphones, but I'll use the Sony speakers otherwise.

5A Great Gift
By MartyHansen
I had originally purchased these Sony SRS-T77 Personal Travel Speakers to use with me on-the-road. But they've worked so well, I've ended up using them around the house -- whenever I want to listen to my music intimately, without headphones.

The Sony has a very flat design, and is about the size of three CD jewel cases lashed together, which makes them highly portable.

The sound quality, however, is excellent -- even at low volume -- which makes them the perfect companion for enjoying my music anywhere one-on-one. I use the speakers while reading the paper in the morning, or while eating breakfast or shaving. I'll even take them into the garage with me when I'm "puttering around" (as my wife puts it), or in the backyard when I'm lounging by the pool.

For those of you old enough, do you remember your first transistor radio? I took mine with me everywhere. These Sony speakers (attached to my jukebox MP3 player) have become just as personal for me.

The unit takes four AA batteries, but will play with the power either "on" or "off." I'll use the speakers unpowered when the room is quiet, and with the juice turned on when it's not. There's also a compact AC adapter which I've never used since the batteries last so long.

When traveling -- or when relaxing around the house -- these Sony Travel Speakers are great!

I'm sure they would also make a wonderful gift. Enjoy.

5You can't get more cool than this!
By Gadgester
I'll admit it up front: the camera watch is tons of cool, but it's expensive and you may not use it as much as you'd think. Of course, it's a watch with alarms, so at least you are not spending your hard-earned money on a gadget you would use only once every 6 months. As a watch it's pretty basic and accurate, but also pretty large, so if you have small wrists, this product will look ridiculous and ridiculously bulky on you. In other words, this is a gadget for grown men with big wrists.

Of course, the reason you'd buy this product is the built-in digital camera, which sports a resolution of 120x120. This isn't much in today's world with 6 megapixel cameras, but we are not talking a professional camera here, or even a prosumer one. 120x120 is not too bad when you remember that most webcams have native resolutions of about 170x140, so this is just a bit less refined than webcams, in a package 1/5 the size or smaller. You can take up to 100 pictures, which you'd then transfer via the built-in IR to a PC. Unfortunately, you'll need to buy a separate IR sensor and upload software kit to do this, although some online shops give this away for free.

How's the image quality? Obviously you have to keep your expectations reasonable. After all, this is a cool gadget, not the digital camera to bring when you go on exotic trips. You need plenty of light, I think it's rated at 100 lux minimum. You also need to learn not to move the watch when you press the shutter button, or the picture will come out blurry. It's a focus-free camera, so everything will be in focus as long as you are at least 1 foot away from the subject (or is it object?). Finally, be sure not to take pictures of people from an angle that's too low, because most of us don't look great with our chin in the most prominent part of the picture.

Since it doesn't have flash, you can rule out taking pictures in a bar or club; besides, do you really want to snap the moment when you are drunk and look ridiculous? Not really, in my experience. So you'll probably use the camera only occasionally. For me, I caught a few heart-breaking moments on mine on Sept. 11, when the World Trade Center collapsed. Those blurry pictures caught the frenzy moment of a country in crisis, as well as the heroic efforts of New York's bravest and finest. Of course, you can't (and don't want to) expect to run into crises like this, so you can probably use the camera to spy on that cutie in your office (don't over do it!), or catch your friends in awkward manners (and risk losing their friendship!). Anyway, you can be creative, and that's what's ultimately cool about this gadget which you can carry everywhere, even in bed.

5Perfect for Apartment / Dorm Room
By Stephen Yeargin
Looking to send your teenager away for college, but don't feel like parting with the 27" television? This is a perfect solution if they already have a computer.

For comparison purposes, the other alternative is to purchase a TV tuner card for the computer. However, this substantialy degrades the picture quality and performance of the machine. With the ViewSonic box, your monitor becomes your television, even with the computer turned off.

Overall, this is an inexpensive solution that makes sense. Why haul two large pieces of electronic equipment, when this box combines the two? Now they can save their money, and buy a VGA flat panel monitor, or DVD player!

5Sweet picture - much better than computer TV tuner cards!!
By Darren Burton
I decided to try the ViewSonic ViewBox after buying a ATI TV tuner card and being dissatistfied with the picture quality. I have also seen other peoples TV tuner cards and the poor quality pictures that they provide. TV tuner cards also have a very loud "static" noise that occurs as you switch between channels. The ViewSonic TV tuner switches between channels quietly, which is very nice. The box is a very small and sleek unit. It is about nine inches long, 6 inches wide, and less than 2 inches thick. It takes about 3 minutes to hook up to your computer. It hooks directly inbetween your computer monitor and your computer tower. A VGA cable is included, so all you have to do is run your monitor cable to the back of the ViewSonic box to the RGB output, attach the VGA cable that is provided to the RGB input of the ViewSonic box, then to where you normally attach your monitor cable on your computer. Plug in the audio output from your computer, screw on your cable TV coaxial line, plug in the power supply for the ViewSonic tuner and you are ready to go. It couldn't be simpler. You are also provided with an audio output jack if you want to use different speakers (other than your computer monitor's - if that is the case). There are the standard video and left and right channel RCA jacks to plug in a VCR, and one S-video input to run the signal from a DVD player, Playstation, or X-box to your computer monitor. This is the perfect component to take that smaller computer monitor that is now collecting dust in the corner of a closet, that you just don't want to throw away and use it as a monitor for the kid's Playstation, X-box, or as a regular TV. The unit has nice sound and comes with a remote for changing channels on the TV tuner and for changing inputs. You have 4 resolution choices for the TV tuner and other outputs: 640 X 480; 800 X 600; 852 X 480; and 1024 X 768. The TV picture on 1024 X 768 resolution looks as good as my regular TV picture. I am very pleased with this purchase and think that it is the ideal solution for college students that already have a computer and do not have the space or the money to buy a TV but want to have a TV in their dorm room.

4Viewsonic Viewbox rocks
By Noel
The ViewSonic ViewBox VB50HRTV TV Tuner Box is a very good product at a great price. In my system, a Daewoo 9000 DVD player is connected to the VGA input and a Panasonic S-VHS vcr is connected via S-video. Cable tv is also connected to it. The VGA output of the Viewsonic goes to a 17" computer monitor. The Viewsonic acts as a line doubler/scaler for vcr and cable signals and passes through the DaewooVGA progressive scan signal without being able to alter it. The picture quality from the Daewoo has a 3D look to it on my computer monitor. The remote controls resolution, refresh rate, and picture controls for the video and cable inputs only. One drawback is the use of a stereo mini-plug for the VGA input's audio. The S-video/composite input uses a much better set of RCA input jacks for audio. The audio output is a stereo mini-jack which can connected to headphones or to a receiver.Highly recommended - especially in a bedroom, den, or small office video system.
