5Even better than expected!
By Carl Haluss
I must have read every single review on every single website and in every single magazine, for every flat panel monitor made. Make sure you read all the specs on each monitor before you make a decision. The specs for the 1550m (mine is black)came out tops for brightness, contrast and response time, especially for a 15" monitor at this price. A lot of complaints I was hearing, were regarding the brightness, I actually have mine turned down. The clarity, both images and text, is excellent. Auto adjust set up right away, as advertised, and with the free download of "LiquidView" software, enabling one to set icons, text and other tools at a larger size and still keep the same resolution, the display is even more impressive. The small one-watt speakers produce a much clearer and sharper sound than one would expect from such small low-power units. The fact that I have a Soundblaster Audigy sound card installed obiously helps, but nonetheless these small speakers are impressive. The four USB ports in the base are very convenient (there is a USB cord supplied to hook the base of the monitor to a USB port on the processor), although USB 1.1, I have a printer, zip drive and wireless mouse connected and everything works great. My first PC was an NEC (also the monitor), and from the word go, it worked flawlessly for 5 years and is still going strong, so that also says a lot for NEC products, never had a problem with the hard drive or anything.I haven't been much of a gamer, but with the fast response time of 25ms. and the clarity of this screen, the graphics look gorgeous, with bright vivid colours. The resolution is 1024X768, so you do get the odd error message saying that the screen is not set at optimum, but I can live with that. I love this monitor, and with the narrow frame it actually appears to be a lot larger than 15", the display area seems larger than on the 17" CRT at work. It is very solidly built, and it also happens to be one of the best-looking monitors I have seen. I was tempted to go with one of the competitors, but compared to this 15" the other one looked massive with the much larger frame, it doesn't sound like a big deal but NEC is right, it does make a big difference. Even without the speakers and USB ports, I would spend the extra bucks, just for the added brightness and contrast, even over the 1550V model, just compare all the specs and you'll see why this small unit comes out on top. One review I read about the 1530V, the writer mentioned having an ATI video card, as I do, (Radeon 8500), and I do agree that it seems to work seamlessly with this unit. I am not that knowledgable technically, I can only say that the components I have in my system all work well together, whether the actual make of video card makes any difference in reality, I can't say. The one thing I do know for sure is that I love this monitor and have a hard time taking my eyes off it, my next upgrade in a few years would again be NEC, probably 18". Good Luck!

5Unless you require digital input, this is the BEST 15" panel
By V. Cheng
Unless you require digital input interface, which I would recommend Eizo Nanao's L365, NEC's 1550M is by far the best in terms of image quality for the price. Contrasts and brightness make this monitor stand out from the crowd. I found my Samsung panel at work lacks the brightness and contrasts that i demand, but this 1550M meets my highest expectation. The small premium over the others including NEC 1550V is worth every bit.

By the way, the 1550M's panel is identical to Nanao's L365, which explains why these two monitors manage to have such outstanding image quality. (Still a satisfed user even though my panel has one dead pixel)
