Product Description

The shape of the Sommelier Burgundy Grand Cru, developed in 1958, represented a quantum leap in terms of wine glass design ??? and has earned it a place in the permanent display of the New York Museum of Modern Art.This glass can take apart a lesser wine, mercilessly showing up its weaknesses. But a great wine ??? a top-class Burgundy, Barolo or Barbaresco ??? will be revealed in all its glory. The large bowl allows the bouquet to develop to the full, while the slightly flared top lip maximizes the fruit flavors by directing a precise flow onto the front palate. Certain wines and grape varieties require this type of controlled delivery. By ensuring that the fruit is highlighted while using the marked acidity of the wine to keep the flavors in balance, this is a glass that produces a superbly three-dimensional ???taste picture'. The simple yet beautiful glass is mouth-blown and made in Austria of lead crystal. For safe transporting, this individual stem arrives in its own shipping container with reinforced ends.Recommended for: Barbaresco, Barolo, Beaujolais Grand Cru, Blauburgunder, Burgundy (red), Dornfelder, Ech??zeaux, Gamay, Moulin ?? vent, Musigny, Nuits Saint Georges, Nebbiolo, Pommard, Pinot noir, Roman??e Saint Vivant, Santenay, Volnay, Vosne-Roman??e, Vougeot.

5terrific wine glass for the serious wine drinker
By A Customer
this is the top of the line when it comes to wine glasses. it's the perfect gift for someone who loves wine, especially complex red wines.

there is a smaller version (the mini) but i recommend this slightly larger version due to both its aesthetic appeal and its functionality. it is the way that good red wines were meant to be enjoyed.

5The Best Wine glass for the Best taste!
By Paul Malarik
Contrary to popular belief- we really "taste" with our noses and not with our tongues. Tasting involves the tongue to a very minor extent (taste buds only detect sweet, sour, bitter, and salty). All the other favors or sensations are detected by the nose--the only time most people notice this is when they have a bad cold and stuffy nose--then nothing "taste" good.

Therefore- you want a wine glass that can let the aroma linger, so you can get a good whiff.

In addition the thickness and curvature of the glass somehow alters your "taste" ... I'm not sure why ... but I think many people would agree that some drinks taste better out of the bottle under certain situations...like soda or beer on a hot day.

Therefore- you want a wine glass that is thin and has a curvature that you like. Unfortunately, a thin handsome wine glass is also easy to break. I have already broken a few...one an expensive Riedel Champagne glass.

In conclusion: This is my favorite wine glass for good red aromatic wines.

3Not the same as they used to be
By Faxanadu
I have 2 of these glasses that I had purchased about 3 years ago. They are amazing, nice big size, well crafted by hand and just wonderful. Believe the hype - they make enjoying good wine that much better.I decided to order another one to have as a back up as they are fragile. It arrived in the traditional Riedel packaging, but the glass is now smaller than my previous models and seems a bit off. It is noticeable when you compare to the exact same model I purchased before. The crystal also seems to off in quality, it does not have the same feel and sparkle as my previous models. It is still a nice glass - but at this price, I expect the high quality that I had obtained previously.

5Utility, versatility and reliability
By A Customer
Tamrac has always been the best in camera cases, and now they have outdone themselves with this backpack. I am a writer and photographer and I was always toting around several different bags for all my equipment. This backpack lets me pack my laptop, all my disks, loads of film, several lenses and a tripod both safely and comfortably. I tend to carry a lot of stuff and the Tamrac 759 Photo/Notebook Computer Backpack distributes the weight very well - I never get a backache. It also fits well in the overhead bins of airplanes. By far, it is the best carrying case solution I have ever used.

4Excellent photo/computer backpack; not so good for clothes.
By Federico Mena-Quintero
I have had this backpack for 11 years. From back to front:1. The laptop pocket is "hidden" between the shoulder straps and your back, and the zipper is concealed/protected by a wide rain flap. It doesn't look like a laptop bag. This laptop pocket is has thick padding at the bottom to protect your laptop from the floor, and from your back so you don't feel like you are carrying a brick. You can fit a laptop and a couple of paper notebooks easily. You only start feeling a bulge if you put in something very thick like a binder plus the laptop. I really like this laptop pocket.2. The main compartment for cameras is excellent *for cameras and lenses*. The perimeter is lined with velcro fuzz, and the backpack comes with padded dividers which have velcro hooks on the ends. There are two long dividers to create a center compartment for a camera with a long lens, and a few short dividers to create smaller sections for lenses / chargers / etc. These work great for cameras and lenses, and not so great to create a configuration for a camera, a couple of short lenses, and *books*. Narrow books always seem to slip between the padded dividers and the back of the compartment. You can fit a few clothes, but the shape of the dividers makes this a bit awkward. The front flap of the main compartment has two "window pane" zippered pockets, which I really like. You can put money / keys / memory cards / first-aid kit / whatever in here.3. The secondary compartment is for small notebooks, pens, keys, business cards, etc. Its front flap also has two "window pane" zippered pockets.4. Finally, there is the zippered pocket at the very front of the backpack. Useful for small stuff for which you need quick access. The shoulder straps: They are nicely padded and easy to adjust. There is a chest buckle, but the male part of the buckle managed to slide itself loose from its strap, and I lost it years ago. I really wish it had staid put; when the backpack is heavily loaded, I would really appreciate the chest buckle. Fortunately, the remaining strap is long enough that you can actually tie it closed. The belt straps: Nice, wide, seatbelt-like. Not so easy to adjust, but you only do it once. I wish they could be neatly stowed when not in use. However, I manage to wrap the straps around the "Modular Accessory System" slots on the sides of the backpack.Features I love: The handle on the top is delicious. The thick metal loops on either end of the handle make it easy to hang water bottles and stuff. The smaller metal loops on the shoulder straps are useful for the same. The "Modular Accessory System" slots are loose enough that you can slide one leg of a tripod through them and carry the tripod around. The "window pane" zippered pockets are very convenient and secure.Every zipper except for the one on the utility pocket in the very front has a wide rain flap that basically conceals the zipper. They really work! The zippers are super-sturdy. Nice and beefy. Both the main and the secondary compartments open up completely - the zippers go all the way to the bottom of the backpack. You can then put the backpack on a table or on the floor and pack/unpack it easily.Sometimes I feel that the main camera compartment could be a bit shallower, and the compartment for notebooks/pencils a bit deeper - or the main compartment shallower, and an extra compartment for a few clothes.I would buy this backpack again. It is extremely rugged. Over the years a few people have complimented me on the backpack, which always feels nice :) The times that I have *really* crammed it with stuff, it has worked flawlessly and alwaysSummary: *great* for camera gear, laptop, and a couple of notebooks/books. Not so great for clothes - a light sweater is fine, but fitting a day's change of clothes will be awkward.

Riedel Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru, Single Stem Product Description:

  • Glass design enhances taste of red wines such as Red Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
  • Handmade, mouth-blown full lead crystal
  • Large bowl allows wine to breathe, emphasizes depth in contemporary wines
  • Weighs 14 ounces; holds 30-3/8 ounces
  • 10-5/8 inches tall; 4 inches wide

Product Description

This glass, first created in 1959, is not a design gimmick but a precision instrument, developed to highlight the unique characteristics of the great wines of Bordeaux. The large bowl (capacity 30 oz) brings out the full depth of contemporary wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.Modern vinification techniques enable wine-makers to concentrate the fruit to such an extent that young wines may seem one-dimensional, tannic and over-oaked if served in smaller glasses. The Sommeliers Bordeaux Grand Cru gives breathing space to both young and more mature wines, unpacking the various layers of bouquet and delivering a full spectrum of aromas. On the palate, the texture of the wine ??? soft, silky, velvety ??? is intensified and the finish prolonged, gently blending acidity with supple, sweet tannins. This is a glass that showcases these majestically structured red wines in all their complexity and finesse. The simple yet beautiful glass is mouth-blown and made in Austria and executed in over 24% lead crystal. For safe transporting, this individual stem arrives in its own shipping container with reinforced ends.Recommended for: Bordeaux (red), Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Domina, Fronsac, Graves rouge, Listrac, Merlot, M??doc, Margaux, Moulis, Pauillac, Pomerol, St. Emilion, St. Est??phe, St. Julien, Sangiovese, Sangiovese-Grosso.

5Wonderful, but depends on how much you like wine.
By A Customer
I own a modest set (8 different stems) of Sommelier glasses for my own tasting purposes, and believe that they are worth every penny to me, personally. The quality of the Sommelier stems cannot be emphasized enough - even over the Vinum series.

They are, in every way, extremely delicate. Very thin walls, thin stems, and beautiful craftsmanship. As long as you are careful with them, they will bring your fine wines into a completely new light. They will allow you to intimately taste the wine in perfect balance.

But if you are not a serious wine drinker, stick with the Vinum series. The Vinum series is more than enough. I go to weekly wine tastings at my local wine shop where they serve the wine in cheap ($1 ... maybe) glasses that actually mask the wine's flavors and bring out the harsh qualities while supressing any smells or tastes that would actually allow you to evaluate the wine properly. I started to bring a basic Vinum glass, and the difference was unbelievable. When at home comparing the Vinum and Sommelier series, however, the difference is much less pronounced. If you use a glass that doesn't kill the wine's flavor, that's enough. The added pleasure of the Sommelier series lies mostly in its lighter, more delicate construction. Honestly, I'm not sure how much of it is purely psychological, but it just FEELS good to hold your wine in a delicate work of art.

I say mostly, because these glasses are BIG. Some of my friends have threatened to turn my glasses into fish bowls. This added size pulls apart the wine, letting you move your nose around in and above the glass to discover everything that the Vinum series might compress into a smaller space.

Overall, buying a few Sommelier stems would do your finer wines a favor, but for everyday drinking, or for those who aren't complete yuppies like myself, the Vinum Series is just fine.

5Great for medium-big reds!
By Ashley
Riedel crystal wine glasses are some of the best you can buy. They are specially designed for drinking wine... Riedel makes many different shapes of crystal glasses for different wine vareitals. If you only buy one type of high-end glass for your red wine, however, this one is a great choice. As part of the Sommelier line, it is oversized, so it really opens up the wine for a fuller nose and body. Not meant for whites, or weak, light wines - use a smaller, tighter glass for that. I use this glass for bordeaux, of course... cabernet, merlot, barolo and occasionally also for pinot noir, sangiovese, a big chianti, or super tuscan. The taste of the wine in this glass is distinctly different compared to other glasses (crystal and glass) that we own and have used.I had ordered this glass to replace one that had broken. Though these glasses are incredibly well made and not 'thin' and 'delicate' as some can be, they are still fragile and should be handled and washed with utmost care, especially given the price you are paying for them! My husband chose to handwash it after imbibing a bit too much, and he broke the stem right off. I do not believe that this problem is one of quality at all, but instead consider this a warning for your handling and care for the glass. At the time I ordered, the price I found on Amazon was the lowest in comparison to find compared to other discounted prices offered. These glasses are expensive, but worth it.I was especially impressed by the shipping. In past experience with private distributors, I have had Riedel glasses break in shipping due to poor padding / packaging. When I received my glasses in this case, they were very well protected and arrived intact.

5Very Special Glassware
By Great Faulkner's Ghost
If you can afford to splurge on a Riedel Sommelier series glass you will never regret it. You simply can't believe how much difference a great glass can make, even on "everyday" wines. IMHO, the Zinfandel Sommelier glass is a good all around shape for the price; the Bordeaux and Burgundy ballon are bigger and therefore better because they have more internal surface area, but they cost more and there super-size makes them somewhat impractical.Because the crystal is delicate and thin, these clearly are not for the dishwasher and must be handwashed. Be aware also that the Sommelier stems separate from the bowl rather easily if you twist the stem while drying the glass with a towel, which is quite a natural movement. But aside from that issue, which applies to many brands of hand blown crystal these are very special in every way.
