5Excellent Sound and Features
By Jetmaker
I bought this receiver to replace a 6 year old Sony (STR-D915). I had no idea what I was missing! The sound quality of this Onkyo absolutely kicks butt on the Sony. I am extremely pleased with it. For both music and home theater the sound is excellent.

One important feature on this unit: it has A+B speaker switching. A lot of receivers these days don't. If you want to drive speakers in another room you will want this.

The setup features on this unit are nice and easy to access via the remote or the front of the unit. The remote, by the way, is very good and has learning capability.

Features I like:

Intellivolume - Allows you to adjust +/- 12 dB the volume of the various audio inputs. So like on my setup where the TV input is, for whatever reason, a lot quieter. Now I can adjust that out to be equal to the other inputs.

Volume Start and Max Volume - I have kids that like to turn knobs. Occaisionally with my old Sony I'd fire it up only to have my eardrums rocked because my 2 year old had cranked it all the way to the right. With the Onkyo, I can set the volume that it will always start with, and I can also set the max volume. The unit can't be cranked any higher than that setting.

Speaker volumes - You can independently adjust the volume of each speaker (5 channels plus sub)and keep it that way. So if you have an assymetrical speaker setup, you can compensate for it(...)

5Lots of bang and thump for your buck!
By Jasmine T. Baer
My family and I could not have picked a better receiver for our first foray into the world of home theater. Installation was a breeze, and all of the knobs, switches and connectors are clearly marked to ensure that mistakes are minimized. Set up/configuration was easy - just follow the instructions in the manual, and either interface via the remote control or the knobs on the actual component. We were able to set AM/FM presets, sound levels for each of our 6 speakers, brightness of display, etc.

The Onkyo works with DTS, Dolby Digital, and Dolby ProLogic II sources, so this base is covered well. There are several pre-set audio configurations that allow users to select the best sound depending upon the type of material. For example, "Orchestra" directs the sound to the two front speakers, and optimizes the sound of symphonies. "Stereo" sends the signal to the two front speakers and to the subwoofer, for sound that will shake your room. It is very easy to find a preset that meets your needs.

The sound this receiver helps to pump through our Polk Audio speakers is amazing. Firing up "Saving Private Ryan," and watching the opening sequence is absolutely incredible. I was ducking as the sound of bullets went whizzing through the speakers (not kidding)!!

My only beef is with the "learning" remote control. I have had difficulties in getting the "macros" to work. Everything else with this product was easy to set up and configure, so this was somewhat of a let down.

Remote control issues aside, this is a terrific piece of equipment for the price. I strongly recommend taking a step up from other brands to the Onkyo. Although a name not exactly in the mainstream, we remain pleased after almost one year of ownership.

5Excellent quality Cassette Player for my needs
By GreenMogul
I purchased this Cassette Player to copy all my analag Cassette Tapes digitally onto my Laptop. I just needed a better quality player than my Walkman and this does the job perfectly.I couldn't afford a 3-head audiophile Cassette Player which would no doubt increase the quality of the analog to digtal conversion process. So I settled for this Sony which was in my price range.I purchased this model instead of the TEAC W-860 R mainly because of the slight price difference. If this had a remote it would be much better but as it is, I'm not that lazy. I mostly use the playback well, because I don't really need to record onto tape anymore. It is also fairly noisy when stopping, playing, forwarding, etc. Don't use it near someone who is trying to sleep! The Dolby Noise logic is also fantastic, I have a lot of tapes with large amounts of tape hiss and the logic cuts most of that down.I also like the fact that you are able to do continuous play but I try not to do that because I hear that auto-reverse degrades the heads/motor of the unit.My conversion process has begun and it is taking a really long time, but I am getting great results with this Sony TCWE475.

3No remote automatically makes this less than perfect!
By airfirehorse
This cassette deck does have some really good features like HX Pro, Dolby B & C, music search (AMS, which looks for blank spaces to guess where the next song is), and full dubbing capabilities. I have it connected to my Onkyo A/V receiver via both output and input, since all of my components operate through the receiver. It works well this way and i can record from all sources with no problem.

I have a problem with the sound. It's not as good as the specs would have you believe. I've compared it with an Onkyo tape recorder and, although the numbers are similar (as far as wow & flutter and dynamic range), the Onkyo is much better (it was too expensive and had less features, but now i see why it cost more). The big thing is the lack of a remote. Sony has this funky A1II communication bus system, which is only truly useful if you buy all Sony components. I don't so it's useless to me. The excuse for not including the remote is that you can buy a Sony 300-CD Changer that can control this tape deck. I don't like it when companies use this method to obtain sales, so chances are i'll eventually resell this deck and get one with its own remote and better sound.

I paid $150 + tax at Circuit City. Same price as from J&R/Amazon and with shipping costs the price is almost equal. I'd say buy it if the price is $110 or less. That's all it's worth to me personally.

4Moderate Quality Audiophile Tape Deck
By Antinomian
150 USD is not really an expensive price for a tape deck of this quality. That would be about 8 new CD's purchased in a store. Ten years ago tape decks cost more, but since cassette tapes are a quickly dying medium, lowering the price is the only enticement left. I have 150-200 cassette tapes with a mix of songs from about 1500 different CD's and albums, so even if I throw out 80-90% of my tapes that's still the equivalent of songs from 150+ different CD's. That would be an expensive replacement cost, let alone what the price of what 1500 CD's would cost. So a new cassette deck allows me access to those relatively few songs I still like.Phil Audio of Bangalore India didn't like the sound quality. He's listed some high quality equipment so he's familiar with audiophile level electronic equipment. He stated that the Sony deck doesn't sound as good as the specs listed. Sony's specs list 30 Hz-17,000 Hz +/-3dB for the widely available CrO2 high bias type II cassette tape. That's a relatively good range. The important thing to look for is the +/-3 dB value. If missing, the number given is almost meaningless. A tape deck performing at this level should sound adequate. If it doesn't then maybe the source material is of low quality. The other would be if Sony is lying about their specs, in that case they could be liable of [...] and a possible lawsuit. One would hope that a multi-billion dollar corporation like Sony wouldn't risk their reputation and lie about their equipment specs. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I own and have owned several Sony products and they've all worked well and as specified. So maybe something else is influencing the sound. I've looked at the specs of a similarly priced Onkyo tape deck. There a little lower at 30 Hz-14,000 Hz +/-3dB, but this is still good and would probably be adequate for most people and Onkyo is another high quality high fidelity electronics company. The one thing I would not consider is relying on the tape deck portion of mini stereo system. I'm mildly familiar with audiophile quality equipment. I have a Harman-Kardon cassette deck that lists 20-21,000 Hz +/-3dB for the lowest level type I tape that's exhibiting some problems after many, many years of use. When I first got this deck, I was a little thrown off by the sound because it played so high in the high frequency range. The low frequency sounds are still there for an adequately recorded tape, it's just with so many high frequencies it's not as immediately noticeable. So if one is listening to low fidelity sound equipment, their ear is becoming accustomed to it and to the probable boominess being used to compensate for the poor sound reproduction. It takes some time then to readjust to high quality sound and reproduction closer to what the musicians originally played at. I have owned a mini-stereo system by Aiwa and the tape deck on it ceased functioning after a few months. Another one lists the specs as 80-12,500 Hz 8dB. What does the "8dB" mean here... who knows. If you want to hear a bad tape player, get out your Sony Walkman (which makes no claim to good sound reproduction, but wasn't meant for that) out of the box and compare the sound of that Walkman to this tape deck to hear the sound difference. If you think the Walkman sounds better in comparison, then either you'll need to listen to this deck for a while to reprogram your ears, or this deck will be actually too high quality for you. If, however, this tape doesn't sound good enough one will then need to progress to higher quality audiophile cassette decks. Years back there was the famous Nakamichi Dragon with enough knobs to look like a missile launch facility or another Nakamichi cassette deck that was auto-reverse but that preserved the quality of a single direction motor that it would physically eject the tape, rotate it and reinsert it (you had to see it to believe it). Now tape decks at this level, if they even still exist, will probably be in the 4 digit price range by now. This Sony tape deck is a moderate level audiophile cassette tape player and at 150 USD is reasonably priced for a dying media (note that it is overpriced at 300 USD in some European countries). The one thing this tape deck deserves an F for is for their manual. I've read several manuals over the years and this one is nothing short of confusing. They combine the WE-475 and WE-675 into one manual. However, the WE-675 is so different that their are pages just dedicated to it. Also in several places they list: (for WE-675 only) and this includes for the automatic bias adjustment for type I, II, and IV cassettes, that seems to imply that the WE-475 doesn't do that. That would be unfathomable and would be unacceptable for a tape deck at this level. Also for playing and recording in Dolby, it lists (for WE-675 only) in places that if it wasn't for a photo where I could actually see the Dolby switch, I would have thought this tape deck didn't have Dolby, again which would be unacceptable at this price. So if you don't understand something in their manual, it's not you, it's Sony's fault. The one thing interesting in the Specifications section, is that Sony seems to imply that a type IV metal tape will play at 30 Hz-19,000 Hz +/-3dB, but has a line listed as: 30 Hz-13,000 Hz +/-3dB, -4dB recording. Now this is a confusing spec, but seems to imply that the tape deck will RECORD at a lower frequency range of 30-13,000 Hz +3dB -4dB (?) for a metal tape. Now this was something I've never considered before, that a tape deck would record at a lower level than it played at. Of course a tape recorded at 30-13,000 Hz will only be able to play back at 30-13,000 Hz, no matter what the machine. Let alone what it records at for the much more available type II tape. Now I don't know if this is just unique to this tape deck, which would be a serious negative mark, or whether all tape decks record at a different freq range than they play at and just don't mention it, and thus should give Sony a lot of credit for being honest to mention it.

5An incredible bargain in a basic turntable
By Douglas A. Greenberg
No, you can't use this Sony turntable to beat mix 12" dance records or to perform fancy dj-ing tricks. And it certainly will not compare with any $1000 audiophile turntables in terms of audio reproduction quality. This amazingly inexpensive unit will function nicely, however, if you are seeking a basic turntable to play records.

This turntable will NOT play old 78 rpm records, but it does just fine with 45's (the small "hold in the middle" kind or l2") or 33 1/3 rpm lp's. Operation is simple: all you need to do is place the record on the platter, put down the built-in dust cover, and push "start." If you wish to interrupt play, you push "stop." If you want to raise the tonearm above the record temporarily, you push "up/down." What could be simpler?

Since it includes its own built-in preamp, this unit is easy to use in conjunction with a home computer. Why would someone do this? Not only can you utilize your computer's audio reproduction capabilities to listen to records as you work (or play), but hooking up a turntable to your sound card is the first step in setting up a system to convert your old vinyl records to digital files so you can burn them to cd. That's mainly how I use my PS-LX250H, and in this capacity is has performed flawlessly and magnificently.

It's unfair to rate this item based upon unrealistic comparisons to far more feature-laden and expensive turntables. What's truly astonishing here is just what a fine machine Sony has made available for such a bargain price.

5Great Price and Sound; The One To Get For Most People!
By M. Allen Greenbaum
This turntable works easily, sounds great, and is offered at a great price. You can spend more and get a better cartridge and more features, but for someone who wants a very good basic turntable in addition to a CD player and other decoding devices, this one is fantastic.

I recommend vinyl as an adjunct to CDs for several reasons, among them:

1. You may already have a collection you haven't listened to for years. (You'll remember how holding the album, looking at the cover, and reading the liner notes were once part of the entire aesthetic experience.)

2. Vinyl does sound warmer than traditional CDs. (Joni Mitchell's "Blue" is unbelievably raw and "present" on vinyl.)

3. It's easy to build a new collection, especially classical records, by hunting down inexpensive LPs at library and garage sales.

Unlike some record players sold now, the turnplayer does not play 78's. However, many of those that do play this format have self-contained speakers only. This model has a preamp which connects to PHONO, AUX, or VIDEO jacks. The needle weight is not given in the information booklet; generally speaking, the more expensive, lighter needles better preserve sound quality. Although not a "high-end" model for the strict audiophile, here are the SPECS:

Drive: BeltMotor: DCPlatter: 295 mm. diameter (aluminum, die-cast)Speeds: 33 1/2 and 45 r/minWow and Flutter: Less than 0.25% (WRMS)Signal to Noise: More than 50dB (DIN-B)

Tone arm: Dynamic balanced straight shaped with soft damping controlEffective arm length: 195 mm

Power consumption: 2 QWeight: 2.7 kgDimensions: Approx. 420 x 100 x 342 (w/h/d)

Supplied Accessories: 45 r/min adaptor, platter with drive belt, rubber mat, dust cover.

The needle raises, lowers, and moves to the edge of the album automatically; the dust cover is moved by hand. Very highly recommended!

5excellent unit for the price
By A Customer
My 30-40 year old lp's play excellently on this turntable. Some with visible scratches play without noise or skips. I have gotten excessive noise and some skipping only on 3 or 4 records out of about 60 I have played so far. Those few had scratches that looked like a knive had been dragged across the surface. This turntable is a good buy even at a higher price I paid at another store because every [local store] within 130 miles was sold out and I didn't want to order by mail. One salesman tried to sell me a pre-amp to go along with this turntable. It doesn't need it. It has a built-in preamp which was pre-set for connecting to AUX or VIDEO jacks, with a switch to reset if connecting to PHONO jacks. If I were comparing to units selling for much higher prices, I'm sure it would not rate 5 stars, but I'm rating it for price and my usage, playing through a mid-grade bookshelf mini system which cost only a little more than the turntable.

5A Great Receiver for a Great Price
By x
The TX-8511 Onkyo Stereo Receiver is an affordable, efficient way to upgrade the quality of your sound system. This receiver even made my old set of speakers sound great. I recommend this receiver for people who just want the basics for their sound system. For me, it was important to have a phono input, because I listen to records. The TX-8511 has the phono input as well as inputs for anything else you might want to hook up (e.g., CD players, multiple tape decks, etc.). It is also really quiet, with no buzz or hum whatsoever. It is clean, lean, and mean. The 100 watts per channel is more than sufficient to raise the roof, if you feel the need.

Besides its excellent performance, I also appreciated how easy it was to set up. The instructions were clear and written with simplicity, and everything is labeled clearly on the receiver itself. It only took a few minutes to get everything working. This is such a great unit that I hope that Onkyo doesn't do something ill-advised like discontinue it.

5It doesn't get any better than this!
By Team Noodles
If you are in the neighborhood for a new stereo receiver, but are not really looking for the extra expenses and features of a "home theater" receiver, than look no farther than the Onkyo TX-8511. This has got to be the best receiver I have ever owned. I bought it back in early 2000, and thus far, it has never let me down. Truly, it is a highly dependable rock-solid receiver. The sound quality is amazingly crystal clear with no distortion. Pull it out of the box, hook it up, and be prepared to hear your music in a whole new way. Also, with an FM sensitivity of 11.2 dBf, you'll be able to tune into your favorite radio stations easily with minimal interference.

It has 4 inputs (including a phono input for turntables that do not have a built in phono preamp) and 2 video inputs (which can be used for other uses too -- as I said, this is not a home theater receiver so it does not have the "home theater" features like Dolby Digital).

It also has some really nice features with it like:

*30 AM/FM presets plus the ability to "name" those presets up to 8 characters. (Example: instead of seeing "94.9 FM" on the display, you could program in the call letters of the radio station, or something else.)

*Direct access tuning (from unit's front panel only)

*Motorized volume control

*Telephone-style alphanumeric keypad on the unit's front panel

*Tape 2 Monitor loop for connecting either a 2nd tape player or a graphic equalizer

*4 speaker channels, so that you can run two sets of speakers (A, B, or A and B)

*Two switched power outlets on back (This works great for audio components that do not have an on/off button on their remotes)

*Impedance selector for setting up 4 or 8 Ohm speakers

*Analog volume, bass, treble, and balance controls (I like this better than the digital controls because it is alot easier to fine tune the sound.)

No other stereo receiver has managed to stand the test of time quite like this one. It may be a bit more pricy than some other standard stereo receivers, but it is well worth it! If you buy it, you will NOT be disappointed.

4Very good high-powered stereo receiver
By D. R. Schryer
Despite the current fad for multi-channel audio/video recivers, most people still listen to music with just two speakers and, therefor, only need a two-channel stereo receiver. The Onkyo TX-8511 is a very good stereo receiver with plenty of power -- 100 watts per channel -- good performance specs, and all the features you really need. It's also quite reasonably priced. No matter how much you may be impressed with the cool concept of a multi-channel "home theater" system, if your budget or available space dictate just two speakers why not stick with a good stereo receiver? And this is a very good stereo receiver for the price.

5Good choice
By A Customer
I needed a basic stereo receiver to play my old LP's and cassette tapes as well as my newer CD's. The Onkyo TX8211 does it all very well. Good sound, easy hookup, low price, and adequate power. Yes, 50 watts is sufficient power for a normal sized room. It is obvious that the previous reviewer does not own an Onkyo TX8211 or has even gone to the store to look at one, or he would know that this receiver does come with a built in phono input. The alternate to this receiver is the ... Sony STR-DE185 but the Sony would require the addition of a ...phono preamp adapter to play LP's so the total price is back up .... The ...Onkyo will save you a lot of hassle and give you slightly better numbers (THD, etc.) than the Sony albeit the Sony is a 100 watt system.

4Onkyo TX8211
By A Customer
Overall a well-equipped receiver with enough power to keep most listeners happy. I chose this model for its excellent price and phono input. I'm pleased with the crisp clean sound. A few drawbacks keep this unit from perfection. The remote only controls volume and input source, although there are plenty of controls for other Onkyo components, which may eliminate the need for multiple remotes. Also the Tape 2 input is intended as a monitor that overrides other inputs when selected and must be turned off before listening to other sources, a minor inconvenience. Tape to tape recording capabilities are limited, if not impossible.

5Excellent Stereo Receiver!!!!
By S. Roberts
If you are looking for an inexpensive Stereo receiver that sounds GREAT this is it! This is NOT an AV Receiver and does not claim to be. It does exactly what it was designed for and that is play great sounding stereo music. I bought to use in my office at work and Love it. The unit comes on when I walk in at 7 AM and stays now till I leave around 5:30 PM and have NEVER had any problems with this unit. Unlike my Sony unit I have at home that cost me 3 times more money. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an Onkyo unit, you will not regret it!!

5The Best CD Player for Working Out
By S. Martino
I just got this CD player for working out and it is the best!! I had previously tried a panasonic cd player which skipped while I was walking on the treadmill at a fast pace and stopped entirely when I started running. The Sony Sport is unstoppable!!! I can run, jump up and down, swing it around, and it keeps on going! Nothing interrups the play, the quality is amazing. Also, the sound is incredible! I had the best workout, I love this Sony Sport!!!!

This is this the best sounding cd player for its price. Ive tried many other ones.It plays Cd-R/Rw. Also although they say it has 45-Second esp, it actually has 45! It never skips. Also this cd player is the best looking one for its price range. It has a clear blue body. Also its heat resistant. It has about 18 hours of battery life if u play it with alotta bass and volume, but can have over 20+ hours. It has a line out and all kinds of other features. It not only has one level of bass boost but 2!(yes thats right....it has TWO!) It has unbelievable bass. I have no cons about this cd player other than the cheap headphone but hey, do any come with great one?Trust me this is a GREAT buy.
