3Some Good Some Bad
By Richard D Auman
This is a good product with some flaws. The Good:Very portable and fast and easy to set up.It is stable (much more stable than it looks).Long adjustable supports.Flip stops are handy for repetitive cuts. The price - quite reasonable when you look at the competition (or even the previous version of this stand).

The Bad:The biggest problem is that the supports are just too small. Yes you can position the support 12' from the blade but there is no support in between. This is a problem when squaring the ends of 16' mdf moldings - they really sag. Cutting mdf moldings upright is even worse - a slight bend in this scenario results in the molding falling of the front or back of the support. The supports adjust easily to match the height of your saw. The problem? Plan on adjusting them constantly because they will not stay put. Also the beams that the supports sit on have some wiggle room to allow them to slide in and out. At full extension the beam can be move as much as 3/4" up or down

My review is somewhat negative because I wanted potential buyers see both sides - all the glowing reviews hide some flaws. However, I still really love this stand. You can not beat the portability of this stand. The problems I have found have been solved in some other stands but those things are just huge beasts. The portability is far more important to me. Also the stiffer your material the better. The stand really shines for rough carpentry - where small variances with the stops don't matter, the height of the supports can be off a bit, and the material is straight enough to not fall off the support or sag in between. I have often cut 4 x 12's for headers (as long as 14') and the stand held the up perfectly. Most of my grievances only arrise when using MDF moldings. The fact that I do so regularly is probably the biggest factor in my 3 star rating. In case you were wondering - I'm a contractor and I have used this stand almost every day for about 18 months.

5More than just a large saw horse.
By Samurai Dave
I've have cut my share of board feet while squating in front of my miter saw while it was on the floor. As I get older, this was going from being inconvenient, to a real pain in the back. (Literally!) There was no way to support the ends of the board other than shimming with scrap lumber prior to each cut. I tried mounting it on top of my B&D Workmate, but supporting the ends of the boards became even more of an issue. I knew I wanted a mitersaw stand, but which one?

I liked different features of the different stands I reviewed, like large wheels, heavy construction and additional work supports. Some looked like I could copy their design and weld from square tubular steel. Weight would be a consideration. Combine this with the weight of the saw, it could be over 160 pounds. Getting it into and out of my SUV without trashing my bumper (and my back) would be a trick. Using aluminum rectangular tubing would be lighter, but really pricey! After looking at the others, I decided on the Dewalt 723. I am glad I did! Most of the others come in kit form, the 723 is fully assembled. It folds into a compact package, is relatively light, very sturdy, made from high quality components, and it is one of the most professional looking stands around (especially when mounting a matching Dewalt miter saw on it!).

Most bolts have Allen-wrench heads. Any that are adjusted often (such as the extention arms and supports) have large T-handles. All nuts are the type that have nylon lock-washers to keep from vibrating loose. The saw brackets attach (and detach) quickly from the main beam. There are rubber feet attached to the brackets so the saw can be used alone on a bench (or on the floor...) if desired. The arms will support 99.5% of the lumber I will be chopping without sagging. When I want to throw an 8' 4x12 on the stand, it will require supports (2x2s will do) clamped to the arm, extending down to the ground. Other stands have these extra supports already attached, but are unneccessary for the vast majority of my cuts; and will only add to the weight and complexity of break-down for transport.

By folding down my rear seat of my SUV, I can get the stand to fit with ease. The saw is detached, and placed next to it. I will probably attach a pair of 10" phenumatic wheels to one end for easier protability around a job site. I like the table saw extention the Delta folks have on their stand (model 50-155), and will incorprorate a small extention similar to theirs on the DW723. There are some cheaper stands around, but they were either too heavy (up to 90 lbs for the stand alone!) or too flimsy (for mounting a DW708 12" compound sliding miter saw). The package arrived in fine shape with no damage to the stand.

I highly recommend this stand. Now that I have one, I wonder why I didn't get one sooner. I'll never go back to squating on the floor again.

4So You're A Serious DIY'er?
By A Customer
Let me say up front that if I owned a DeWalt miter saw, I'd give this stand a perfect 5.

As a previous reviewer brought up, the Makita saw is a bit deeper, and for some reason the rear mounting holes are inset from the front mounting holes. No problem if you are resourceful, and have a little angle iron on hand. Being able to adapt additional mounting rails to a variety of tools could make this an extremely versatile tool. Imagine unclipping your miter saw, and dropping on a tablesaw, bandsaw, or sander, with each swap taking less than 30 seconds!

After I fabricated a few mounting rail extensions for my Makita, the saw dropped onto the mounting rail like silk! There's a lot to like about this stand. It is immediately solid, and no hint of being tipsy even when the sawhead on the 12" saw is locked to the rear position.

I was concerned that the extensions would be too flimsy to support a long deck board, but after I leveled the extension to the table (more on this later) it was very solid, and sliding the 2x6x12 back & forth as when you are aligning a cut mark, there was very little deflection or bouncing.

After I initially mounted the saw, I found that the Makita table is higher than the supports will go. I plan to modify a set of my own design to match my saw. DeWalt may have balked at making a more universal base, but the fact is there are a LOT of different brands of saws out there and only a handful of quality tables available. Don't know about the big boys, but I've never turned up my nose at a potential revenue stream!

In the folded position, the stand is a little bulky, especially after hoisting 2x goods all day, but not too bad. From the time the stand comes off the truck to set up & ready to work, has been as fast as 2 minutes! I don't think the Trojan can be set up that fast, and that table is very tipsy with a 12" saw mounted to the rear of the table.

If you have a DeWalt saw, this stand is a no-brainer. If you have a different brand of saw, I'd advise taking the time to make a plywood base as instructed by DeWalt to mount your particular saw. This one is tough and ready to go to work right out of the box.

Happy Cutting!

5Heavy Duty Grinder for the Metal shop
By A Customer
I own two other 4 1/2 inch grinders besides this one. My Made in China $24 grinder that I was using with a cupped wire brush finally bit the dust. I went looking for Quality this time around and wanted to purchase Made in USA. But this Bosch won out, over a Dewalt, because it was the only one that was a "true" all ball / needle bearing construction. It has lots of power and the paddle switch saved my bacon when on a trial run using a metal cutting disk, the disk caught and shattered (I AWAYS wear safety glasses and gloves when grinding). On my other grinders with a thumb switch... that 1/2 second to find the switch & flip it off... would have been too long. Draw backs, the grinder seems to have more vibration and noise than my 8 year old, Made in Japan Ryobi, not to be confused with the new Ryobi, Made in China! Bill G.

5Tough and Versatile
By Al Howell
This is a fine quality tool, it works flawlessly. I originally bought this tool to cut ceramic tile (which worked great), but I found so many other uses for it such as grinding fiberglass on my brother's boat, cut out steel window frames, and to remove glue and wood residue on concrete before screwing in a subfloor. The grinder is small enough to fit in most tight places and light enough to hold over head for long periods of time. This is one of my most heavily used power tools and it's still going strong! I have to say Bosch makes the best tools that last forever.

5Pure power
By John
I purchased this Bosch grinder through Amazon.com to tuck point brick work. Received the tool in one week with free shipping. The paddle switch is a safe feature. When you release the paddle it stops. I found it to be very powerfull and it has absolutely no hesitation. Pure power!I installed a dry diamond blade for cutting brick - cut like butter with a hot knife. Installed a 4 1/2" diamond tuck point wheel and removed a mortar joint 35" wide in seconds. Highly recommend this tool if your looking for a good grinder. Well worth the money for the safety & power it delivers.

5Made in Germany
By Engineer
This grinder approaches the performance of much more expensive Metabo grinders at about half the cost. 11000 RPM. 9.0 Amps. Vibration absorbing handle. Spindle lock. The guard can be rotated without the use of tools. The paddle switch is a great safety feature. If your hand slips off the tool, the motor stops quickly. This is a powerful tool and definitely not your typical entry level grinder. I first stumbled across this tool at a Menards in the midwest. Had not previously considered getting a Bosch grinder, as only their very high end grinders ($$$) are made in Germany, and the entry level units at the box stores are all chinese made. Highly recommended. Made in Germany. To get better performance than this grinder, you have to spend $150 or more.

5Substantially larger than a 4-1/2" grinder
By Dr. C. Esch
Update: I've chewed through a few more discs now, and this is still a 5-star tool. I'm also taking back my previous concern about the angle of the handle. I have not had any issues whatsoever. This thing is a beast compared to the 4" and 4.5" grinders I have. It's still fairly new to me but seems extremely well made. My only critique is regarding the current trend of manufacturers to angle the handle forward. I'm not sure why you would want your knuckles closer to the disc.

5Upgrade your fixed based to a plunge router
By James R. Smith
I purchased the Bosch fixed based router last fall before the combo kit came out. I eventually mounted the fixed base to my home built router table. It is a bit of pain to remove the base from the table when I wanted to use it freehand. Since Bosch created a reat quick release for the router motor I decide to Purchased the plunge unit for portable use. The base also has fine depth adjustment (1/64") marks so you can actually adjust within 1/128th depth. The unit stops are easy to read and adjust. The motor slips in and out easily but can't fall out by accident. When you place the router into the base the bit is dead on center. No worry about bit cuts wandering if the base is running against a fence or pattern as you run your router. The plunge base works smoothly and the lock mechanism is easy to use.

If you have the Bosch EVS router then use your fixed base in your table and buy this to make your unit quickly portable again.

5BOSCH RA1166 Plunge Router Base (Purchased on 08/17/2010)
By Richard W. Mason
The base arrived promptly and went into use immediately. Works smoothly and fit with no issues. It is used for template sign making. Separately bought the Bosch adapter so I can use my PC bushings in the Bosch base. Should have bought this base years ago instead of limping along with my 30 year old Craftsman router.

3Good but motor can stick in casting
By Fishties
The plunge mechanism is great. The user can repeat the depth to the preset over and over. I have plowed mortise after mortise on production runs with excellent results. But that is what it is supposed to do. My one complaint is that the metal casting sometimes grips the motor housing too well, when the user wants to extract the motor and replace it in a stationary base. There is something about the metal that sticks. If you keep it well dry lubed or waxed this problem goes away.

4The 1617PK can be converted to EVS
By A Customer
I'm not sure why anyone would buy this 1617PK on Amazon when the variable speed version 1617EVSPK is available for a lower price. Variable speed is critical to control as the size of the router bit changes -- larger bits need to run at lower RPM. Anyways, I did buy this 1617PK because it was on mega-clearance at Lowes. After some schematic research, I found there are only 4 things different between the 1617PK and 1617EVSPK: the EVSPK has an added speed control, larger motor housing cover for the added speed control, and a different armature and field (the motor itself). I bought the speed control and cover for $30 through a local tool repair shop and now I have essentially the 1617EVSPK router for a steal of a price. It's not exactly the same because I didn't upgrade the armature and field...which would have drawn 1.0 more amps and provided about 1/4 more HP. So my point is that if you already have this single speed router, all is not lost and you can convert it to EVS if you really want, but if you haven't bought this, buy the EVSPK to begin with.

I own a Bosch 1613EVS plunge router and love it but wanted a dual base system too. Bosch routers are known for comfort and precision. They're kind of like the Toyota's of tools: well engineered tools that aren't the very best but consistently high performing and long lasting. The irritating things about this 1617PK/EVSPK router are the lack of a built-in dust control connection/system, non-centered base that requires the purchase of a centering cone or bit, and proprietary guide bushing system that requires an adapter to use the Porter-Cable standard guide bushings. Small things that I bought accessories to address but would've been better if they were part of the kit. Because of those things, I was convinced I would eventually get the Porter Cable 894VK combo kit until I heard how bad the plunge was on it. It's perfect on the Bosch, with Bosch being pretty much the only brand that covers its plunge posts to prevent dust from entering. The only other thing I don't like is that, unlike my 1613EVS plunge router, the 1617 doesn't have an on/off trigger on the plunge handle. But in the end, I'm a Bosch loyalist and because of the Lowes clearance, I now have two Bosch routers and am happy with both.

4Nice little unit
By Norm McDonald
Good power, pretty easy to change bits. I had a little trouble changing to the plunge set up. Very good visability. I wish the power swich was a little easier to get to while holding router, it seems that it took a little fumbeling to switch it off in a hurry when I needed to but over all I am very happy with the buy.

5Best router for anyone, great quality, good price.
By Phill
Bought this router after a week of research. Looked at porter cable, dewalt, and this bosch router. determined through reviews on this site as well as other reviews that the bosch was the router that I wanted after the first day, but decided to wait and read through some more reviews. Saw the Bosch 1617 router combo at Lowe's for 219, but it was not the 1617evspk, which comes with a free edge guide/ circle cutter and also lists as 2 hp, may be the same motor, but I want the newer, updated router . Looked on amazon and found this router, the Bosch 1617EVSPK which came with a edge guide/circle cutter and the router mat for $219.00. I agree with another buyer who said that this router does very professional work and can make anyone look like they know what they are doing. Even my wife who has never used a router was able to use this with ease. It is very easy to switch between bases, clean design. The included cast wrenches for changing bits are sign of a better quality routerand the edge guide/circle cutter is a must and a cinch to use. I like that it comes with functional carrying case that holds everything but the edge guide, even has places for most commonly used bits of both shank sizes. A major plus is depth adjustment that stays the same even after switching back and forth between bases; you don't have to readjust and hope its the same depth. The router has a feel of solid design, cuts soft and hard woods like butter, no vibration and is quite. Slow start is a must to prevent damage when kicking on. I read complaints of the switch location, but has not really bothered me and I don't know of a better place to put the switch where it would not create other problems. There is not really a better place to put the switch that would not interfere and either get dirty or turn the unit off/on accidentally. Flat top makes for easy bit changes and ensures that router does not turn itself on for those of us who do not unplug the unit (bad habit). The real wood handles make for a solid feel, instead of hollow plastic. The plunge base has an easy to reach lock that allows user to keep both hands on the router and minimize mistakes. A couple of thoughts on why I bought this router. When buying a router, could have bought 2 routers, 1 plunge and 1 fixed base, would have costed me the same for equal power, but not equal quality, and may need to buy separate accessories for both routers, like dust kit, edge guides, etc. I also figured I would spend at least $120 for a decent low end router, but would have to replace it after 4 years and would not have all the functions that I wanted. Rationalized that since getting the Edge guide for free, normally $40, took the price down; since most routers do not come with an edge guide or a circle cutter, especially one tool that does both. Figured that all the wood work that I would do, and plan to do, would only like to make the purchase once and have a nice router to boot, so I might as well buy it right the first time. I am not a hardcore woodworker, but routing is something that cannot be done by hand and the few times that I may use it you need the right equipment; it's value is immeasureable. There is nothing worse than having bad tools or tools that are a hassle to use. This router is something that I may keep till I get really old and pass off to my kids, and will still be a great tool then. Simply could not waste my time and patience with a lesser quality router. Bosch really put a lot of time into designing this router and its carefull placement of things, even the switch. Free shipping through amazon and no tax saved even more than buying from store, another plus. Have recommended this router to several friends and they have nothing but good things to say about it. If you are into woodworking, would also recommend the Bosch 1594 3-1/4-inch planer, another well designed tool that performs better than expected, only way to describe is that it literally glides over the wood surface and no sanding is needed afterwards, who could ask for more?Update: I have ran into 2 instances of the switch not working, probably due to dust on the contacts inside the switch. Not enough to change my rating though, since all it took was a little compressed air around the switch to get it working again. The second time I had to use Electric cleaning spray, found at your Pepboys, near the brake cleaner sprays. Hopefully in future designs they seal the switch off entirely. This router is still one of my most favorite tools.

2Beware - high tolerance operations a challenge for this router
By AmazonBuyer
I bought the 1617EVSPK 2-1/4HP bosch combo router some 9 months ago and have logged a lot of hours on the machine. Overall I echo the positive comments that other users have provided re: power, versatility, ease of use, etc. There are two areas where the unit falls down, however. First is the base plate; although it is allegedly centered at factory, if you are doing close tolerance work (eg using a leigh dovetail jig) you will probably need to buy a base center and reset the base plate. This is a pain but at least it is fixable. A far more serious problem is the fact that the router seems to have developed a side to side wobble when used in plunge mode, so that the bit swings a fraction from side to side when plunging, despite my carefully applying pressure equally on both handles. Not a problem for many applications, as the swing is very small, but when close tolerances are a must (eg routing mortises) it is hard to achieve. I cut several dozen floating tenon mortises this weekend using a new spiral upcut bit, and half the mortises were 1/32"-1/16" oversized, meaning I now have a lot more stock in my scrap bin. The unit does not appear to have any way to tighten up the plunge mechanism. This far more serious flaw makes it difficult to use for high end woodworking.

5You'll love this combo kit Bosch 1617EVSPK 2HP
By James R. Smith
If you were looking at getting a combo kit now is your chance to get a 2 HP unit instead of the 1.5 HP units. The softstart and self center bits work great both as a plunge router as well as a fixed base and the 2 HP soft start and mag body makes it easy to control as well as light weight.

The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don't skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments.

I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.

3Bowing side panels
By J. Pawlicki
After 6 months of average use, both side panels, where the Bench Dog Cab-Loc wheels are installed, are bowed in about 1/2 inch. The demo unit at the local Woodcraft store showed the same bow, but not as bad. The length of the casters on the inside of the cabinet is too great to support the weight of the cabinet. Woodcraft didn't seem interested and suggested I contact Bench Dog. I have not heard from them as to a fix for this problem or if they will warranty this product. If they don't respond, I will have to add braces under the cabinet for support. That's what you get when you buy particle board.

5Unbeatable Price and Performance
By Marc Ruby™
Given Bench Dog's reputation for quality router accessories, the price of this cabinet took me aback. It's extremely solid, and stands at a very convenient height for repetitious work (about 36 inches with a top and levelers). There are some very nice accessories (wheels, drawers, etc.) which make this one of the best router table cabinets (if not the best) on the market. With a bit of work one can fit many routertops to this base, but if you but top, fence, and table as a package the price is hard to beat, and overall quality is impressive. The door hinges are commercial cabinet hinges, for example. Much heavier grade than the usual hardware associated with particle board. If you want to work with the doors shut, and opening is provided for a air cleaner hose.If you've been wondering what to do about a permanent router table take a good look at this cabinet. I think you will find it extremely suitable.[Part I of 'How to Build a Really Expensive Router Table']
