Product Description

The GPSMAP 176C is a 12 parallel channel, WAAS-capable GPS receiver with an extra-large, 16-color display that makes keeping your eye on the map easy. The display measures 3.75 inches diagonal and delivers a crisp picture thanks to a pixel count of 320 x 240.

On the inside, the GPSMAP 176C comes equipped with a built-in worldwide basemap and tide data for the United States. The unit is enhanced by GARMIN's BlueChart marine cartography, a miniature-size chip that inserts into the unit and provides additional offshore map detail or CD-ROM*. The cartography includes detailed depth contours, inter-tidal zones, spot soundings, wrecks, navaids, port plans, restricted areas, cable areas, anchorages and much more.

For use in a car, the GPSMAP 176C can accept downloadable information from GARMIN's MapSource MetroGuide U.S.A. CD-ROM*. A special mounting bracket is available that will allow the GPSMAP 176C to be temporarily mounted in a car.

* This unit requires data memory cards for storage of CD-ROM data.

5Excellent GPS for snowmobiling
By Geronimo
Although the 176C is not intended to be used in cold weather, and on a snowmobile, it does quite well. I have one rubber mounted behind the windshield, and have it wired to sled power. For really cold weather, I made a bonnet to go around the GPS, and wired in a heating element from a handgrip warmer to keep it from freezing. This does quite well until the temp drops to about -30 degrees farenheit. The display is very readable in direct sunlight. In lower light conditions, I just leave the backlight on high, and you can see it just fine. The marine mount that comes with the unit is plenty sturdy enough for use on the sled. There is nothing like being able to check your position without stopping (just don't do it while riding in a wooded area). When you do stop to take a break, the quick disconnect of the marine mount makes it easy to remove it. Also, you will want to use lithium batteries in cold weather, as alkalines do not work in the cold.
