Fragile Fun

Playmobil toys are wonderful, no question, but the more elaborate they are, the more problematic. This ship is gorgeous and has great detail, including real string rigging. This toy took forever to assemble, especially that pesky rigging, with the usually excellent insrtuctions falling short. After about a day of playing, my two boys had dismantled the ship enough that it wasn't fun anymore, and after three days I could no longer get all the parts back together. It is now a somewhat expensive box filler. The other Playmobil Pirate sets are still much loved, and have been conscripted on the nearly invincible Good Ship Fisher-Price.

Great pirate toy

My 4 year old just got it for his birthday. He loves it! It did take an evening to put it together. Some of it was a little complicated, but some my son could help with. It comes with ever part you could dream of wanting for pirate play including an accordian, little glasses, lanterns, chickens, swords, treasure chest, etc. The parts fit easily in the hands of the people. Clothes can be interchanged. There is no limit on the pretend play! And it has withstood being dropped several times with NO breaking. Occassionally a piece will unhook or snap out when dropped, but my son can easily put them back together on his own. Very Durable! It was a great buy!!!

Great fun, and even sails in the bathtub!

I love Playmobil for the detail and sturdiness. Yes, pieces come off and need to be put back on, but that feature also allows children to engage more fully with the toy and lash Barbie to the riggings, for example.

My 2 year old recently discovered the ship and was thrilled. It's big for him, on the verge of being too big to carry, but that seems to be ok for him. You should also have a large bathtub if you want to sail it in the bath because of it's size. Be aware that the goblets can get stuck in your drain so make certain you get them all out before you pull the plug, or you'll be getting a shop vac to pull the pieces out of the drain trap.

My children love combining all the pieces of different sets so not only does Barbie go sailing with the pirates, but so do farm tractors and a Pride of Lions. Wonderful fun, but save the reassembly directions for all your Playmobil in a binder.

Awesome Knife

Great knife. I think it's skirting the lines of legality in my state because you can flip it open, but it's not a "gravity knife" -- it holds itself closed and it has a locking mechanism to hold the blade open, so it seems to fit within the letter of the law.The "shark tooth" tip is a neat design idea that gives it a VERY sharp point, there are serrated edges towards the handle that help out if you're trying to cut through something like twine or wires, it has a belt clip if you're toting it around as a utility knife but is also small enough to easily fit within your pocket.If you're looking for a good utility "buck knife" you might as well get something like this. The flipping action and one-finger lock disengage means you can easily use it one handed and it seems rugged enough for everyday use in the tool belt. No more dropping what you're doing so you can pry the blade out or safely close it, just a little wrist and thumb action will do it.Edit:I've had this knife for almost 2 years now and I still like it. I use it frequently (primarily for cutting open boxes from Amazon... *cough*) and can't get enough of the wrist action on it. It's so nice to be able to open and close it without having to pry the blade out 2-handed style like other utility knives. Can't say I can really comment on the whole "knife fighting" aspect other reviewers mention (don't do much knife fighting myself... you know... busy busy...) but as a simple utility knife, it's hard to beat. Still sharp, too.Edit 2 (Dec 2007) --Still have the knife. Still like it. Another reviewer said this knife was double bladed (I assume that means "sharp on both sides") but it's not. You might think it was from looking at the picture, but mine, which I ordered from this page a few years ago, is only sharp on the bottom, with the exception of the "shark tooth" tip, which is sharp on both sides, but only for a distance of like 1/8" or so (the very sharp tip is great for getting started on those highly annoying, nearly invulnerable hard plastic packages everything comes in these days).

You can open it almost as fast as a switch blade and close it even faster. I have had it for about 6 months and it is still sharp. It is light weight and comfortable to use. This knife is perfect if you want a well built knife that opens fast and is legal.

Premium Quality Knife at a Great Price

First things first: the SOG Pentagon Elite is a premium knife. VG-10 Stainless Steel, Zytel handle, Arc-Lock system. This thing is a top-of-the-line SOG product (which are all excellent quality products).That said, if you are looking for something beyond your typical inexpensive knife, this is the way to go. Not much more expensive than a mid-range knife and oh-so-awesome! The looks are sleek and understated. Refined, even.The blade itself is the same length as the handle (the tip almost touches the bottom of the handle when folded), so it is LONG. Speaking of tips, the tip is a "shark tooth" style tip, where both sides are sharp, perfect for opening boxes without damaging their contents. The blade is, as mentioned, VG-10 stainless, made in Japan. Then comes the Arc-Lock.The Arc-Lock is so awesome, I had to give it its own paragraph in my review. First thing you'll notice is how smooth it is. Opening the knife takes no effort at all (though, due to the design of the Arc-Lock, the blade stays in until you flick it out). The design of the lock makes this knife perfect for one-handed use. I have learned to close the knife not just with one hand (like all my other knives), but with nothing more than a push of the lock and a flick. Since your fingers never get in the way of the blade like on a liner-lock knife, the blade can be flicked closed in just the same way any decent knife can be flicked open. In addition, the design of the lock (and the thumb studs) means this knife is TOTALLY AMBIDEXTROUS! Just a quick switching of the pocket clip to the other side of the knife and lefties are good to go. I'm a rightie and I can use this knife left handed no problem (something I wish I could say with my other knives).I also own a SOG Kilowatt that I've had for a year and a half now and while that thing is also and excellent quality knife (AUS-8 stainless steel, a step down from VG-10, and a Zytel handle), this one knocks it out of the park. While the Kilowatt looks a little goofy, you'll never find yourself questioning the looks of this knife. It. Looks. Slick. Plus, the Arc-Lock system is just totally unbeatable. I wasn't sure if it was really a selling point for me before buying, as I'd never used it, but now that I have, I have a hard time going back to liner-locks.All in all, a great knife and a great buy. IF THIS REVIEW IS TOO LONG, AT LEAST READ THIS: this is an excellent quality knife that looks great and functions even better, thanks in huge part to the Arc-Lock system.

O.K. Scanner & Software; better than I expected

I purchased this scanner specifically for the task of digitizing a box of old, disintergrating/fading old family photos, almost all being Black&White. I tried a few photos at a local copy place, but the $18 per hour (plus $10 CD burning fee) quickly convinced me that I could purchase a scanner for a lot less than what it would cost to scan the photos on an hourly fee basis.With a few dozen exceptions, this scanner was able to satisfactorily scan my old photos. Even though this scanner has a number of limitations, I gave the scanner the top rating because it did perform as described/intended and is a good value for the dollar. I would buy this unit again. The ease of hardware and software installation was a pleasant surprise, and are easy to use. Even the included OCR software suprised me with the quality and accuracy of the resulting Word or PDF documents; it even could, with a little tweaking, scan and convert tabular information. (This is an added, unexpected benefit, as I have a 200+ page document, mostly tables, that I have always intended to convert to PDF format but postponed the task due to the emense retyping involved.)I have always disliked the "Stars" and "Best Buy" rating systems as I have been 'bitten' several times when I bought some highly rated products. No product is perfect; all have things that it can do well, and some things it can't do well (or at all). If you are unfortunate enough to buy a top rated product that can't do the one thing that you need it to do, top rated or not, you have wasted your money. [It is interesting to note that many 'impartial reviews' tend to rave about a product's good points and 'gloss over' deficiencies.]So, you should be aware of what this scanner could NOT do for me:.It does not scan transparencies (I had one 4 X 6).It has a VERY limited depth of focus: things not in intimate contact with the scan plate WILL be out of focus (a dozen or so photos mounted on stiff, warped backings could not be satisfactorily scanned, even with a phone book on the scanner cover).The scan plate is recessed making scans of oversized items impossible: the item is not in contact with the glass and thus out of focus (I had a couple of oversized photos and a few 8 X 10 photos permanently mounted on an oversized backing/frame that could not be scanned satisfactorily)Also, the unit is a bit 'flimsy' (dropped my mechanical pencil on the cover and it left a 'door dingy') and the cover not heavy enough to flatten the folds even in standard paper to maintain full scan plate contact without assistance (phonebook).

An Excellent Bang-For-You-Buck Scanner

Canon's new LiDE 30 is certainly a step up in overall image quality when compared to other slimline scanners, especially for under ... I was surprised at how good this scanner was for the price. Canon's adjustable Z-lid feature, a much-needed scanner improvement, is a must if you scan from bulky sources like books or magazines. All photo and text scans made were very crisp and accurate. (Poorer photos will need futher software manipulation to improve their quality beyond the originals.) No power cord--power drawn through the USB cable from the computer--and the lightweight portability of this scanner make it ideal for use with laptops. It can even be set up vertically if space is a problem. The only real drawback to the Canon LiDE 30 is that's it's a bit slow--20 seconds (approx.) for a 4" x 5" photo. Still, in this price range and for a 1200 x 2400 scanner, that's faster than most of the other models at this price. Like most included software packages, the software that comes with the LiDE 30 is adequate for most home uses--though no doubt some can benefit from other scanner software packages available in the aftermarket. If your scanning needs are modest-to-moderate, and your budget demands tight, this is definitely the scanner for you. The best, bar none, in terms of over all quality in this price range that's been offered to consumers up to now.

Best Bargain for Home!

Last year, after extensive research, I purchased an Epson Perfection 2400 (Photo scanner) for my brother and was dead set on buying one for myself. At that time, there was no other scanner that had its quality and features at a bargain price.

Well, I finally decided to buy a scanner and surprise, surprise...it's the Canon FIDE 30.

Here's four reasons why:

Quality of scan: I think the quality of scan should always be the primary factor in evaluating a scanner. This scanner produces scans equal to those of first-rate "professional" grade scanners like the Minolta Powerlook III (which I have at work). The scanner goes up to 1200 X 2400 dpi resolution and the results are stunning.

Price: $70 (about $120 less than the Epson Perfection)

Design: The small form-factor metallic body casing is durable and eye-catching. The small footprint is ideal for notebook users who like portability. Power is supplied through the USB connection so you have one less cord to worry about. The three buttons on the scanner for scan, copy, and email functions are a nice bonus (but not really needed).

Software: The Canon scan control software is simple and intuitive. The OCR text recognition is excellent.

Now for a scanner at this price, I shouldn't be nit-picking but I will anyways for those who need to find faults in a product:

1. The scan speed as other reviewers mentioned is relatively slow. So if you plan on scanning a large number of photos or documents in one sitting, it could get a little frustrating. But if you want quality WITH speed you really should be looking to a "professional" grade scanner (and get ready to spend some bucks). Even then, the speed difference would be seconds and not minutes.

2. The small footprint is great for portibility but for some people it may make the scanner seem flimsy because it is so thin and light.

3. XP users: DO NOT install the software on the cd that comes with the scanner. Go to the website and download the updated versions.

Well that about sums it up. To get a scanner like this for $70 is an outright steal.

Fuji NX-70 Printer

Even though the printer specs do not include Smart Media cardsabove 16MB, I had no problems reading a 32 MB card. You must have a TV plugged in in order to operate the unit. The prints turned out very well. I found that if I wanted to edit the prints (size and color) on my PC them place them back on my Smart Media card, I could improve the printing significantly. I find the media a bit expensive, but for a low cost printer that will be used for an occasional photo quality print, it is worth having it.

Just perfect with the Epson Perfection

PROS: I needed a cheap scanner that will let me scan old 35mm slides. At the same time, I didn't want to buy just a photo scanner which had no use after my personal project. I was very impressed with the quality and didn't need to use higher resolution then 1200 which is about 2Meg file size. I also had some old color positives and black and white negatives which I was able to convert into digital images. Great for multipurpose.

CONS: I scanned about 400+ 35mm slides and notice that the software is a little buggy.1. Sometimes after a scan when I would go to switch to the save/view window, the window would not popup and I had to scan again.2. After scanning multiple slides about 50 I went to save them and got a "not enough disc space error". I didn't have the option to make space, it just exited out and I lost all my work.3. Sometimes scanning a few slides it wouldn't properly align the borders. I had to rescan or scan one by one.

Excellent quality scans are finally affordable

I've been tremendously happy with the quality of the scans from the Perfection 2400. If all you need to do is make 640x480 scans for the www from prints you made at the local 1-hour, this is more scanner than you'll ever need.

However, scan resolution is sufficient to make brilliant 8x10 prints from 35mm negatives/slides. The included Epson software leaves a little to be desired -- it won't, for example, install on an alternative partition on your disk. Also, you will certainly have to use a photo manipulation application to tweak the levels and colour curves before you get your pictures right. But spend a little time to learn how your scanner works, and you'll have smashing pictures in a short time.

If you're adept at working image manipulation programs (Photoshop Elements 1.1 (not the new 2.0) is included with this product; but I have been happier with the freely available GIMP), you'll have professional scans at a fraction of what it used to cost not so long ago.

Great with 35mm Slides

I wanted to scan a large number of slides, specifically some slides for my mom for her for a christmas gift. I did extensive investigation into several scanners, including a scanner that was exclusively a slide and negative film scanner. I ended up choosing this Epson model and I have been extremely happy with it. It is very easy to use. On the manual setting, you can preview the slides and then alter their brightness and contrast before scanning them. I've set the image quality merely to 1200 dpi, and the images have come out with fantastic clarity and detail, and yet the bitmap file sizes are a reasonable 5MB (and for those folks who don't have great amounts of hard drive space available, compressed jpeg files are another option).

The scanner has done a fine job of scanning regular prints as well.

TV NUT

I bought this TV for my girlfriend at Circuit City for Christmas. I'm very impressed with it's crystal clear view. This TV goes great with the JVC HRXVC1U DVD/VCR Player. I was considering a combo tv/dvd/vcr but as I saw combo units on display, I see that the doors break off on the TVs, DVD players stop playing, etc. So if that happens you're out a TV if you have to send it back. I'd rather have a separate dvd/vcr unit than a built in one for that reason. If there is one thing I'd improve with this TV it'd have to be the remote control. In the dark it'd be cool to have the entire remote lite up. Other than that, this TV is perfect.

Great picture. Best in class. One thing to be aware of is that the TV puts out a kind of "burnt rubber" odor from back of TV when new. We had to take ours back and get another set. This is probably a short term thing as TV breaks in, but it was bad enough to replace set.

I normally don't write reviews but had to for this product! I love this ipaq, it is the best pocket pc in my opinion! It is easy to set-up even with windows vista operating system. It is easy to get the applications and sync them onto the pocket pc. I have been able to put music, videos, e-books, games,maps and more onto my pocket pc!! I have not been able to live without it since it came in the mail!! I will be buying another one if this one breaks but i don't see that happening any time soon. If you want a palmpilot of pocket pc this is the one to get. You will want to get a 2 gb sd card to go with it. for only a few bucks more, it will be worth it!!

Great stands!!!!

Great stands for the price. Very heavy duty, solid metal that has some weight to it. Assembly is easy, and comes with carpet spikes (work great), and little disks those spikes insert into if you have a non carpeted floor. Could go without the disks and probably be ok too. They provide 8 sticky pads to mount speakers with, but I went with some high grade sticky-tac. Those Boston satellite speakers ain't going anywhere. My uncoordinated goofball shepherd ran into them full speed and they didn't move. Only thing you may want to do is remove the cheesy 'VTI' plastic emblems on the bases, nothing s hair dryer can't flex off. Great purchase!!!

Light-weight, but durable enough. Love being able to put wires through the tube upto the top, saving the cluttered look you might have elsewise.

very poor product

I just purchased this stand from Amezon.com. This is very poorly make speaker stand. The base is very weak and made by plastic-like material, very light. And it is very over-priced compared with other similar speaker stands on the market. Not recommended at all!

This is the way to go...

I make a lot of bandsaw box's, so blade adjustment is pretty critical, especially with the smaller blades. This guide system is the way to go. The kit came with good instructions and only took twenty minutes to install. The added support that the guides give to the blade is worth every penny. I looked at the Carter set and the Jet set side by side and really couldn't tell the differance. So based on price I purchased the Jet guide set and am very pleased with it's performance. Adjustments are fast and easy to make even under the table. I bought another set to give to one of my friends as a birthday gift, and would reccomend them to anyone.Update...I read somewhere that these guides are not suited for small blades...I have to differ with that opinion. I use 3/16" blades a lot, and have no difficulty adjusting these guides to the blade. I like the way they support the blade, especially in tight radius cuts. It's true that with cool blocks you don't have to be very precise in your setup, as the cool blocks won't damage a blade if they come in contact with the teeth, but they also limit the "flex" a bit. Still feel these guides are the way to go. Highly recommend.

Perfect addition to the Jet Bandsaw

The Carter-style roller bearings were very simple to install and adjust. I was able to go through the entire process in about 45 minutes (and that included cleaning the sawdust from the parts of the saw I haven't seen in years). Changing adjustments for different blades is also a snap.The saw now cuts perfectly. The saw stays on the line and cuts exactly where I want it to. Jet ought to make this device standard equipment for their bandsaws.

Less frustrating than cool blocks

The roller guides are high on the list for anyone with a bandsaw using the graphite or other 'cool blocks'. I held off only so long as I could, and finally had my thrust bearing die on the original equipment. Why they have this bearing loaded from the side is beyond me. This is a terrible way to load a bearing, and I'd be surprised if all didn't prematurely wear out.The thrust bearing with the roller guides, on the other hand, is correctly loaded the way these little roller bearings should be, and I couldn't be happier with the better tracking of my blade.All that being said, not long after getting that set up...my belts bit the dust, one of them flew off. Don't wait to have this happen to you...could be nasty accident waiting to happen, as the blade could come off with you nearby. If your belts don't look 'nice', and don't feel pliable...replace them with urethane belts. Be sure to shop around, there are some places that sell 2 for price others sell for one.

Barbie Arts & Craft Studio

I am both an artist and a Barbie collector. This set really caught my attention! It includes so many adorable features including a working potters wheel. I keep all of my Barbie dolls and sets in their boxes, so this will not be played with. It is almost impossible to find this on ebay. The one time I did find it, the price it went for was many times more than the price it was selling for on amazon. This is one of my favorite Barbie sets!
