4A beauty in form and function, but will the handle slip?

I've owned this knife for several months and am pleased with it -- it certainly is good-looking. The santoku blade is great for chopping veggies -- I think the hollow (Granton) edge is well worth the small increase in price over a flat blade.The only drawback to this knife -- as it is with competitors' steel-handle knives, is that most cooks will not feel as secure holding it, particular if your hands are a little slippery or greasy. It just feels as if it might slip. For that reason, I think the Wusthof Grand Prix version of this knife would be a slightly better choice. But hey, if you have a zillion-dollar kitchen and a zillion knives, this series is the prettiest to display that you'll find anywhere.

5Nice knife!

This is a very good quality knife. I currently have the J.A. Henckels four start collection, but I wanted to try the Wusthof's knife after hearing all the good things about it. Like J.A. Henckels' Twin Star collection, this knife has the total stainless look. But after comparing two brands of knives, all I can say is that I wish I bought Wusthof's knives instead.This knife is really sharp and has a good feel to it. It cuts really well. The hollow edge keeps the vegetables/food from sticking to the sides, which also make this knife exceptional. None of J.A. Henckles' line has this special and exlusive feature. I might have to start upgrading my J.A. Henckels to Wusthof. This is definitly money worth spent, if you are into having good kichen stuff.

5Not necessary, but useful.

Some people might note that you don't really need this particular size and shape knife. If you have an 8" chef's knife, a paring knife, maybe a long carver and a bread knife, you can pretty much do anything. However, to my mind, that is irrelevant to judging the quality of the tool. The Culinar knives are beautiful, superbly balanced, and, in my experience, take a great edge.This knife is perfect for making a sandwich, carving a modest sized roast, doing many of the things a boning knife would do. Slice a tomato? Done. Cut raw meat for serving size, or for a recipe? No problem. And, with the nearly seamless stainless handle, it's easy to clean to prevent contamination.I like this knife. I don't use it as often as my chef's knives, or my paring knife, but it is a useful tool, and I'm glad it's in my collection. Additionally, I have read some reviews from people who complained that they had Wusthof knives that were dull, didn't sharpen, or wouldn't hold and edge. This amazes me, and is not at all my experience with their fine products.

5Perfect carving fork

I have used three carving forks over the past 30 years. This one is by far the best I have used. It replaced a carving fork from Wusthof's classic line - the line that set the standard for kitchen cutlery for a century, until Wusthof introduced the Culinar line. The Wusthof classic fork had in turn replaced a stainless steel fork from another German manufacturer.I originally wanted this Culinar fork to match my Culinar knives, even though I figured the match would just be a matter of looks rather than functionality. I was wrong. The difference between this fork and other carving forks is even bigger than for the knives.Perhaps the biggest difference is in the handle. The handle of most carving forks does not fill an average to large size hand. This allows the fork to move a bit even with a firm grip, limiting how well one can hold the roast still. That's only a minor inconvenience for a sirloin or tenderloin roast where one is making vertical slices against the carving board, but can be major annoyance with a larger rib roast or a whole turkey, where some cuts are made horizontally or at other angles.The handle of this Culinar fork allows a much surer grip, making it a breeze to carve. That's true whether you have large or small hands, thanks to the taper of the handle. The butt end of the handle is quite beefy, but even a toddler can get a sure grip by grasping the narrow end of the handle just below the neck. While the stainless steel of the handle looks smooth, the brushed surface actually makes it less slippery than even composite and wood handles.This fork has other advantages as well. The tines are straight, making them much easier to place out of the way of the knife, even with more complex cuts. The fork is slightly flattened, allowing parallel slices to be made closer to the tines, as well as reducing the loss of juices while carving. And while the overall length of the fork, at 11 inches (28 cm), is the same as for the equivalent classic Wusthof fork, the tines are a bit longer at about 5 inches (12 cm), permitting better handling of larger roasts. (The "6 inch" measurement in the description includes the length of both tines and neck.)My wife got me this fork for Chistmas from my wish list, and after carving Christmas dinner with it, I never want to use another carving fork again. If you know someone who regularly makes roasts - or who you would like to make roasts - get them this fork. Or get it for yourself, if you enjoy cooking. You will not regret it!

5Excellent fork for carving poultry and roasts

This Wusthof Culinar 6" meat fork does an excellent job of holding meat and poultry in place so that they can be carved. Although this fork is a little on the expensive side, I find that it is stronger and sharper than cheaper forks such as the Calphalon meat fork. Compared with similar stainless handled forks by Global and Henckels, this one has a more comfortable grip, and the two piece construction really is not a disadvantage. The Henckels felt too slippery, and I really find the Global handles to be very uncomfortable in my hand. The Culinar fork also has the right amount of heft, and the best balance of these three that I have tested.While this may be too expensive for those on a budget, I have to rate this fork five stars since it is clearly the best in its class.

4Not too shabby!

Let me tell you folks, when my late husband received this fork as a gift from one of his clients, my first thought was, "Return it and let's get the cash!". Luckily we kept it around long enugh to realize what an asset it is to our kitchen. This fork has two prongs which is perfect for any job you would want it for. Our cook, Frances, just loves it, and refuses to carve with anything else. In fact, I just bought him one for his own family for Christmas! What can I say, I know how to treat my staff!

4Good Knive, Check Handle

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).

This particular model, the 5 inch boning knife is a good knife. In my review of the 6 inch cleaver in the Classic and Grand Prix lines, I noted that most people really don't use a cleaver anymore, as they buy either pre-cut/pre-packaged meats, or they have the butcher cut the meat into loins or steaks for them. However, I think this knife is slightly more useful for the everyday cook than the cleaver. I find this knife useful for both boning and fat trimming. Although this knife is probably not essential for a starter collection, I would add this knife before a cleaver.

5The boning knife

What's a boning knife? A boning knife is used to separate bones from meat. But why does that require a special kind of knife? One might think that, for this now infrequent task, one could simply use another knife, with some care and extra time.That does not work as well as one might think. A larger knife, like a chef's knife or a cleaver, is too clumsy to follow the irregular surface between bone and meat; I've ended up with wasted meat on the bone, and chips of bone on the meat. A smaller knife, such as a utility knife, is just not up to the force required for cutting through tough tendon or gristle.Enter the boning knife, specially designed for this task. The slim, slightly flexible blade is maneuverable enough to follow the curve of the bone; the oversize handle facilitates a good, strong grip, making it easier to part gristle and connective tissue.The special features of Wusthof's Culinar line are especially useful in a boning knife. Wusthof's blade alloy - the best in the business - holds a razor edge well, greatly reducing the required cutting effort. The curve of the stainless steel handle fills out the palm of the hand, making it easy to apply whatever force is needed, while the taper of the handle makes it comfortable no matter what your hand size. Since cutting raw meat can be a messy job, the easy cleanup of this all stainless knife is also a nice feature. Contrary to one of the other reviews, these advantages add up to far more than looks.My first use of this knife felt magical - the knife became part of my hand, and the meat seemed to fall off the bone by itself. If you ever need a boning knife, you won't regret having this one.

5Hate cutting meat? Get this one to enjoy cutting meat.

I wanted to replace my cheap knife block set with a great one that can last a generation and found Wushtof Culinar Series to my liking. Initially, I thought the metallic handle could be slippery. So, I went to a local store and tested it and found it to be be very very grippy and solid to hold. I liked how these knives curve on the handle. That helps handle get a perfect grip in the hand.

I always hated cutting meat because of hard it was to cut out some fat that was streching forever with my old knife. This knife is not only very sharp but it is not slippery even though the handle is steel.

This probably will be your favorite knife if you cut meat a lot.

5Best steak knives in the world

Wusthof has been known for creating premier kitchen knives for nearly two centuries. Most of their knives, including the ones in this set, have a one piece forged stainless steel blade, bolster, and full length tang. (The bolster is the thick part at the base of the blade next to the handle; the tang is the part that goes down into the handle to stabilize the blade, and the tang's being full length means it runs the full length of the handle, providing maximum stability to the blade.)Wusthof's classic knife design has handles of black polypropylene riveted to the tang with three stainless steel rivets, and a white trident in circle on a red background as the symbol - you may be familiar with the look. In the 1990s, Wusthof introduced the Culinar line for commercial use, with hollow stainless steel handles shaped to provide the best possible grip, and a single stainless steel rivet with the trident symbol securing the tang at the base of the handle. These knives are the steak knives in the Culinar line.I had been using inexpensive but serviceable steak knives for years, but when I got married in 2000, I wanted to get some nicer steak knives to go with our wedding silver. I'd really liked my classic Wusthof kitchen knives, so I looked at Wusthof's steak knives.The Culinar knives seemed a good match for wedding silver because of the metal handles, but it wasn't until I picked them up that I was really sold. The handle shape lends itself to really effortless use, both for myself and my wife, and the balance is perfect, solid without being heavy. The blades, of course, cut through steak like butter, and require much less sharpening than most steak knives.Once I took them home, I started using them every day, not just with the wedding silver. Two things that I had been slightly worried about - the clip at the tip of the blade, and the possibility that the metal handles would feel cold - have not been issues at all; in actual use the handles are perfect, and the clip, not as noticeable against a tablecloth as against the black background in the case, helps prevent the knives from being point heavy and gives them a sharper tip that is occasionally useful. They are simply wonderful knives.Now, it must be said that the price for these knives reflects their premium quality. If they're out of your price range, you could consider the Wüsthof Classic 4-Piece Steak Knife Set, with equally good blades and the classic black polypropylene handles, for about half the price. Avoid the even cheaper "Wusthof Gourmet" knives; they have stamped blades like the inexpensive knives you can get in the grocery store, not the quality forged blades of these Culinar series knives.If these Culinar steak knives are within your price range - even if you have to stretch a bit - definitely get them. You'll thank yourself every time you have steak!

5Culinar Steak Knife Set

I have to admit that I have been enamored with the Culinar series since it was first introduced, and have gradually added to it as new items have become available. The latest addition is the steak knife set.The knives themselves have an inherent beauty and are visually deceptive in that they appear at first glance to be a single piece of steel from handle to blade, though in fact blade and handle are individual pieces with the illusion of being seamless.The balance of these knives is perfect, and if you are adding to a growing Culinar collection as I was, I would highly recommend these knives.

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife and a 6 inch sandwich knife.

The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.

As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.

I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich knife. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. This knife is just the wrong width and length for most tasks.

This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife, the 4 ½ inch utility knife, and the 9 inch bread knife. Judge for yourself.

5More than just looks

I have a hard time believing that someone who has actually used both Wusthof's Culinar and Classic knives would dismiss the differences as merely "looks". Having recently replaced my entire collection of Wusthof Classics with Culinars, I can say the difference goes much farther. The difference was obvious to me the first time I picked up a Culinar knife: it felt like the handle molded itself to my hand, as if the knife was an extension of myself, rather than a mere implement.A close look at the shape, rather than just the color, of the handles will show why. Wusthof Classic and Grand Prix knives have a traditional handle shape, thicker in the middle with a straight back. That provides a good strong grip if your hand is the right size - and they are pretty good for me, since my hands are of average size.The gently curved shape of the Culinar handles, though, while providing as good a grip, allows more control over the cutting action and the precise angle of the blade. The taper in the handle makes it a perfect fit not just for average size hands, but for any size hand: a smaller hand will stay toward the bolster, where the handle is thinner, but a bigger hand will cover the handle further back, where it is thicker.The three knives in this set are good knives to start with. The chef's knife and the paring knife are needed in any well equipped kitchen; the "sandwich knife" can substitute for any of three or four other special purpose knives.The Wusthof classic chef's knife is available in several different sizes; the 8" (20 cm) blade size works well for almost any cutting task in the kitchen. It can also be used, in a pinch, when what the cook really wants is a second chef's knife - for example, to cut fresh vegetables for a salad when it wouldn't be hygienic to reuse the big chef's knife that was just used on raw meat. Finally, it can be used to slice and serve smaller roasts, for those who do not have a carving set.One note: a sharpening steel, such as the Wüsthof Culinar 9-Inch Chrome Sharpening Steel, is an important complement to any set of quality knives. A cook who does not already have a sharpening steel will need one to go with this set - or if your budget is limited, you may consider a steel with just the Wusthof 4589/20 Culinar Chef's Knife 8-in. instead. For a cook who has a sharpening steel, however, this is the perfect starter set.

I bought the 3 piece Started Set and the 8" bread knife and they are the only knives that I use and I feel, the only knives that one needs in the kitchen.They are a joy to use and are truly beautiful to look at.Okay, to be honest, at first I choked at the cost but I love to cook and would buy them again in a heart-beat.
