Exo-Toa is cool

The Exo-Toa is very impressive. It takestime to construct it but, once done, it is a lotof fun. I was able to fitGali, Lewa and Kopaka in the Exo-Toa. For Onua,it was more difficult and for Pohatu it wasimpossible. One arm of the Exo-Toa has a clawand you can extend it (but, you must hold thearm, otherwise it goes back to its original position).The other arm is a canon that shoots (very nice!).I recommend this toy to everyone, but it is more funif you already have a Toa.

Exo-Toa - The Power Lies Beneath

Overall: Exo-Toa, the second Bionicle summer 2002 set. It's a terror to build (took my brother about 1 1/2 hours), but it is really fun to play with. Action: It's left arm consists of two hooks, which form a pretty cool claw. When you push a certain place, the claw-arm bashes forward. The right arm is a blaster-like mechanism, but when you pull a lever it shoots. (It has a rubber padded end so you don't jab out an eye.) The top of the Exo-Toa flips up to allow a Toa head to fit in, as long as you press the button on the front to flip down the front.

Give your Bionicles a new 'skin'

My children have just started to get into the Bionicle toys. Although Bionicles are really just action figures disguised as lego-style building projects, they have (much) more merit. I do have a comment on the education value of Lego's generally speaking. As one person notes, they don't teach you math. But, the kits DO teach children how to follow directions -- at least, my boys have learned that it can waste a significant amount of their time when they do not not look carefully at the guides. This is a valuable skill assuming that they ultimately have to figure out how to follow directions later on in their lives. (Like, say for high-school chemistry where adding ingredients in the proper order may prevent problems...)

Anyway, this has been a great addition to my boys burgeoning collection of Lego creations. It makes each of the Bionicles that they have that much larger -- and, consequently, more powerful in their battles with each other.

Blind Hemmer, How can you sew without it!

I have really enjoyed using my blind hemmer. It is very smooth, easy to operate. The learning curve is very minimal because it has one single function and that is to hem. You can hem a garment in no time flat. It is much better than the blind hem feature on most sewing machines.

I rate this machine very highly for what it is -- a light-use home blind hemming machine. It's not an industrial model meant to do miles of blind hems -- it's meant to be used hemming a few pairs of pants at a time. Given that, it works wonderfully.One "knock" against this machine is that it uses a straight needle rather than a curved needle. The people who stress this knock tend to be those who own a curved needle machine! I don't see this as a minus -- it means I can share needles with regular sewing machines instead of laying in a stock of curved ones. Since the needle's straight, the BH-600 forces a slight "hump" in the fabric's hemline when you lock the machine in place ready to hem. Some feel this is a disadvantage -- I haven't found this to be the case.If you'd like to see some pictures of this machine in action, I have a photo-diary at [...] By the way, this machine is identical to the Babylock BL-101 -- they're the same machine.

BH600 needs a better manual

I would agree that the Simplicity BH600 does not take a long time to learn to use, but a better manual would really help. The instructions for threading are good, but not for other operational details. There are 3 knobs which can be adjusted to accommodate different fabrics, stitch length, depth, and thread tension. The manual tells you that much. However, it doesn't tell you what those things mean nor what the numbers mean or when you should turn the knobs which way.Take stitch length, for instance. On my old Singer machine stitch length meant the number of stitches per inch, and measured the distance the feed dogs moved the fabric per stitch. Higher numbers meant smaller stitches. On my Janome, stitch length refers to the number of millimeters the fabric moves per stitch the needle makes. Smaller numbers mean smaller stitches. I have no clue what the "stitch length" means on the BH600 or what is measured. The total information given is "Variable stitch length to customize the stitch for every fabric weight." Not a clue concerning what is measured (interval between stitches? length of the stitch from the edge of the fabric?) or when you should turn the dial one way or the other.Nevertheless, its compact size is very important for those of us who only need a blindhemmer once every couple of weeks, it stores very neatly in the box it ships in, and it worked well right away on the lightweight cotton the machine was set up for. I'm just afraid that it will be a bear when I have to try to figure out those knobs by trial and error.One year later: I would take away some stars at this point. The tension system is not at all robust in this machine. Even though I do not use the machine heavily, with months going by without using it, the tension mechanisms are totally shot. It started giving trouble just before the warranty was done and I contacted a certified shop to see about getting the machine worked on. I was told that the spring is a little weak, just take it out and stretch it a little. I did and that worked for a while, but it is pretty worthless now. I supplement the spring with a washer my husband found that is the right size, but the plastic knob that holds the tensioner parts together is also cracking.I would also not buy another straight needle hemmer. The problem with the straight needle is that a bar lifts the fabric up just as the needle is about to pierce the fabric. This tends to pull light-weight fabrics out of alignment, making the hem a little crooked unless you really fight it. All in all, I would not buy this machine again nor recommend it. Pay a little more and get a machine that is more robust and will work better.

Simplicity SA200 Pioneer II

I purchased this for Christmas for my adult daughter who had previously never shown much interest in sewing, but had mentioned recently that she might liked to have a machine for home decorating projects, i.e. curtains, pillows or whatever. I was basically looking for something inexpensive and simple for the occasional craft project and mending and this one seemed to fit the bill (although I am sure it would be fine for more frequent use and more complicated projects as well!) I had looked at another machine that was $$$ less but rejected it immediatley when I realized it did not have a treadle to make it stop/go with your foot - it had a hand switch on the machine for that which did not appeal to me at all - sometimes you do need both hands to guide the fabric or whatever, plus reviews of that product pronounced it to be a hunk of junk! This one does have the foot-treadle, and I did set up the machine to try it out and it worked great and was just what I was looking for.

Good for beginners

I recently bought this so I could make some window treatments and things for around the house. I had not sewn since Home-Ec class in junior high. This machine is easy to use and works well. it even has a buttonhole function. Directions on how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin are fairly easy to understand although I did have to read them a couple of times since I was unfamiliar with sewing.

I am basically a beginning sewer and I purchased this machine about a month ago.The instructions are very clear, detailed, and easy to follow.I have used this machine for quite a few craft projects already and it seems to work fine.I think it is a great machine for the $$
